School Admissions Advice

Rhys Palmer and his team provided us with excellent advice related to a school admissions appeal. He prepared a detailed and precise submission to the local council on our behalf, which was extremely effective and ensured we were totally prepared for the hearing. Very impressed at his attention to detail.

We are beyond grateful to Rhys Palmer

We are beyond grateful to Rhys Palmer, Danielle Howard and Ffion Davies from the Education Law Department for securing our son a specialist placement and the IDP provision he needs.

Our son was initially denied a specialist placement at the local authority's panel meeting. Despite our attempts to engage with the local authority and highlight his needs, he was left without a school placement. We were told to make our own arrangements to find a mainstream secondary school for a child with significant additional learning needs.

That's when I decided to contact Robertsons Solicitors. I spoke to Rhys, who listened carefully to my concerns and explained how they could help. Rhys and his team quickly secured a tribunal date and guided us through the next steps and gathering evidence. It was a massive weight off our shoulders knowing we had experienced professionals supporting us and fighting for our son's best interests.

Rhys and his team were thorough, knowledgeable and incredibly responsive throughout the entire process. Their dedication to achieving the best possible outcome for our son was evident from start to finish.

And that's exactly what they achieved! Through negotiations, Rhys and his team secured a specialist placement and a comprehensive IDP for our son without the need for a tribunal hearing.

We couldn't be happier with the outcome. It has been a long, stressful and emotional process, but we now have the support, placement and provision our son needs. That would not have been possible without the hard work, expertise and commitment of Rhys, Danielle and Ffion.

We cannot recommend them highly enough. Our sincere thanks to Rhys, Danielle and Ffion for everything they have done for our family.

Complicated scenario fixed

Robertsons were recommended by a family member and we were not disappointed. My husband and myself were doing our Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney in what was a very important yet complicated process for us. However, Kelsey Marks walked us through everything in such a professional and uncomplicated way. Her easy-going manner made the entire procedure stress-free and gave us total peace of mind. Fully recommend!

Hi Karen, coming to us through a family recommendation and then feeling able to pass one on yourselves is exactly how we hope things go, so thank you for that. Wills and LPAs involve some genuinely weighty decisions, and it's easy to feel bogged down by it all, so it's lovely to hear Kelsey's relaxed, straightforward manner turned it into something stress-free instead. Peace of mind is really the whole point of getting these things in place, and we're so pleased you both have it now.

I would 100% recommend Kimberley Swallow, and her team for your conveyancing. I viewed the house on the 10th March and was moving in on the 14th May. I honestly think that is a lot to do with the efficiency of the Robertsons teams. They also were very easy to communicate with which is not always the case with solicitors. Excellent service- thank you so much.

Hi Bethan, Just over two months from viewing to moving in is genuinely quick for a conveyancing purchase, so Kim and the team will be chuffed you noticed the pace they set. Clear communication makes all the difference too, and we're glad it stood out, even if it does mean setting the bar high for the rest of the profession! Congratulations on the new home, and thank you so much for the kind words.

Unfair fee charges and misleading information

From the very beginning, I made it clear to my solicitor, that I could only proceed if legal aid was available. At no stage during our initial discussions was I informed that the firm would not be able to provide legal aid. Instead, I only received this information much later, after work had already been carried out and I was then presented with an invoice involving fees for legal aid check up.

Had I been informed from the outset that your firm could not act under legal aid, I would have instructed another solicitor who was able to provide this service. I believe I was denied the opportunity to make an informed decision before costs were incurred.

I consider it unfair to charge me for work that arose from a failure to provide clear information about funding arrangements at the beginning of my matter. As a client, I expected transparency regarding legal aid eligibility before any chargeable work commenced.I agreed with the payment that did not involve legal aid assessment.

I request that the invoice be reviewed and amended to remove the charges relating to this matter. I also ask the firm to review its procedures to ensure that future clients are clearly informed about legal aid availability and potential costs before any work is undertaken.

I am disappointed by my experience and hope they amend the invoice fairly and promptly. If a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached, I will consider referring my complaint to the appropriate independent body for review. Hope this review helps others when they think to request their services.

Hi Mihaela, thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to read the comments though we don’t recognise this as a full account of the matter. Funding options, including the possibility of legal aid subject to assessment, were discussed at the outset, and our terms of engagement were confirmed in writing before any work was carried out. That said, we always take concerns seriously and would welcome the chance to look into this properly. A review isn’t the place for us to do that, so we’ll consider your concerns carefully and fairly under our formal complaints procedure and respond via that process.

Mr Salway, leasehold sales can be particularly tricky, so it’s good to know the team kept things running smoothly and made the process a pleasure despite the complications. It also means a lot that you’ve come back to us for more than one matter. That kind of return trust is really the best compliment a firm can get. Thank you for the recommendation, and we’re always here if you need us again.

Excellent Support from Rhys, Danielle and Ffion at the Education Law Department of Robertson Solicitors During Discipline Committee Case

I have only kind words to say about Rhys, Danielle, Ffion, and everyone at Robertson Solicitors for the support they have provided me over the past two years.

I first approached them in August 2024 in relation to allegations made against me, which led to a Discipline Committee hearing and a Fitness to Practise case. At that stage, although I had several witnesses who were supportive of me, I was still very anxious about my position. I would have struggled to put together a clear, cohesive and persuasive argument that could withstand detailed questioning.

