Thanks very much for this review. we do try to offer as many resources as we can for the amount paid by our students. We will take your suggestion on board but if it will result in increased costs then we may not be able to introduce them as not all learners can afford a higher price, and we want to keep our course as accessible as possible. Of course, like most learning organisations we also encourage learners to complete their own research to supplement what we provide, so there is nothing to stop you and others finding additional videos and practice examples and even sharing some of those with your classmates if you would find it useful.

You did indeed waste your money but as a company that has helped hundreds of learners achieve their goals this is definitely not a scam.

The reasons you failed were completely yours, as I will explain:

The Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting, if successful, allows Interpreters to work with a wide range of public services, including hospitals, benefits, housing, social services and local government. In these situations (often working with vulnerable people) poor interpreting can literally risk a persons income, living conditions and health so we do need to make sure that interpreters who pass with us are genuinely competent at the role. For yourself, you did not prove this (in fact your exam was one of the worst we have seen) so we cannot just hand out a certificate to you. On the basis of your exam, you would be a serious risk to those you interpret for so there is no way you should be interpreting for others.

Due to the risks mentioned above, this qualification is not something that should be underestimated, however, you clearly underestimated it and thought you could pass without putting any effort in. We can see from your student records that you did not attend all the classes (your scheduled classes haven't even finished yet), have not accessed the online resources and have not put any work in to studying at all. You only joined the class on 3rd March and sat the exam within a few weeks which is sometimes fine for experienced interpreters but not for those just starting out. You can see in all of our documentation that we recommend studying a minimum of 60-80 hours before taking this exam because you do need to know what you are doing and even experienced interpreters need to regularly work on their vocabulary. You also tried to reschedule your exam because you hadn't prepared and only went ahead as the request to reschedule was the day before the exam and would you would have incurred an admin fee had you rescheduled. We did warn you of the risk of attempting the exam without preparing at the time but you insisted you had the skills and knowledge to be successful.

In terms of the exam itself, as stated, yours was one of the worst performances we have seen. It was full of errors that in a real life situation would have risked the health, if not the life, of the person you interpreted for. You showed a complete lack of understanding about the interpreter role, an demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge of the specialist terminology and vocabulary (as stated on your feedback - you could not find equivalents for “Depression and anxiety”, “wreck”, “appreciated”, “judge”,” comfortable”,” over analysing”, “help”, “” observation”, “plan of action”,” dominate”), interpreted “depression and anxiety” as “problem to mind” (which is meaningless). You translated “weekend”, as “Saturday”, “I will try to cut down on drinking”, as “ She wants to leave her partner”(completely incorrect and suggests you just guessed what was being said),” and many more. If this was genuinely a depressed person looking for help they certainly wouldn't have had any comfort from this session and could have easily gone home and hurt themselves. This is unacceptable for a highly vulnerable patient.

At LearnQual we do not simply give certificates away to people who enrol, and pride ourselves on our high standards and the high quality of students who achieve a pass.

So yes, if you do not take the exam or the role seriously, if you rush the content, if you do not complete the course, if you do not prepare for your exam and if you do not put any preparation work in then you will end up wasting your money. However, you are the only one that can be blamed for wasting it as we have a very good pass rate for students who can be bothered to put the effort in.

If you are actually serious about becoming an interpreter, you can still access all the course materials and go through them properly, then go for a resit which will allow you to get some value for what you have paid.

Thanks for this review. I appreciate what you are saying and we would love it if we could run training groups that were language specific.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to guarantee the other students on your class speak the same language as you because we cannot control who signs up and when. If we wanted to run language specific classes, we would have to cut the number of classes that we provide to one or two per year per language which is often less convenient for students, and / or increase the costs significantly as our classes would have less students which is often not desirable either.

You do have a couple of options if you wish to practice and do not have friends or family to practice with, however:
- You can join our Facebook group where you can connect to other students who may not be in the same class. Often many students in multiple languages are looking for practice partners there (https://www.facebook.com/LearnQual-341668140405417/?view_public_for=341668140405417).

- You could also book hour long private 121 sessions with our tutors that allow you to practice with someone in your language. These sessions are very reasonably priced and can be booked via our website here: https://learnqual.com/product/one-to-one-interpreting-tutoring-1-hour/

Many of our students find these two options tremendously helpful when it comes to practicing.
