I got some Sugru to fix up my charging…bad experience

I got some Sugru to fix up my charging cables and Make a stand and mount for my iPad. I opened the packets and tried to mold them but it kinda just crumbled and didn’t stick to itself or surfaces of other objects. All packets were like this. I didn’t know it had a shelf life. I bought it and used it within a few days. Store won’t refund because it’s a opened product. Waste of money and super disappointed.

Hi there Tyler,

I'm very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience with Sugru. It sounds as though you were sold expired or close to expired Sugru.

Sugru will expire by the date displayed on the back of the single-use packs when stored at room temperature (21°C/70°F).

Once Sugru is past the expiry date there's nothing that can be done to return it's original properties (pliability/adhesiveness etc).

I understand it must have been frustrating that you didn't get the chance to use your Sugru - could you please drop us an email to hello@sugru.com? This way we can get some replacement Sugru out to you so you can try your fix again.

We'll look forward to hearing from you,

Great product

Great product, easy to use. Have fixed shoes, bike, garden accessories, fridge, cables for tablets, no nail fix in bathroom... and some more. It does not work on some surfaces, however rather few.

still like putty 24 hours later

still like putty 24 hours later. Does not do anything! the Sugru was still in date, purchased via amazon, sold direct by "sugru" and listed as "Amazon's Choice".

It was indoors, dry clean environment sticking plastic to a painted surface. After 24 hours drying / curing time, it's still like putty and nothing has changed.

Don't belive the internet hype, i feel well and truly scammed. Lesson learned!

Hi there Mi,

I'm very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience with Sugru.

Sugru cures 3mm deep (the Original Formula) or 2mm deep (the Family-safe | Skin-friendly Formula) every 24 hours at room temperature (21°C/70°F) and will take longerif the layer is thicker, the temperature that are below this point, or if the fix has a limited access to air.

Dried up and fell off

After seeing all the uses for Sugru and the infinite possibilities I broke down and ordered a "eight single use pack in multi colors" First thing I did was use it on my charging cords for my tablet and phones then applied some to the back of my son's tablets to both provide frip and to ID who'd was who'd. Both cases failed the cords dried up and slid off after about a week and the peices applied to my son's tablets fell off about a week after that. The bits still floating around are dried up and crumbly. This product had so much potential and turned out to be a major let down. Sad really as I'd it worked as stated it would be so worth it.

Not impressed

Below was my first use of Sugru. They have given me feed back on what to do and an offer of a replacement for me to try. What Helpfull people and I will follow their instructions. I wish all companies were as Helpfull.

After all the good reviews on the internet I thought I would give Sugru a go.I had to stick a small penny size magnet to a window. Cleaned the area with alcohol and left to dry. I followed the instructions and was going to leave it for 24 hours but after about 12 hours the magnet and glue had fallen of under its own weight (2g). I will give it another change until the packets have gone but NOT impressed yet.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have a good experience with your Sugru, I realise this must have been disappointing, especially as this is the first time you've used it.

When mounting something directly to a surface with Sugru, we recommend using something to give it some support while it's curing. We find that masking/painter's tape works well for this, and you can see an example in Step 3 of this project guide here - (https://sugru.com/home-diy/how-to-make-a-child-friendly-wardrobe).

Sugru cures 3mm deep (the Original Formula) or 2mm deep (the Family-safe | Skin-friendly Formula) every 24 hours at room temperature (21°C/70°F) and will take longer if the layer is thicker, or if the temperature is colder. I imagine that if you were affixing your Sugru to an outside window that the temperature was likely lower, meaning it would have taken a bit longer to fully set.

We'd be happy to replace the Sugru that went to waste on this project so you can try again, would you mind dropping us an email to hello@sugru.com referencing your review? We can then get this sorted for you - thanks!

I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.

Although it's technically possible to reseal a single-use pack, it's tricky, as the moisture in the air starts curing Sugru as soon as you cut open the foil. We do recommend lining up a few projects instead, to make the most of the Sugru all in one go. All the Sugru in the world currently comes in the form of 5 g single-use packs, I'm sorry to hear that this was unsatisfactory for you. We'll make sure to pass on your feedback regarding producing larger packs in the future.

In regards to our price, our vision is for Sugru to become a household brand, and with increasing volume will come decreasing prices. We’re looking forward to this day as much as anyone, because our mission is to help as many people to get fixing again as we can. We are working hard on our costs, by investing in manufacturing technology and optimising our supply chain, and we look forward to passing on these savings as soon as we can.

For the future, if you like keeping things for a rainy day, you can store your Sugru in the fridge (or freezer), and this will multiply the number of months left to use it for up to 3 times!

Be aware of expiration date!

