Never good results, after many years trying.
I have purchased hundreds of pounds over the last few years. Never having good results. I often felt it was me, but now I am convinced their seed is not what they claim. Also, I had a crazy amount of Rag Weed come up in the areas I planted. I’m not sure if their seed had something to do with that too, just more in those areas.

Poor Quality Products and Service
I placed an order for two hydrangeas, two silver leaf vines, and the pre-planned shady nook grouping of plants, which was supposed to be seventeen plants. A total of seventeen plants in all arrived, meaning four from my shady nook package were missing. Of the plants that did arrive, they were either root-bound or profoundly over-watered and nothing is healthy. I contacted them to say how unhappy I was. I heard back from them within a day, asking for photographic proof that what I received wasn't right. (Couldn't photograph the pieces I didn't receive.) I also included a photo of their pathetic hydrangea next to a beautiful, healthy hydrangea I'd gotten at the Home Depot for the same price. I've yet to hear back from them since then and they've yet to make anything right. While I am a seasoned gardener, I was intrigued by their pre-planned plots, but now I realize that I could have gotten the same kind of instruction of what goes well together and how to lay them out from ChatGPT and I could have picked out healthy plants locally for half the price and twice the quality. Also, I planted their morning glories two weeks ago and and I've yet to see them even break the surface of the soil. This service is starting to feel like a scam, which is a shame because they had great communication when I placed my order and I love the concept of their service.
Lackluster Customer Service
I recently Ordered a seed mix and realized I ordered the wrong thing. I ordered very early in the morning and followed up within a few hours and before 9 am. The rep advised they can’t refund me because it’s already shipped but somehow couldn’t provide a tracking number for 48 hours. I find that to be suspicious for something that’s already shipped. I usually order from Eden Brothers and will certainly stick with them moving forward.
Foxtail in wildflower mix
Wildflower seed mix produced and is doing great! Unfortunately so many foxtail in the seed. Not animal friendly!

I ordered for the first time this year from American Meadows, and I must say I am totally impressed with this company and their excellent quality plants. I ordered around 250.00 worth of plants, mostly for attracting hummingbirds, after having some hummers visit last year. Their plants shipped when promised, were exceptionally well packaged, everything was still well moist upon arrival, and all of the different plants were very healthy and are thriving very well and growing fast with all of the rain my area in the upper Midwest has had this Spring. What an excellent experience I have had with this company, and I will certainly buy my plants from them again next year. Best greenhouse I have ever found, with lots of hard to find plants that I just don't see at other greenhouses, and all of high quality to boot. I have been gardening as a hobby for decades, and I can't say enough good things about this company. Thank you. Michael B
I don't understand the bad experiences…
I don't understand the bad experiences people have had. all mine is good. I ordered some Bearded Iris Bulbs 3 years ago and the are doing great. I ordered milkweed plants to plant in the fall while dormant. they look dead but they grew the next spring.
Disappointing
Ordered plants. Four of them arrived dead. I wrote noting their guarantee, and then sent me two plants (not four) to replace them. One of the two replacements arrived dead. So I’ve learned my lesson: just go to the local garden store!
A pound of pure seed and no results ?!?
First and foremost, I started after school as a landscaper and learned from a master gardener with a 40 year clientele. Upon switching to manufacturing, I had a "side" business of landscaping for 20 years.
Bottom line is that I know how to plant and nurture living things.
I acquired the 2 acre lot next door that was 90% turf and decided to establish a meadow and got Mike Lizotte's book and read it twice. Ordered $90.00 worth of seed after using a Troy Bilt Horse tiller to make a perfect bed for seed. Mixed the seed in equal batches with sand and sowed it evenly, rolled it cross hatch and it looked great. This was in late November here in Central NY after 3 hard frosts.
The small plot I established to make sure the rebuild on the tiller is doing amazing. Seeds bought from another company. There is maybe 5% of the seed I sowed germinating. Photos sent - phone calls made.
Obviously, I'm not pleased and to rub salt in the wounds receive promotional emails daily from them.
I was not impressed and will not…
I was not impressed and will not purchase from them again. Some of the plants did not look healthy, were tiny or sparce, look wilted or dry, the soil of some plants was dry, and the packaging was terrible (I sent pictures). Tall plants were actually bent over and placed in a shallow box and stems completely broke off. There was a lot of breakage throughout. I wrote customer service and they did not address the bad packing. They simply said to check the roots, etc. If you watch their packaging video and how they express their great packaging, it's not true. I experienced careless, if not somewhat frenzied, packaging. I am dissatisfied especially that they did not acknowledge the terrible packing.
Terrible experience
I have the same experience as other reviewers - my tiny little plants were in a tray covered by something like a hairnet, so they were tossed all over, some were tossed out of their pots. In addition, the plants are so tiny - many just a 1 or 2 inch stem. I understand we are supposed to value the roots, but when i order a plant in a pot, even just a 3-inch pot, I expect a plant. This was a large, expensive order for me, it took a long time to get delivered, and i am not sure how many of these plants will actually survive. I have ordered from a number of other companies over the years and plants from other companies are actual plants, not just a tiny stem, and they are packed carefully with cardboard and plastic, so I know it is possible - but apparently not by American Meadows. I will not order from American Meadows again, and i do not recommend that anyone else order from them.
