After many emails, from 4 different customer service members, I was told that I am unable to open a sole trader account.
After questioning multiple times why, I was sent the same answer over and over;
"Sole trader accounts are subject to eligibility checks, which include looking at credit data and understanding the nature of your business."
They will not elaborate any further on the subject, saying that this their policy on the matter.
The information they use is what you enter when opening a personal account. I've had no problems with Loans, mortgages or other things in the past, and my credit score is fine.
So the information used must be to do with my profession.
If I am wrong, and Starling bank is not prejudice against film industry professionals, then surely they can give an actual explanation as to why I am not allowed a sole trader account.
Transferred my limited company account from a fee paying bank to Starlings FREE account. Very quick transfer, all direct debits transferred across. Very impressed. 5 stars.
Great platform for banking and really easy to use. However, just hope that you never need to contact them. Wait ages on their online chat and they just leave, email them and they don’t answer. If the service matched the platform this would be a great bank, may have to try another.
Terrible customer service. I never got an answer and my partner tried to open a sole trader account for his business. It wasn't possible but no reason given by customer service, they just copy paste the replies. No one you can speak to. I work in customer service and this is just ridiculous. We will both switch bank. Can't recommend - probably good if you don't need help/have a question or someone to talk to.
not wowed by the customer experience. I have tried to call the helpline which was too busy to answer and they told me so and hung up on me. so it's not 24/7 manned by humans, it is only humans when they're not busy, otherwise it's the chat, which is basic. :-|

Simple and easy banking. Wasn't sure when I first read up about Starling as it seemed too good to be true. I now use then for personal and business banking. Makes life very easy!

So gutted. I was recommended starling for how great it is to sole traders. I loved it when I got a personal account & recommend it after my research to entrepreneurial friends. They now all have sole trader accounts. And I don’t. Spoke to someone and they didn’t have an answer to why. No explanation. No option to open sole trader. App seems good. But to be honest hardly using it cause, well I got it to be a sole trader with them. Going to need to start looking elsewhere unless someone can advice me on how to move forward. Not ideal customer service.
Awful bank. Quite possibly the worst experience I have had banking wise. Terrible customer service and attitude. Will take my business elsewhere to a bank that appreciates its customers. Most definitely and 100% do NOT recommend. Take my advice and go to a proper bank.
I've started a new business and turned to Starling for a business account, as I'm a personal account holder. While the application process was slick on my mobile, the service I received was disappointing. I was asked the same info three times and it took 8 days to get a decision with no intervening communication. I understand Covid is disrupting service currently, but even so this process took too long and caused too much worry.
I've now added the business account to my personal account which I wouldn't have done had I not been thoroughly impressed (& Virgin Money obviously aren't very good at all)
Great bank, would highly recommend.
I found that opening an account a really smooth and easy customer journey. No complicated questions just easy peezy !! Love the app too very easy to use - really pleased I have joined ‘the club’ !!
First time I’ve had a business account and starling bank has made it so easy! Book keeping, VAT, general banking is so easy I’m considering changing all my other accounts over to them!
Love it. Easy to use and great innovations with the consumer in mind!
