Handed out a 3½ year old Jack Russell without suitable checks carried out

I would like to express my serious concerns regarding the adoption practices of the Mill House Animal Sanctuary, now known as Animal Shelter Sheffield.

In March 2024, my neighbour received a 3½-year-old Jack Russell dog from this organisation. He informed me that he simply phoned on the off chance they had a dog, and a few days later, a Jack Russell was brought to his home. This is particularly concerning because we live in flats where pets are not permitted. Furthermore, there were no follow-up checks conducted to ensure the well-being of the animal after she was placed.

Our residential area lacks suitable grounds for an animal to roam freely, and unfortunately, this dog frequently escaped onto nearby roads and into local parks. My neighbour also never walked her, keeping her mostly indoors behind closed curtains. Tragically, this dog has now died a slow and painful prolonged death.

I urge animal shelters to conduct thorough home checks and subsequent follow-up visits to ensure the safety and proper care of the animals they place. While it is too late for this particular dog, I hope you will consider this feedback to prevent similar situations in the future.

I have previously attempted to contact mill house animal sanctuary using the email address provided on their website regarding this matter but have not received a response.