Once Rhys and Danielle became involved, they reassured me that my position was in fact stronger than I had realised, and they gave me the confidence to proceed. We worked together to draft submissions that significantly strengthened my case. They were thorough, swift, curious and attentive, often asking detailed questions in order to gain a full understanding of the facts and the wider context.

Their legal expertise was invaluable. They helped to strengthen my submissions by incorporating references to relevant case law and legal principles, which I would not have been able to identify or apply myself. They also helped me recognise the importance of certain evidence that had been requested from the University but had not been properly obtained. In particular, I was not aware of the concept of the “burden of proof” until Rhys explained it to me, and that became an important part of how I understood and approached the case.

We submitted our initial arguments in September 2024. Due to the strength and robustness of the submissions we had put together, the Discipline Committee decided to postpone the hearing so that further evidence could be sought in relation to the issues we had raised.

A year later, after numerous delays and a lack of communication, my University presented the limited evidence it had found, alongside further statements that supported my position. Rhys, Ffion, Danielle and I then worked together to draft a further strong submission, highlighting the shortcomings in the University’s investigation and explaining why the evidence ultimately supported my case.

Following this final submission, Rhys represented me at the Discipline Committee hearing. Beforehand, we had a call to plan how the hearing would be approached, including who would speak at different points and how certain arguments should be presented. That preparation not only helped organise the case clearly but also gave me a great deal of confidence going into the hearing.

During the hearing itself, Rhys spoke with confidence, strategy, humour and diligence, going on the offensive against any points the investigator raised against me by providing strong reasoned arguments in my favour. Often to the point the investigator was stumbling over their words and didn’t know how to respond which was an entertaining watch. He carefully set out the failures and shortcomings in the investigation, while clearly explaining why our case was much stronger. Thankfully, this led to a positive outcome and all charges against my name were dropped by the panel.

Some of the most valuable support Rhys provided was not only legal, but also in relation to my mindset. I came into the process feeling as though I was in a weak position and that I had to remain overly cautious, conciliatory and careful not to offend anyone with my arguments. Rhys helped me understand that, given the seriousness of the allegations made against me, we were entitled to be much firmer and more forceful in our submissions.

He gave me the confidence to strongly argue my case rather than remain passive, make unnecessary concessions, or overlook the shortcomings in the investigation. That shift in mindset made a significant difference to how I approached the entire process.

I am extremely grateful to Rhys, Danielle, Ffion and the wider team at Robertson Solicitors for their professionalism, diligence and support throughout what was a very difficult period. Their guidance made a real difference, both to the strength of my case, my confidence in facing it, and with no doubts the final outcome. I highly recommend them if you are going through any disputes which require knowledge of education law. The team here at Robertson Solicitors are incredibly thorough and knowledgeable and I have no doubt that they work tirelessly for all their clients as they did for me.

Two years is a long time to carry something like this, and we're so glad you had Rhys, Danielle, and Ffion in your corner throughout. Cases like yours are rarely just about the legal arguments.

As you've generously recognised, so much of it comes down to confidence and mindset, and it's genuinely rewarding to hear that shift made such a difference to how you faced the process. Having all charges dropped is the outcome you deserved after everything you'd been through.

Thank you for taking the time to write something so thoughtful, and for recommending the team for education law matters in particular.

Great experience with first time house purchase

Robertsons conducted the conveyancing for my first house purchase. My case was handled primarily by Gemma Berrow of their Barry branch, who communicated promptly and clearly - helping me to feel more comfortable throughout this unfamiliar and rather intense process. Having been told horror stories from friends about their slow and uncommunicative solicitors I was so pleasantly surprised with Robertsons. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Congratulations on your first house — buying a home for the first time can feel daunting, so it's great to hear the experience turned out to be a pleasant surprise rather than one of the horror stories! Gemma will be really pleased to know her communication helped take the edge off things. Recommendations mean a lot, so thank you for that, and we hope you're settling in well.

Robertsons/Amy Palin are the most wonderful

We instructed Amy Palin for our matter which was to set up a family trust. The level of support, understanding and commitment Amy shown through the matter was so heart warming. Amy took time to explain and articulate the process despite us having language barrier Amy was able to explain very well. Amy was so patient throughout the process and it was a pleasure and privilege to be Amy clients. As ever we truly feel Robertsons is a company who supports their clients and makes them feel welcome. We will forever treasure and remember Amy’s patient, kindness and commitment shown to us. I will encourage anybody reading this review to use Robertsons and Amy Palin for all probate, trust and wills matters. You will not get anything better anywhere else.

From a happy pair of clients :)

Working with Chris really made my stressful situation easier

Working with Chris really made my already stressful process so much easier. After enquiring via an email, he reached out the same day and managed to book me in to meet in person. He listened to me and my situation and knew exactly the support I needed when I wasn’t 100% sure myself. Chris was quick to respond and get the documents sorted, and had lots of patience and support during the 8 weeks we worked together.

I had an excellent experience with Robertsons and their team

I had an excellent experience with Robertsons and their conveyancing team. From the outset, they fully understood how tight our completion timescale was and worked incredibly hard to ensure everything stayed on track. Not only did they meet the deadline, but they actually exceeded expectations in doing so.

The team were proactive throughout the process, regularly chasing the other side to keep things moving and prevent delays. Their communication was outstanding—they kept me informed at every stage and handled all parties involved with professionalism and efficiency.

What could have been a stressful process was made smooth and manageable thanks to their dedication and attention to detail. I always felt confident that everything was in safe hands.

I would highly recommend Robertsons to anyone looking for reliable, efficient, and supportive solicitors.