I agree with other reviewers, having purchased a package of eight unaware that there would be a use by date. When I was ready to use it, the Sugru had just expired. I went ahead and tried one package but it was pretty dry and almost crumbly.

Learn from my mistake-don’t buy to keep around for future repairs and be aware that there is an expiration date that must be adhered to.

Dear Sir

Dear Sir,

Saxophone key risers:

1) Can we add a fresh second or a third layer to Sugru first layer when already cured ?(fine tuning for up levelling palm keys of saxophone).
2) Can we sand paper and or polish the surface?
3) How to remove Sugru safely without damaging my saxophone keys

Thank you,

1) You can certainly add fresh Sugru onto already cured Sugru. Here’s a handy video about the ‘smearing technique’ that should help with this, (https://sugru.com/getting-started/how-to-apply-sugru-to-rough-porous-materials).
2) Sugru can generally be sanded, and you can polish the surface although this wouldn't make Sugru shiny. To give Sugru a smooth finish, simply rub it with soapy water before it has cured.
3) In order to remove Sugru, simply cut off the bulk of it using a knife or scalpel. You can then remove the residue with your nails and some tissue. If using Sugru on porous surfaces such as walls, unglazed ceramic surfaces or unvarnished wood, it is still removable, but may leave a stain. Greater transparency with differences and limitations of 'Family-Friendly' formula

24/07/2019 UPDATE

Thanks for your comprehensive reply. It was particularly good to read about your projected pricing evolution.

I do want to pick up on a couple of points in your reply:

POINT #1

You wrote that you were surprised to learn that the Family Formula didn't work out as well as I had expected. Relatedly, you wrote that it's safe for prolonged contact with skin.

Seeing as with the Original Formula I needed only 5-10 minutes for it to sufficiently set in my ear *without the thinnest part losing shape* when I removed it, and seeing that the Family Friendly formula sets slower and is seemingly wetter and stickier while curing, how long would you recommend keeping the Family Friendly Sugru INSIDE MY EAR in order for it to set to a sufficient level, so that it is not deformed while I remove it?

After providing your estimate, I'd also be curious to know if YOU would be comfortable keeping a wet, sticky product INSIDE your ear for any amount of time? I ask that sincerely and genuinely. If you have full confidence that Sugru is safe even INSIDE the human body (e.g. custom earbuds, custom mouthguards, custom snoring plugs) then it is a product even more revolutionary than I had originally imagined. The examples you gave re: prolonged contact with skin all related to external exposure: wristband, headphones, eyeglasses, inside shoes). And if it is safe for internal skin contact, then may I humbly suggest you market that too.

POINT #2

After reading your reply, I checked, and indeed, the differential in curing times is mentioned in the FAQ. Yet to reiterate, having been a longtime Sugru user, I had no reason to wander around the website, let alone in the footer, and let alone in the bottom part of the footer, to consult with the FAQ section, Vto see if there may be a difference in curing times. It's something that I would have benefited from knowing directly in the product description while shopping online.

Neither in the ABOUT section or even the MORE INFO section of the Family-Friendly formula packs in the online shop, is there any indication I can see regarding prolonged curing time, nor is there any specification that it bonds less strong than the original formula. Those are the two pieces of information that were directly relevant to me -- in my earbud project the Sugru sets inside my ear. I wasn't willing to leave it there indefinitely to set fully, and by definition, removing it from a curvy ear canal necessitates some pressure to deform the Sugru in the process. It's just with the original formula, the deformation is neither as severe or as irreversible as it is with the Family-Friendly formula.

Again, assuming this online marketing material was an innocent oversight, then I am hoping that this level of specificity I am providing can be of assistance moving forward.

The fact that Sugru is this responsive, interactive, and transparent with customers here on TrustPilot is admirable.

=====================

Summary: "I think Sugru could be more proactive and transparent in explaining how the Family-Safe formula is not as well-suited for certain applications of the product. I would never have opted for the Family-Safe formula had I known. "

---------------

I've been using Sugru for a few years now. While I've used it with success on my sunglasses and to fix the connection point that was fraying with my laptop adapter and cord, it's still a bit too pricey for me to experiment with different uses. There's been one exception, however, where I am happy to dedicate two packages for one hack, and it's moved me from Sugru user to Sugru proselytizer -- customizing the fit of a mobile bluetooth earbud. I loathe holding a phone while talking, and I am yet to find a bluetooth earbud that stays put in my ear, so that I don't have to hold a phone.

Enter Sugru.

Traditionally, I wait five to ten (maximum) minutes for the Sugru to set in my ear, and then gently remove it, being especially careful not to distort the part of the mold that fits in the ear canal. Once set, it's this part that really anchors it to my ear/head.

