Chris Slater, a ROGUE TRADER as previous review
CHRIS SLATER is a ROGUE TRADER as previous Review by Scott. Having attempted to close Aluminium Windows and Doors Ltd and emptying his workshop at Robin Hood Works, Knaphill Woking, Chris Slater is now opening yet another business DCS Projects with his wife Dr. Dina Slater Orthodontist as of November 13th 2024 just as the ccj's were arriving from unhappy AW & D customers.
We unfortunately engaged this trader and his 'team' August 5th 2024 who quickly relieved us of nearly £5,000 deposit for patio doors and windows. He then liased with our builders who, with his agreement removed a significant amount of brickwork from our lounge which we had emptied for refurbishment and underfloor heating. He then delayed several times including using the school photographer at his children's private school as excuse or he was responsible for child care. He mis-measured twice, delivered totally wrong size frames, said that re ordered frames were delayed to being the wrong colour powder coating, until we finally had a face to face meeting after 4 weeks letting him know we were feeling very uncomfortable about his poor communication and stringing us along and that he wasn't insured with any glazing regulator he'd mentioned. He said that we could pay a building inspector to sign it off at the end and that he didn't answer calls because his phone had been stolen. He then asked using the word 'please' to fit frames the very next day and we shook hands on the promise. His team fitted them and they were minimal, flimsy and shoddily installed. We got a building inspector in the very next day at our cost £450, who condemned the work as needing structural support and a structural engineer and that no measurements submitted were accurate which we informed Slater of and asked for the work to be rectified and completed.
It was at this point Chris Slater consistently ignored us despite emails, signed for letters, phone calls and visits to his nice house (with windows!) in West Byfleet none of which he appeared for even though he was in, or answered. His foreman Andy Bolans told us on a visit to the workshop that they had 9 customers waiting for glass and that one had threatened court proceedings and Mr. Slater was off with Covid and had no voice.
By this time we were into October and bad storms were arriving, We had to pay someone to board up the back of our house as we had no glass. Our new floor heating was open to the elements and we had to take steps to water proof it ourselves and check on it regularly during fierce gales and driving rain. We are over 70. We also had to live upstairs in our spare room and keep delaying deliveries of new furniture, tiler, builder, plasterer etc until just before Christmas. We were exposed and unsecure for 4 months from beginning of September until mid December. A very highly recommended, bone-fide window installation company came to our rescue despite being very busy. They could get glass in 5 days and the whole job took only two days to fit. This whole nightmare meant we had to cancel a holiday, our Christmas with our family and be unable to leave the house for more than a few hours during daylight hours or have friends and family to visit.
I have reported this man to Trading Standards and my local MP. He is also posted on Rogue Traders on Facebook. I cannot understand how he sleeps at night..we certainly didn't and the stress of losing the money and having an exposed house was unbearable at times, never mind his brazen fraudulent behaviour and absence of conscience. We feel robbed. His AW & D Ltd website was a fiction and how we found him but I notice it was changed to one that did not mention customer service, admin team or customer care just before he decided to close AW &D. His workshop in Knaphill was very local to us, in plain sight and to all intents and purposes legitimate. We'd had several other quotes too so we felt we had done our homework.
Beware of his next venture DCS Projects Ltd, business address Worthy House, 14 Winchester Road, Basingstoke for building and domestic house projects. He wasn't a director on AW & D Ltd Companies House but his brother in-law Wahab Shakir was his general manager. Our payment to him was made to Chris Slater 'Trading as' AW&D Ltd....he knew what he was up to! All of his five star Google reviews were family members. Sadly we didn't see his other 2024 bad Trust Pilot reviews following a similar pattern of fraud until it was too late.
