Makes up excuses to deny your claim

Went to a dermatologist within network. Paid the $140 copay, and then was sent a bill for $394 because claim was denied by Avmed. I contacted Avmed and they said that it was not submitted by the doctor but by a Practical Nurse who worked for the Doctor. The office needed to resubmit claim and they would review. After it was resubmitted and reviewed, they still denied the claim and charged me a deductible.... after I paid the copay going to the network they were supposed to cover. This insurance company will do anything to get out of paying a claim, but will gladly take your monthly premiums. Run from this insurance company and look elsewhere. Florida Blue was much better.

The worst health insurance in Florida

After years of being happy with Florida Blue, I strongly advise avoiding AvMed. I decided to try them for 2025 and it has been a total disaster.

Their website says a doctor is in network, then when you go there and they tell you the doctor is actually out if network and it's still somehow your fault even though the rep on the phone can replicate the website showing the provider is in network?!

You dont get notifications when reps reply to messages sent in the portal, so you have to rememeber to log in periodically just in case. Then they hold it against you that they replied and you didnt get the message until after an event happened.

If you schedule a one time payment, you cant cancel it without contacting customer service.

The in-network doctors are very limited so good luck finding a good doctor you like.

When I found a nearby PCP in network, there was an 8 month wait for an appointment with him (at which point I will no longer have AvMed).

Next, if you are traveling abroad then you are unable to access their website outside of the US. If you use VPN from a US-based server, it still won't work.

They have no mobile app.

You cant remove a credit card saved to your profile without contacting customer service.

Their phone reps are useless and totally incompetent, often giving conflicting information with no way to document in writing what they tell you on the phone.

Overall, AvMed is by far the worst insurer in Florida. I know you want to save money, but please spend the extra money and use a real carrier like Florida Blue (I had them many years without issue) or Cigna (I had them just 1 year but no issues).
