Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 853 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the customer service, finding it unhelpful and difficult to reach a real person. Issues with payments were also a common complaint, with transactions not processing correctly or unexpected charges appearing. The overall service quality was frequently criticized, and many people struggled to make contact with the company, often encountering automated systems or long wait times. However, some customers also noted positive interactions with staff, describing them as professional, helpful, and understanding, particularly in specific branch locations or when dealing with sensitive situations. Despite these positive individual experiences, the general sentiment regarding staff was mixed, with other reviewers reporting rude or unhelpful encounters.

Bank transfer

I have made an international transfer requested from my ISA account nearly 2 months ago, which has still not been completed.

Despite contacting customer service on multiple occasions (at least 10 times), I have not been provided with any clear explanation, timeline, or confirmation of where the funds currently are. The responses I have received indicate a lack of visibility and ownership of the issue, which is unacceptable for a regulated financial service.
Halifax is one of the worst bank ever! poor standards, poor customer service and poor everything

customer service or lack of

i get the bank has to move forward, and change the credit cards from mastercard to visa, but the card payment details changes too. the chat service is an absolute shambles. Clearly offshore and whoever is at the other end is dealing with multiple enquiries at the same time. 1/2 and hour between each question and response is ridiculous.. waste of time

Halifax online banking and as mortgage provider is excellent

I think most of these reviews are very personal depending on the local branch but as an online bank and mortgage provider we have found Halifax one of the best. We have a local branch when other banks on the high street have closed. There's also one near my workplace. Overall I find staff helpful and efficient. I wish opening hours were longer for in person banking and questions but that's something I work around.

Hopeless hapless Halifax online

In January hx replaced my mastercard with a visa card for their commercial benefit. There was a changeover period ending yesterday so now the mastercard is dead. But for 2 months they keep declining small online transactions citing security and telling me it's for my benefit. Yeah right. In a final attempt to fix this visa card they asked me to allow them to photo my passport. But with equipment that says my phone is too close or when I back off a Millimetres, too far away!! The level of incompetence is astounding - including a useless chat bot and understaffed chat line. I give up. They don't care of course about one customer as they can spend hundreds to get one more. The fish rots from the head.

Thank You Halifax Team Newport

Thank You very much to the team at Halifax, Commercial Street, Newport, for their help over many years.
I travel regularly to Newport to use the bank from Penarth and always receive great customer service tailored to my needs as a non online-banking user.
I wish to particularly mention James who is always very helpful each time I visit the branch and very skilled in his role.

Would give 0 stars if possible

If I could give it 0 stars, I would. I bought a table in Dec 2025 on my Halifax credit card. I sent it back (as faulty) but wasn't given a refund by the merchant. I got Halifax to refund the amount, which they did initially but then (22 April 2026) re-charged the amount without telling me leaving me with a big bill for a table that I do not have.

And now they have a stupid customer (lack of) service arrangement which means even when I got through on the phone to ask them to reopen this summarily closed case (where I am in the legal right), they made me use the app chat, which is 100% useless. It's just an AI agent that doesn't know anything so keeps suggesting generic and inaccurate answers.

I am probably going to stop using my Halifax card and I'm going to have to tackle the merchant for the table through the small claims court thanks (no thanks) to Halifax's failure to protect its credit card users.

I would not recommend this bank's customer service to anyone. Genuinely dreadful.

Humans not robots

For pities sake please employ some humans! I've tried to order a new debit card via your robot and 3 times you've got it wrong. How is this cost effective? It's a time wasting bore. Sort it out!

Mortgage renewal robbery

Mortgage renewal came up so i rang the bank and spent hours sorting out a deal, everything was accepted, sent over the information required, they pulled the plug after my credit scored dropped due to their hard search on me, in the process of.moving to another bank they put me.on a vairable tarrif which is double the banks base rate and convienintly means they make a lot more money from me. Iv stayed with them for years and have now moved due to very shady behaviour in what is already a tough time for most. Would not recommend

Amazing staff at Halifax Ipswich branch

All credit to the Halifax Ipswich branch for their superb customer service in setting up an executors account for me to organise my mother’s estate. Their continued assistance with paying out to beneficiaries has been amazing. The staff i dealt with were Tim, Steve, Chris and Lindsey. Thank you for your efficiency and keenness to be helpful. You can’t beat being able to go into branch.

Hours and hours ringing...

Hours ringing, waiting and waiting, automated we are busy messages and then get to speak to staff who are nice but cannot help and transfer you and you are back waiting and dealing with bots. How has it got to this, they used to be such a great bank but are hellbent on automating everything, they closed my local branch down and the next nearest too. Have to travel 9 miles to go into a branch! Sadly not fit for purpose any longer. Closing all my accounts

Halifax - Just know that you’re awful and own it!

How Awful the chat ‘service’ is with Halifax. Even after putting me through to a human, the human didn’t help and then it went back to a bot. After asking the bot again to be put through to a human, eventually, when I got through, I was asked to provide information about a transaction - this was never my query, it was about the ultimate rewards account. I was then given a number for me to call that doesn’t work. After the experience, the feedback survey opened and then closed an hour later in the middle of the night. I’ve been an ultimate rewards customer for approx. 15 years and this was the ultimate reward! Oh and Halifax, don’t bother with a generic response about how sorry you are for my experience. Save yourself some typing and pop something generic from AI, this is a skill that appears to have been mastered, no matter what the query. Just know that you’re awful and own it!

Sub-optimal

Unlike First Direct, Chase, Amex.. trying to get hold of a Halifax representative by phone takes an eternity. And, unlike the reputable and highly efficient others I mention, Halifax isn't even available after hours.

At my last three attempts, their system states they are unusually busy which is somewhat ironic if not deeply cynical and disrespectful, given it is an unchanging and, therefore, default message.
Charming.
A 20 minute wait is the stated norm; it often takes nearer 25 minutes.

This sub-optimal service worsened markedly during Covid (it had a slight impact on First Direct who remained 24 hour) and no discernible effect on Amex.)

Not professional
Not attentive
Not acceptable.
Changing cards after many years for proper service.

Me thinks Helifax (no sic) would still find a new excuse where challenged.

Such as here, then?

What say you, Halifax?

....Nothing, I don't suppose.
