Do CILEX instead!
I have just completed and passed the NALP L4 Diploma and write this with a heavy heart after trying to address issues with the course notes as I went along. I even went so far as writing to the CEO, but I got a vague response fobbing me off. Oh how I wish I had done a CILEX course! First up, the course notes consist of 10 typed PDFs - 1 for each Unit. No professional online learning, self-testing process, etc. as most other educational companies provide. They claim they have been spell-checked and fact checked but this isn't the case. They are littered with errors. Here are some examples: 1) I started in 2022 but was learning about how EU Law and how 'upcoming Brexit' impacts the UK. 2) When citing case names, there are errors in the name of plantiffs and defendants, causing confusion when conducting external research and quoting cases in assignments, 3) numbering makes no sense, e.g. 'please refer to point 4 above', when there are only points 1-3. 4) Diagrams that cannot be seen as they handwritten and are obscured - but no clearer version available when requested and then told 'you don't need it anyway'. 5) Appendices missing, but when requested told 'you don't need them'. It just seems so unprofessional when they stand for upholding high professional standards for the paralegal profession! The notes are littered with typos and mistakes, e.g. a page title 'Property Law' is 'Proprty Law'. Much of the notes contradict and include the author's personal views and interpretation. I did raise all these issues throughout the course, but I was told that it either did not matter, or they admitted things were mistakes or typos but never re-issued the course notes. I feel so sorry for any prospective students. The final straw was my final assignment for unit 10, with questions where I was asked to explain a legal process that ceased to exist in 2020 and the course notes stated clearly that they would not cover that process as it no longer was valid. So how can I answer a question about it?! You cannot speak directly with a tutor but through your college, who conveys messages and sends back the response. I thought the tutorial support would have consisted of a bit more of a direct approach so I feel that is not made clear at the outset. Furthermore no feedback whatsoever is supplied. So if you are weak in a particular area of law or have misunderstood something, you will never know! Unfortunately I cannot recommend this course. I have tried to provide feedback to the NALP but they just don't want to hear it. They claim they used a third party company to proof read the course notes (who has no legal knowledge - errr, okay but why?) and therefore I can only conclude they were ripped off as they let loads of errors slip through from simple typos to missing appendices. Had I known what I know now, I would definitely do the CILEX paralegal course. Update May 2024 - after upgrading to associate membership in March 2024, providing proof of qualification, I am still shown as an affiliate (non-qualified) in their online search database as of May and have to write to them to get this amended. Basically admin seems to fail them and affects paralegals who qualified through them as the NALP listing is therefore incorrect and can affect credibility when it comes to proving qualification.
