Ridiculous import taxes of 43%

I purchased some climbing boots which were delivered promptly but hit with a huge import fee.

On their site it says 20% VAT + shipping tax of £20, which I thought was fair. But when they arrived, the courier (UPS) said there was an import fee of £111.40. This was 43.5% of the cost of my item, so I refused delivery and told them to return to sender.
UPS took nearly 2 months to return the boots and when they eventually arrived back at Alpinstore, they refunded me £131.63 of the £257.82.

When I questioned where the rest of my refund was, I was told that was all I was due because of the import tax.

I then got back in touch saying they were never delivered and so no import tax should be charged and that I would like a breakdown of the returned items cost in order to complain to HMRC Customs and Excise.

Miraculously I received an email the day later saying my import tax of £111.40 that was deducted from the original refund was returned to me.

This makes me think that if I was not to pursue this, they would have just kept the import tax fee which was fabricated.

Overall, speedy delivery, very hard to make contact with until you get an email from them and import taxes not as described on their website.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed experience. We are sincerely sorry for the difficulties you encountered.

Regarding import fees, as stated in our general terms and conditions of sale:

"Export to the UK: As of January 1, 2021, VAT is applied to your orders as follows:

- Orders under £135: Local VAT is paid directly at the time of ordering on our website. Only administrative fees (£5 for DPD & £11 for DHL) may be charged.

- Orders over £135: Local VAT must be paid upon delivery to the local carrier + administrative fees (£5 for DPD & £20 for UPS)."

Furthermore, "In the event of refusal of the package due to non-payment of customs fees and local VAT, Alpinstore will only refund the cost of products returned by the carrier after deduction of customs fees charged to Alpinstore for the return of goods after customs clearance. Alpinstore can, upon request, send the invoice for the returned goods justifying the charges incurred."

We understand that the situation may have been confusing.

Thank you for your understanding,
Sincerely,
Bertrand

We also ordered with a feeling of risk

We also ordered with a feeling of risk, having read all the bad reviews, but actually, everything was fine. The product was as expected and delivery was quite fast for the fact that it comes from France. But still, the refund policy is tricky; I would be worried if the shoes didn't fit. But luckily they did:)

BEWARE if buying from the UK - there possibly will be tax to pay

Time and again there are complaints from UK customers about the vendor not giving enough information about tax duties when buying from them. The vendor DOES NOT CARE about how much tax you have to pay. Other sites/vendors do it much better, make it much clearer, but Alpinstore does not.

Communication is absolutely terrible, you will get a reply quicker if you post here than if you email them/him (it feels like a one person company).

My camping holiday was completely ruined by them taking 8 days to find the tent in their warehouse! Then me refusing to accept the order when it came as there was a huge amount of duty to pay on it (I took the advice of the driver who said I should refuse it and I would then get my money back - how wrong he was). Alpinstore took around £138 off me which they refuse to give back.

The worst thing is, is that this has happened to countless customers and the vendor does NOTHING about it, almost like they/he does not care about you and your future custom.

EDIT: I have finally been paid back the rest of my refund. I hope now the company will learn from this and put something in place to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

This information is detailed in our General Terms and Conditions of Sale, and normally, when placing your order, a message in red in the shopping cart indicates that fees may apply depending on the country.

"As of January 1, 2021, VAT and administrative fees apply as follows:

- Orders under £135: Local VAT is paid directly when ordering on our website. Only administrative fees may be charged (£5 for DPD and £11 for DHL).

Orders over £135: Local VAT must be paid upon delivery to the carrier, along with additional administrative fees (£5 for DPD and £20 for UPS)."

We understand that this may seem restrictive and do our best to ensure this information is clear before order confirmation.

Beware the tariff charge

Nowhere in the purchasing experience does Alpinstore explain that the (US) buyer is responsible for paying tariffs prior to delivery. The overall price - initially less than competitors - became significantly more.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

The following information is detailed in our General Terms and Conditions of Sale, and a red message in your shopping cart during checkout should indicate that fees may apply depending on the country.

"Since August 29, 2025, the exemption from duties and taxes for shipments to the United States under $800 has been suspended. A 15% customs fee is therefore automatically applied, in addition to a $20 customs clearance fee charged by the carrier."

We understand that this situation has been frustrating and we regret the inconvenience caused during the delivery of your package.

I wanted to order the same model I had fir the last 11 years. I found out that this model no more exists on the market but at Allonstore. I am happy I got a rare model which was otherwise difficult to find.

Absolute thieving Bastards!

Absolute thieving Bastards!
If you live in UK, do not buy from these scammers.
They advertise at low prices, provide an invoice for that amount when making payment, but deliberately fail to highlight that the goods will be subjected to further import duties and VAT payable to UPS when delivered. In my case £70 extra on top of the £150 paid for the goods. I refused the goods and immediately informed them. It took 2 months of constant fighting to get a refund and then they refunded just £60. ABSOLUTE SCAMMING BASTARDS.

Tariff and return issues

When ordering my product on their website, I was not alerted to the fact that there could be a significant tariff to pay upon package arrival. It has been somewhat difficult to communicate with the company during the return of this product.

I had a very disappointing experience…

I had a very disappointing experience with Alpinstore.

I placed an order on February 22 for an item that was clearly marked as “in stock” on the website. However, the order was only processed several days later, and shortly after that I was informed about delays due to “supplier issues.”

Over the following weeks, I repeatedly contacted customer support and was told to wait again and again. After almost a month, I was finally informed that the item was actually out of stock and my order could not be fulfilled.

I requested a refund immediately and was told it would be processed within 2–3 business days. This did not happen. Only after opening a dispute via PayPal did the situation suddenly resolve, and the refund was issued instantly.

This raises serious concerns about their stock management and customer service. Selling items that are not actually available and delaying refunds is not acceptable.

I cannot recommend this store.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are sincerely sorry for the situation you encountered. We fully understand your disappointment regarding the delays and the unavailability of the ordered product.

Despite our best efforts, stock discrepancies can sometimes occur. In your case, we regret that the item was initially listed as available when a supply issue subsequently prevented shipment, and that it took too long for you to be informed of this.

We sincerely regret that we were unable to meet your expectations and hope to have the opportunity to offer you a better experience in the future.

Sincerely,
Bertrand
