Horribly incompetent when anything goes wrong

Unfortunately, this company is not as great as they first appear, or as comes across from most reviews. In fact, after all said and done (and they've received their money) they are one of the worst I've ever dealt with. Long story below, giving more of the nuances of what happened. In short, I understand they get good reviews from many people because of the nice first appearance and low cost, but when anything goes wrong they will cost you a lot of money and stress, due to them cutting any corner they can combined with great incompetency. I lost my customs deposit (25% of the value of the goods) with zero help from their side, even though I paid them e400 to take care of customs. In the end they just started avoiding my calls despite this being all their responsibility. Do not use this company if you don’t want to get screwed over.

*Response to company reply: Obviously European Moving is not going to admit their incompetency and come with excuses, illustrating what clients will experience when they hire them. If they did everything okay, then what happened to my deposit, why didn't I get it back? The paperwork was not in order, and this company had no actual involvement in the moving process and did not know what to do, so they ignored me and the paperwork deadline passed. To people considering European Moving: yes it may go smooth (as shown by positive reviews) or it may not. My recommendation is to not take this risk and go with a real professional moving company, rather than a sales company that just subcontracts to the cheapest possible option to handle your stuff.

What happened:
The first contacts were great, and my case officer (George) appeared very very nice and helpful (although a bit long-winded, making every conversation last three times longer than needed).
Then came the day of the move... The driver showed up four hours earlier than the earliest agreed upon time, and literally did not speak a single word of English. Nonetheless, he did his best and we got everything in the van with no major issues. One hour later, I got a call from George, stating my van was stopped at customs. I had paid European Moving e400 to make the customs papers, but it turns out they had done nothing with the money, no documents had been prepared at all and the driver had been detained. George stated this had never happened before (though I later heard from other sources this is default in Norway) and he didn't know what to do at all, simply asking me to call several customs agencies and figure it out basically by myself. Eventually, after being on the phone for hours, sent back and forth countless times, I prepped the documents that were asked. Customs however also demanded a deposit of 25% of the value of the goods, because they couldn't communicate with the driver and didn't trust the situation due to lack of any papers. With no other option, I paid. Finally, the driver was let go a day later, with George being no help at all, except for wasting my time in an already very stressful situation with empty statements that this was so odd and endless apologies (leading to me also making long international phone calls). After unloading at my house, I once again ended up in endless phone conversations with Dutch customs as well as the driver’s Polish company (subcontracted by European Moving ), as the import into Netherlands had also not gone according to regulations. I even had to physically go to the customs agency on the weekend. They indicated I had to prepare certain papers before a Monday deadline. In the meantime, European Moving/George started becoming less and less responsive, which made me miss the deadline as I could not get the administration done by myself. It should never have been up to me anyway! I paid them to take care of this!
So, to conclude, this company will only work out for you if everything goes according to plan. They do minimal effort, hiring the cheapest labour, and are not capable of solving any problem for you. Use another company.

Hello Dennis

We are extremely sorry to hear that the service did not go as smooth as anticipated.

Unfortunately with any moves that involve customs clearance there can sometimes be delays or issues on the border that are beyond our control, although this is very rare.

I can confirm that any customs clearance fees were included and paid for by European Moving as agreed. However, we do make it clear that this does not include any taxes or duties that may need to paid on your goods, depending on their value and/or if they are not used personal effects.

The issue on the border was due to the taxes/duties and not the customs clearance. The 25% deposit requested by the customs agents was due to the value of your goods and nothing to do with the drivers communication.

All documentation, including the declaration, was completed by yourself. Unfortunately, as the goods belong to you we cannot liaise with the border agents on your behalf and therefore you were required to arrange this part yourself in order to claim your own 25% deposit payment back.

After reviewing the communication we are confident that George dealt with the issue in a calm, polite and professional manner throughout.

We are pleased that your goods were delivered without further issue.

Kind Regards
European Moving Team
