Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 63 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Customers frequently complained about unexpected extra charges, hidden fees, and mandatory insurance costs that dramatically increased the initial price beyond what was originally quoted. People also experienced very poor customer service, unhelpful desk agents, long waiting times, and frustrating vehicle availability issues upon arrival. Some reviewers were happy with the friendly staff and efficient service provided by certain helpful team members during their trips. A few other people also felt that the initial daily rental rates were affordable and appreciated having convenient offsite shuttle options available. Visitors noted that the vehicles were generally easy to access from nearby locations.

AVOID AVOID AVOID
I made it clear from the beginning that I was not purchasing the LDW (Loss Damage Waiver), additional insurance, or the $35 after-hours Sunday drop-off option. Note they let me book a car through 8:30 PM drop off but would charge extra, so I suggested returning when they close... See the rest.

The employee then asked to see my auto insurance declarations page. I’m an insurance agent, so I pulled it up immediately. A few seconds later, he told me they could not rent me the car because my declarations page did not specifically show “loss of use” coverage.

That explanation made no sense. A standard auto declarations page does not normally itemize coverage that way. It felt like the real issue was that I had booked a very inexpensive car — around $15 per day — and once I declined the add-ons, they were looking for a reason not to release the vehicle unless I purchased something extra.

Rather than argue, I ordered an Uber, went to Fox, paid a little more, and had a much better experience.

Based on my experience, I would be extremely cautious about booking here if the advertised low rate is what attracted you. Ask in advance exactly what insurance documentation they require and whether they will honor the reservation if you decline every optional add-on.

For management: the employee who handled the transaction was easily identifiable by a prominent facial mole with several hairs growing from it.

Further I didn't find it comfortable that he had my credit card but as a scam artist he now had my information so I reordered a new credit card.

I would avoid at all costs

I would avoid at all costs. They seem cheap but despite assuring me that I was fully insured with a $250 excess and them confirming the car was returned without issues they took over $1000 from my account without explanation! Their “customer services” will not engage. From other reviews this appears to be how they operate. Avoid!

Rented the car

Rented the car, could barely understand a word they were saying. Returned the car. A few months later, we received a $1,400 bill for minor paint splatter on the front wheel well. The breakdown had them replacing a corner panel and front fender, which I am sure did not happen. We, of course, are disputing this. Do not trust them.

Absolutely terrible company

Absolutely terrible company. Cunningly located far away from the airport so they can hamstring you with hidden fees and be absolutely unable to cancel or refund you when you refuse to proceed.

Fraud

Dishonest practices and fraudulent charges. Use a reputable company like Alamo. This company has 1.5 star rating on Yelp because of their deceptive practices. Google "Economy Rent A Car Costa Rica fraud" before losing money to these scam artists. Alejandro Carvajal is the criminal conman who ripped me off. Beware! Stay Away!

Economy Rent a car is a solid rip off

Economy Rent a car is a solid rip off. They will charge for insurance after insurance after insurance after you decline it and charge your card without your approval AND not reimburse you for it.
This includes after you have paid through Travelocity.
I’m warning you, don’t do business with them.
I’m also reporting them to the better business bureau.

Recommend Highly > Just know the toll cost beforehand

I was dubious about Economy because of their lower rating, but found them to be professional and efficient. I wasn't told of the $15/day toll charge (you can decline and stay off the toll roads, but they're everywhere). So if you add the $15/day to the rental rate and still have a good price, you're good to go! I liked having the shuttle to offsite so I didn't have to manage that crazy MCO traffic in a rental car - just saying! Their site is only a mile or so away and easily accessed to get away and to return the car. The manager at the desk was thorough and patient. The car was nice - Nissan Kicks - and fairly new, very clean. Return was as simple - pull up, leave the keys, and they confirm the final check-out within an hour or two. I plan to use them again soon when returning to Orlando.

I booked this rental through Priceline…

I booked this rental through Priceline because it appeared to be a great deal at approximately $145. Unfortunately, the final experience was far different from what was advertised.

First, I was required to take a shuttle bus from the airport to an off-site rental location. While I understand some discount rental companies operate off airport property, this added time and inconvenience was not clearly emphasized during the booking process.

At pickup, I was presented with electronic signatures and directed where to sign. Significant charges and policies were not clearly explained before I left with the vehicle.

One of the biggest surprises was the deposit requirement. Because I declined the rental company’s insurance products, a hold of up to $1,000 was placed on my credit card. In my experience, rental car deposits are typically much lower. The process created significant pressure to purchase additional insurance coverage.

Several hours after leaving the facility, I learned that declining the toll program could result in a $20 administrative fee plus toll charges. This was not disclosed to me during the rental process. Had I known this beforehand, I would have made a different decision.

Trying to avoid additional fees, I purchased a SunPass at CVS, only to discover that using it with this rental vehicle was not straightforward and created even more confusion and frustration.

