Warning!
I travel often for my work – I’m a magazine writer and photographer – and when recently I had to rent a car for a journey I decided to give a local business my trade instead of going to one of the big rental companies. My mistake. Yes, they were friendly and the car they rented me was very nice and in good working order, and their rate was competitive. So far so good. The troubles arrive with the matter of insurance. I always buy every bit of coverage on offer. And I did so here. I like to have peace of mind and although full coverage is an expensive add-on, it’s worth it – to me. I’ve never needed it, but I buy it just in case. Well, this time I did need it. The windscreen buckled. Nothing hit it, it just buckled. No mark where anything struck it, no rock, no bird strike, just concentric cracks inside the glass and perfectly smooth and unblemished outside – literally just driving along and kaboom, the windscreen buckled. It was still driveable – the cracks were all inside the windscreen. I returned the car the next morning and discovered that none of the insurance I purchased, and I bought all they offered, covered any part of the windscreen. None. At all. No deductible, nothing. I was liable for the full cost of replacing the windscreen, which in this case was hundreds of pounds. “You’re lucky, it could have been over a grand,” the man on their lot told me cheerfully, and although he was intrigued by the fact that nothing had hit the screen, said he’s never seen anything like it seized my deposit and charged me hundreds more for the repacement. So be warned. You might think it is a nice thing to give your business to a local firm, but not this lot. And it isn’t just windscreens either apparently. They’ve a list of other (expensive) items for which you are totally exposed even if you buy all the insurance they offer. So unless you’re prepared to expose yourself to these risks and costs, do yourself a favour and rent from a reputable firm, one that offers a genuine insurance policy. You’ll regret it if you don’t. I certainly have.
