Chickens are the underdog of the animal world – often out of sight, out of mind. Since 2005, the British Hen Welfare Trust has been changing that and, to date, has found homes for more than ONE MILLION ex-commercial laying hens destined for slaughter. The charity relies on its network of 1,400 compassionate volunteers, plus its 50 pop-up host sites around the UK, to carry out its lifesaving work. As well as rehoming, the BHWT helps improve veterinary care for pet hens, educates the next generation of hen keepers and promotes the use of hens as therapy animals in schools, care homes and even prisons. Its work is changing hearts and minds, one hen at a time.
