Ada and Vera’s
Classic London Cheese Box
I have reached what some people call ‘a certain age’. You will know someone who falls who into this category when they do something unconventional and not give a hoot what anybody may or may not think about it. In my case that ‘something’ was not the done thing. Hardly Avant Garde but perhaps a little unusual. I bought myself a birthday present.
I love cheese. Having calculated that no one in my friends and family circle would consider a dairy product an appropriate gift for someone about to enter their own swinging sixties, I hit the search button and found a little jewel of a company: Ada & Vera. They specialise in cheese. Their flagship product, The Classic London Cheese Box, had Happy Birthday to Me written all over it.
Given that my birthday was only two days away I ordered the Classic London, direct from their site through Shop (there are three main cheese offerings and wait for it, a range of the gooiest chocolate boxes this side of Willy Wonka’s Workshop.
adaandvera.co.uk) It was around lunchtime when I placed my order and that meant same day delivery. What ensued was two days of obsessing over the package on top of the fridge, thjis staring contest between me and the big cheese, at last ended with the arrival of family and a few close friends on the big day.
I acted swiftly. Picking up Vera and Ada’s box from the fridge I nonchalantly announced that it was a present from a secret admirer. The guests gathered around as I undid the packaging to reveal The Classic London Cheese Box. Everyone wanted to see what was inside. And what a mouthwatering collection of perfection it was.
Three generous slices (200g) of cheese heaven awaited my pleasure. Baron Bigod -a cow’s milk cheese from Suffolk, Spenwood - a hard sheep's milk cheese from Berkshire and Cashel Blue -Ireland's best-known farmhouse blue, from Tipperary.
All very different, all very scrumptious, all gone by the end of the day.
Also in the box was a packet of handmade crackers and a jar of seasonal chutney. Six hundred grams of cheese in all: a generous evening for two, or a good hour's grazing for four.
If ever there was a five star treat for cheese devotees, the Classic London Cheese Box is it. If you like cheese you are going to love what Ada and Vera have in store for you.
