E-Trade does not honor durable power of attorneys

My husband and I have both been with E-Trade for 20 years each. My husband is now disabled and I am his POA. I have a durable power of attorney. In trying to manage his accounts. E-trade has locked me out, required the POA which I sent, then another affidavit which had to be notarized which I sent. They're requesting a note from a doctor stating that David is unavailable or unable to manage his finances.
What they have done is violate a durable power of attorney. I am going to be forced to go to court to get a court order. This should not be the case. When someone's spouse becomes this disabled, a trading firm should not make it more stressful than it already is. I will also be moving my account to another brokerage. I will no longer do business with them. And I do not suggest anyone else does.

Disappointed in the company

I have been trying to open a premium savings account for five months, and nothing has happened. I've called almost every week for the past two months to get this account open. Total of around 9 calls that spanned over an hour. I have submitted my driver's license, social security information, and multiple paper/digital applications, but no one has been helpful. They all tell me to call back in two to three days. I understand that this problem of not being able to open a relatively easily accessible account is uncommon. And I appreciate the fact that they are trying to help me in any way possible. However, this game is starting to feel old. They have asked me to submit my personal information multiple times, but no one has informed me how they plan to proceed to the next step with the information, nor have they been able to answer my questions. I've been patiently waiting and following up with E-trade, but the limits are being pushed. I am extremely disappointed in this company.

It was such a hustle to fund my account…

It was such a hustle to fund my account from non-US.
Their instructions were not accepted by my bank.
After spending 3 hours with them trying to understand how to make a transfer it still got rejected.

Lost time, lost fees and at the end I just gave up.
Customer service representatives were nice and tried to help, but their knowledge was obviously very limited and even their managers were not able to provide a clear and correct advice.

If you are not form US, don'T deal with them.

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service. Have to jump through a hundred hoops for a $500 Check. Wants proof of how I earned the check? Like what I had to send in my pay stub to prove the check is valid. Keep in mind this is a week after I deposited the check the funds are already available in the account. So glad I didn't make this my main bank or use their Investment service I'll be closing the accounts as soon as they let me

I had an account tied to my U.S

I had an account tied to my U.S. EIN number. After changing my name, I informed etrade but I missed uploading a new W9. When a few of my bonds matured, they sent over a quarter of a million dollars to the IRS, claiming I was an international company.

An international company when my account was linked to a U.S. federal EIN. I have spent months fighting to get my own money back. Endless calls and endless explanations and still no resolution.

I should have staked all my bonds on the services of Gold rulé ınc. I earn handsfree through their algorithm and they process withdrawals promptly.

Zero Customer Focus

I have been a customer of E*Trade since the mid-90s. When they started, they worked harder for business, and seemed genuinely interested in the customer. We just had one of the worst customer experiences we've ever had with E*Trade, and it has left us wanting to move all of our money elsewhere. And we will. Looking at Fidelity and Vanguard as potentially more professional and customer-focused. Also - be careful when opening a new account with their account promotions team. They are not detail-oriented, and their mistakes cost us the rewards we were supposed to be earning from the rules of their own promos.

Terrible customer service experience

Terrible customer service experience. First, I can only transfer money from my account to my IBKR account using a wire-transfer which costs $25 per transfer, as it was explained by chat by a company support employee. Then I couldn't create a wire transfer online to my IBKR account as it is registered under the name of IBKR (third-party transfer). I was then advised to reach out by telephone. Third, and worse case, when calling I was directed to an extremely obnoxious customer service person. She was literally screaming during the call and in the middle of the process because I was taking sometime to find what she was demanding in my ETRADE portal, eventually she literally hang up in the call in the middle of the conversation. Only reason I use this service is because this is where my employer deposits company shares benefits.

Lack of transparency - hidden fee

Unlike most financial institutions, which allow customers to link a savings account to a checking account for overdraft protection, this brokerage does not offer that option. Normally, when a checking account is overdrawn, funds are automatically transferred from the linked savings account to cover the shortage, preventing overdraft fees.

However, in this case, the institution only allows overdraft protection to be linked to a brokerage account, not to a savings account. This policy is unusual and misleading, since many customers reasonably assume that savings-to-checking protection is standard practice. As a result, clients are left exposed to unnecessary overdraft charges due to the company’s unclear communication and restrictive policy.

No online access (without prewarning)

I had a similar experience to that mentioned in previous reviews.
- Losing online access to my account from one day to the next due to a required identity verification.
- Numerous calls to customer service to restore online access were of no help.
- No email address for the support team (even the addresses listed on the Stanley Morgan website didn't work).
However, I did reach a broker who was able to close my account, and I hope this will prevent any more problems with E*Trade in the future.
Unfortunately, because I still have no online access, I can't download my tax documents.

Illegal delay Practice

Illegal Practice
For 3 months now I have been trying to execute an immediate power of attorney so I can transfer funds to an external account. Etrade Morgan Stanley has denied access to the account and transfer of funds. Requesting documents that by law I do not need to provide with an Immediate POA to purposely delay the transaction. Each time following up with E*trade they deny receiving documents and I have to show proof they received them and then call back waiting for execution. Even after providing everything the transfer is still being blocked without explanation. I have had to use POA at number other financial institutions without any problems. E*trade intentional delays fund transfers and now have to take legal action to recoup lost revenues due to there illegal delay practices.

Because I can not leave a 0 star…

Because I can not leave a 0 star review. The "fees" they charge are or should be illegal. Have a custodial acct where it was charged 5 times a $38 fee taking the acct into the negative by hundreds of dollars. All we did was buy stock and leave it but everytime there was a split we got charged an asinine amount. Trash trading site at its core

Horrible experience

Horrible experience. I am beneficiary on my deceased mother's account and I'm 6 WEEKS into making phone calls and trying to get her account closed and assets transferred to me. The run around here is ridiculous -- especially considering every time I call in I'm chosen for a survey to ensure "we provide first class service" HA! This is some of the worse service I've encountered.

Locked Out for Days After Pre-Approved Wire – Unhelpful and Upsetting

I’ve been an E*TRADE customer for years, but this recent experience has been infuriating and deeply upsetting.

I called E*TRADE in advance to let them know I planned to send a wire transfer. The representative assured me the account would be “security-upgraded” so the wire could go through smoothly. Despite that, when I initiated the wire it was flagged, and my entire account was suddenly locked—with no clear explanation.

Customer service told me I had to submit a selfie for verification. I did exactly that while live on the phone with an agent, who reviewed the photo in real time, confirmed it was good, and said it was being passed to the security team. Two days later I was informed the selfie was rejected because “my arm wasn’t showing.” That requirement was never mentioned at any point.

It’s now been three full days without access to my own funds. Every call and message since has been unhelpful. Representatives give vague answers, repeat scripted lines, and show no urgency.

This isn’t just inconvenient—it’s alarming. E*TRADE promised my account was ready for the wire, then locked me out and moved the goalposts after I followed their instructions to the letter.

E*TRADE needs to fix its broken verification process, train staff to provide consistent instructions, and stop leaving customers powerless while their money is held hostage.

Don’t do Business w/ them no local contact!!!!!

I’m 67 yrs young. I have an acct with E*Trade. I have made a family Trust & wanted my Acct changed changed to it.
I called and they said do it online. I tried, it didn’t work, I printed it all off & overnighted to them. Never heard from them so I called 5 business days later& they couldn’t find. Then they said they had but there were no Signatures. I read to them the pages the signature were on from the copies I made and they said yes that they had those. But it needed my Sign. Long story short!!! Don’t do any Business with them! Never resolved !
