As many others have said...the site is seriously let down by the moderation 'team' and its leadership.
So, diving right in, let’s get to the bulk of this review...the moderation of HotUKdeals. Where do we start? Basically, conversations with the 'the team' usually go something like this for most people...
User; "I have a problem"
HotUKdeals; "you don't have a problem"
User; "I think the way this was handled is wrong"
HotUkdeals; "No it wasn't"
etc etc etc
It's petty, its useless and its totally toxic to the user base. More and more people are becoming unhappy day by day with the behaviour of 'the team'. They fail to take on any form of feedback, instead preferring to throw about accusations of wrongdoing. To put it bluntly, they are always right, and the user is always wrong.
One of the big problems is the perceived 'bias' of the team, and in some users' opinion...the corruption of the team.
Comments that fit the agenda of certain team members are left, whilst other comments are deleted. It's whatever social or political stance the team member is aligned with that remains. Another problem is the 'old boys club' mentality of the team and certain users - usually 'experts' (the name they use for users who help out on the site) or people who bring in the revenue for Pepper as a whole. They get away with everything, and always seem to have a Pepper on their side. It’s a you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch your back world. It’s not just Experts though, there seems to be a myriad of hidden relationship between certain users and members of the team, giving preferential treatment to those users.
Often you’ll see a deal posted by a ‘regular’ user, only for it to disappear for some odd reason...only to reappear, but this time posted by a user in league with the Peppers or a user that is actually a Pepper. More often than not, the deal now has the appropriate affiliate links as well. Kerching (for them!). It happens time and time again. Whether these relationships are personal, economical or other - we don’t know...but it happens. Everyone can see it, but just try and broach the subject – not happening. Usually a Pepper will come along to condescendingly explain the decision, using arbitrary points and seemingly made up logic. Comments criticising the decision or the team will then get deleted, effectively trying to brush everything under the carpet, with the only course of appeal the ‘kangaroo court’ that is the ‘contact us’ link – which is of course ran entirely by ‘the team’. It’s a bizarre and nonsensical approach to dealing with user’ complaints – effectively giving the illusion that some kind of ‘process’ has taken place, but in reality, nothing will likely have happened at all.
There’s also an assertion from the Peppers that decisions are made by the team as a group. Alluding to it being some kind of fair and honest, democratic process. IMPOSSIBLE! The maths just doesn’t add up. Comments, infractions and snotty remarks are dished out in minutes, with the only constant being, those who seemingly benefit from the decision – whether that be the site, or whoever the team has a buddy relationship with. At least, that’s the feeling I, and many others get.
Trustpilot. Let’s look at the reviews. HotUKdeals has a good score on here right? Yep. But look at all these negative comments criticising the site (mainly moderation). What’s going on? Well, let us look at just one example...May 24th 2020 – check out the metrics of the reviews on that day. An absolutely HUGE influx of new Trustpilot users leaving one line, five star reviews. Strange? Most certainly. Some will think they are paid for reviews designed to artificially tilt the TrustPilot scales. But who knows...TrustPilot should and hopefully will investigate. Then, lets dive deeper. Reviews that HotUKdeals have tried to suppress on here, with varying success (just look at the stats on TrustPilot). But it is happening. Most notable are the reviews that they asked to be removed, but haven’t been – says everything. Look at the HotUkDeals ‘team response’ to Jordan. Now imagine that kind of response but 100 times worse when dealing with ‘the team’ on site. You’ll get a feeling for how they treat people.
I know a lot of users, including myself, have felt victimised and harassed by the moderation team. It always seems to be as a result of questioning a site policy or negatively impacting a Pepper or a friend of the Peppers. Suddenly you will have a target on your back. Whether this is actually happening, only 'the team' knows. When someone is given power, and also anonymity (the team is never explicitly identified when dealing with the community) - then that is a very dangerous combination that could lead to the abuses that the community have perceived.
Do better HotUKdeals. Do better.