Best online plant company period
Purchased several plants last year (5/2023). They arrived quickly and very well packed, and were actual PLANTS (not roots or sticks like some companies send). They all took immediately and thrived. In Spring 2024, a couple did not come back. Their plants are guaranteed, so I was given several options; I chose a store credit, which I was told is good for 18 months. Even though it's their busy season they took the time to speak with me about my garden issues to help ensure future success. Excellent products, excellent service, and they truly care. You rarely find that nowadays! And their plants are competitively priced. Some may be a couple bucks more than cheaper companies but it is WELL worth the cost and you get so much more bang for your buck! I will only purchase from them from now on when doing mail order plants.
Never again..
Never again... I placed 3 orders over a period of 3 weeks, total about $600. Receive only one of 3 correctly. One order was packaged well, but 2 plants were the wrong thing entirely. Another order was lost in the mail. The "lost" shipment did finally arrive 20 days later. The box had no indication of which side was up. The plants were stuffed into a flat and they had been tossed, dirt everywhere. I called 3 separate times (45 mins-disconnected, 1hr, 10 mins - need to wait 10 days after shipment before they are willing to help, 1 hr 38 mins - agreed to replace lost and incorrect plants). The lost order once again came on a flat with plants tossed, dirt everywhere, some are on life support and shipment only took 3 days to get here. The replacement plants arrived alive and well and well packaged. So, the do know how to ship plants, just choose to do it poorly for large orders. For a premium price, you'd think they would care that the plants actually arrive alive and well. Nurseries usually care about plants, but based on my experience they do not.
Terrible service
They pack their plants with out any protection. I order 16 plants of coneflowers and they shipped with a large hairnet covering the the tray of plants. Just about all the plants were tossed about, dirt everywhere. Roots of the plant were exposed and very dry soil. I will never order from American meadows again.
They made good
I ordered from them last year and received nicely packed,beautiful plants. They even sent two new plants when the first ones died, so I ordered from them again this year. My mistake, no tracking on the plants just said a label has been issued. When they did arrive, half were dead. I called them right away, I was told to send a picture to their help desk. I did, no response. I called, hold time 4 minutes.i hung up after an hour and a half. I tried the next day, again an hour I also called on my cellphone, so I was on hold on both. I hung up after another hour. I’ve sent them an email requesting some kind of response. So far nothing. I think I will try to dispute this with my credit card. I definitely won’t be ordering from them again.
Update, I received an email after posting this and they have resent my order with strong beautiful plants, I don’t know if it was my email or this review .I am pleased with these plants and will give them another chance.. next year.
DON'T ORDER FROM AMERICAN MEADOWS!!!
I ordered 3 Dwarf Joe Pye Weed plants in 3" pots (the only option) for our Monarch Waystation. Not a big order but an important order. When it arrived today, I opened the box to inspect the plants. What an incredible disappointment!!! 2 of the 3 inch pots had soil, but no plants....the 3d one had a dead twig in it. I immediately called their number (802-227-7200) and their "recording" said I had a 12 minute hold; it was 21 minutes. I was able to leave a voicemail. I called back a second time about 30 minutes later; hold time was to be 16 minutes. I held for 44 minutes and finally hung up. I called back a third time and tried leaving a voicemail with someone in administration hoping my problem would make it to customer service so I picked Human Resources. (Customer service isn't an option when you call them.) No one picked up so I left another voice mail. I then used their scan and tried to upload a picture but it wouldn't take the picture from my Android. I did leave a note. I assume they have actual humans working somewhere in this company, but I haven't found one yet. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING ELSE FORM THIS COMPANY!!! Horrible service; nonexistent products. I simply want a refund, not another shipment of a dead plant and empty pots. No consumer should have to go through this much trouble to rectify a problem.
Less than half of order received - and it's a total loss
Received 1 of 2 boxes even though tracking says both were delivered. Checked our door camera, and only one was delivered. Inside that one box is a loose heap of dirt and empty planter pots with a few battered and broken plants. It's like someone tossed them in loose and then shook it. Clearly the plants were never clicked into their holders for transport, which remain wide open and flat in the box.
Three-fourths of my order is missing and the quarter that did arrive is damaged beyond use.
I sent American Meadows a message using their support scan on the box insert and have not yet received a response. So I called their support number on the insert and was disconnected abruptly after a couple of minutes.
I then called a different support number that was on the shipping box. The answering script said to expect a wait time of 16 minutes. I have been on hold now for over an hour and 10 minutes.
My next step will be disputing the charges.
Terrible experience. Never again.
Update: The second box arrived 4 days later on Monday in even worse shape than the first. I sent more photos and messages to American Meadows and sat on hold again a couple of times for over an hour with no answer, then today on Thursday, hours before I was planning to file a credit card dispute, they sent me a message stating they are refunding me the damaged items and prorated shipping. You can bet I will make sure it clears the bank, but I do appreciate that after all that they made it right.