The vehicle itself was a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica with more than 69,000 miles. It shook while driving and displayed a persistent “Service Shifter” warning. The gear indicator was not functioning properly, making it difficult to determine what gear the vehicle was in.

What started as a $145 Priceline deal ended up costing approximately $230 immediately, plus potential toll charges and administrative fees that can reach $100. By the time everything is added together, this “deal” can easily approach $400.

Consumers looking at the advertised price should understand that the actual cost may be dramatically different from what initially appears online.

I chose this rental expecting value and transparency. Instead, I encountered unexpected fees, a large credit card hold, an off-airport shuttle, and a vehicle that appeared to need service.

I would not rent from this location again and would encourage Priceline to provide much clearer disclosure of the true cost of renting from this provider.

Sketchy company

Sketchy company. After realizing there was multiple additional charges increasing my rental cost by over 50% (including 17% management fee, licensing fee, etc). I asked to cancel the contract. That’s before I even pickup the car but after signing the contract. They then charge me a $50 cancellation fee. Total scam. The guy insisted I didn’t see the extra charges because I book through 3rd party, which is not true. I booked via their website, that never delivers an email or any confirmation! Felt powerless. Horrible experience.

Exceptional Service, Total Transparency, and Outstanding Value — Why I Keep Choosing Economy Rent a Car

I had already enjoyed a great experience previously with Economy Rent a Car in San José (Sabana), and once again they proved why I continue to be a loyal customer of this company. Their level of service, transparency, and customer care continues to be outstanding.

I would especially like to recognize Mariano for his excellent work and professionalism. He provided friendly, efficient, and personalized attention throughout the entire rental process. I also want to thank Daniel and the entire agency team for consistently delivering first-class service and making every experience smooth, clear, and stress-free.

One of the things I value most about Economy Rent a Car is the transparency they maintain throughout the entire rental process, especially regarding insurance coverage and pricing. There are no hidden fees, and every detail is explained clearly, which gives great peace of mind when traveling. In addition, their rates continue to be excellent and highly competitive compared to other rental companies.

The vehicles are always modern, spotless, and in perfect condition, reflecting the agency’s strong commitment to customer satisfaction. After renting with them several times, I can confidently say they maintain a consistent and reliable standard of quality.

I highly recommend Economy Rent a Car in San José (Sabana) to anyone looking for honest service, excellent prices, and truly personalized customer care.

Horrible experience

Horrible experience. Rude customer service. They rush you to sign everything. They put $1000 hold of you want to use your own insurance and give you crappy cars with debts and all kinds of issues! I didn’t accept the vehicle and LEFT!

Less than 1 star

Less than 1 star. They don’t accept any insurance unless you have your declarations page with you, or can access it online. Something weird at the Orlando facility can’t get on WiFi to access the Dec page online, and you are 20 minutes from the airport. Then I am charged with $168.00 hidden fee when I returned the car in Tampa. Everyone on the planet knew I was returning the to Tampa. No additional charges is what they told me. The absolute worst service in the universe. I returned the car 3:00 am in Tampa( they claim 24 hour service) arrived the airport 5:30 am ( yes 2.5 hours waiting for the shuttle driver) Missed my 6am flight. Avoid this company.
There are many other companies available. Rent from Economy and you will pay more, be frustrated, and regret it

ABSOLUTE NO NO NO

Please please please do NOT book with these scammers. I rented a car in Watertown, arrived on a Sunday, no one was there to give me the car. Someone called a night before saying you have to pay extra to pick up and another extra to drop the car. This company is a huge scam.

Sixt did not honor their insurance and demanded an additional $300

1) I ordered a car through a Sixt Partner, i.e. Economy Car rentals, with a full insurance package, for USD 843.88. Upon pickup, Sixt did not honor this order (this insurance) but forced me to pay an increased fee of USD 1,150 - i.e. increase the price by about USD 300, insisting that the order did not include their insurance, even though the Sixt logo was on the order voucher. I believe I was misled or deceived - if I had known that the price of USD 843.88 did not include Sixt insurance, I would not have taken advantage of this offer.

2) I ordered a compact SUV car, I was forced (arriving late in the evening and having to travel further at night) to pick up a large Mitsubishi Montero (pickup size) - I had no experience with such large cars and on the narrow roads of Costa Rica it was a difficulty and increased fuel costs.

deceptive pricing

Booked my first rental with Economy Car rental at MCO. Even though the daily bait rate was very attractive but at the time of pick up they add debit card charge of $18 per day because the normal authorization on the credit card is $1000 which is unheard of and then they do not let you use your own Sun Pass because all their vehicles are registered already and they don't allow that . that means another $15 per day and all that adds up to bring the daily rate to same if not higher than the other regular car rental companies.
in short all their price advantage gets wiped off by all these extra unnecessary add ons which they have made unavoidable and then why to go off site and spend the same amount of money on an off site more hassle rental..