As I would come to realize -- albeit too late -- this was only feasible with the original-formula Sugru, as the Family-Friendly formula seemingly has a different consistency and sets slower.

Excited to share my earbud hack with my wife and new in-laws (we're a tech-friendly family -- yay!) I gifted each of them a couple of packs after a recent dinner, and they pulled out their earbuds and together we walked through the process. I bought a multicolor eight-pack which would help us not to mix up molds by each choosing a different color. Frankly, in my case (I'm of legal age with no children), if I even noticed that it was now labelled 'Family Friendly,' was an afterthought. And if I did think about it, I likely attributed it to the new colors, and to the happy assumption that kids won't die if they inadvertently ingest it.

'Good on the Sugru,' I thought then, and continue to think now.

What I didn't realize, and what was not specified or evident, was that it takes a lot longer for the mold to set with the family-friendly formula. For most uses, this would not be a big deal. Yet to my disappointment, and to the disappointment of my wife and new in-laws, my 'incredible hack' became an exercise in frustration. Every time we took the mold out of our ears, the part that goes deeper into the ear canal would inevitably bend. Again, it's precisely this part of the mold that helps anchor it.

Instead of leaving it in-ear for ten-minutes maximum, we could conceivably have left it in for an hour or two to better set, but I'm not willing to leave anything in my ear that long, and I doubt they or anyone else would have either.

In short, I think Sugru could be more proactive and transparent in explaining how the Family-Safe formula is not as well-suited for certain applications of the product. I would never have opted for the Family-Safe formula had I known.

Especially when the currency conversion is done for Canadian Dollars (we live in Canada), 'losing' an eight pack by trial and error is a frustrating proposition.

Keep up the good work Sugru, but please update your website with an advisory on the type of applications for which the Family-Safe formula is and is-not best-suited, and the reasons why.

P.S. I was just perusing others' comments, and only here at Trustpilot do I see precisely the type of specification issued by Sugru, that would have been helpful had it been placed more visibly on the website: "once it's on it will take 24 hours for each 3mm to cure (the Original Formula) or 2mm deep (the Family-safe | Skin-friendly Formula) at room temperature (21°C/70°F)." Even that is a bit technical, but it's still the type of information that would have helped in making a more-informed purchasing decision.

Reply from Sugru
Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us and all your support over the years!

I'm very sorry to hear your recent earbuds project didn't work out well. Through our testing our Family-safe Formula has been designed so that it's as close as possible to the Original Formula in terms of strength and adhesion. The main difference is that it is safe for prolonged contact with skin, so it’s great for projects where Sugru would be in prolonged contact with skin (e.g. wristbands, headphones, eyeglasses, inside shoes, etc.). It certainly is a surprise to us that the Family-Safe formula didn't work quite as well as expected - though sometimes if the layer is thick it may need longer to fully cure as Sugru cures from the outside in. This is also something I'll certainly make sure to pass on to our Quality Assurance Team.

I understand that it can be frustrating to not be aware of the difference in curing time between the two formulas. We do mention this in our FAQ and we mention the curing time within the leaflets but I'll pass on your comments regarding this, as this is something we can certainly keep in mind for future changes to our website and packaging.

Our Original Formula does cure slightly quicker at 3 mm deep in 24 hours at room temperature (21°C/70°F), while the Family-safe | Skin-friendly Formula cures 2 mm deep in 24 hours. That's why we say that the Original Formula cures stronger faster, but you can totally use the Family-safe | Skin-friendly Formula for DIY projects too - just make sure you allow enough time for it to fully cure (the thicker the layer, the longer it’ll take to cure).

We also take on board your comments regarding the price of Sugru. Our vision is for Sugru to become a household brand, and with increasing volume will come decreasing prices. We’re looking forward to this day as much as anyone, because our mission is to help as many people to get fixing again as we can. We are working hard on our costs, by investing in manufacturing technology and optimising our supply chain, and we look forward to passing on these savings as soon as we can.

Looooove it!

Bought my daughter her first shoes. Crazy expensive leather shoes. In a month and a half there were almost holes in the toes of the shoes. Sugru fixed it and I don't have to buy new shoes. Yay!

But I think it should be made in smaller packages. I only used half of one small package, and the rest is now unusable though I put it in an airtight bag. That's a shame.

Hi Sarah

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review.

I love how you've managed to fix your daughter's leather shoes - we're pleased you manged to save money by fixing rather than replacing.

Though, I'm sorry to hear that you couldn't use the remainder of your Sugru! I can completely see where you're coming from with the suggestion on smaller portions - it's an interesting idea. With our current manufacturing technology, we're not able to introduce smaller or resealable packs yet, but we always work hard to make Sugru even better, and who knows what will be possible in the future?
