Blacksheep Van Reviews 

I Rented two vans from black sheep vans over two consecutive weekends in September. The First van had an engine warning light on dashboard. Should not have been on the road, had no power on the road and struggled to get up even the smallest hill. Broken indicator lens, chemical toilet had not been emptied.
Second van was only a quarter full of fuel. Arrived on site to discover that both gas cylinders were empty, and previous renters food was still in the van. Both weekends were ruined and a very bad experience.

Really helpful staff, well-kitted out van, good service all round. highly recommended.

Our experience with Black Sheep's Basel office was extremely disappointing and stressful from the very beginning.

When we arrived at the office, we had to wait 30 minutes for the main person to show up. Unfortunately, once he arrived, things went from bad to worse. Unlike other rental experiences we've had (e.g., in Norway, which was smooth and welcoming), this introduction was filled with anxiety. The staff member explained everything with a negative, almost condescending attitude—constantly warning us: “Don’t do this,” “Don't do that,” “Don’t scratch the rims,” “Don’t put diesel in the water tank,” etc. While it’s understandable to be cautious with a vehicle, the way he communicated made us feel more like a burden than a customer. The tone was patronizing and stressful, not informative or helpful.

We asked him to speed things up a bit so we could go shopping and start our trip, especially considering he was already 30 minutes late. He told us that the introduction normally takes one hour and acted like we were being unreasonable, even though we had already lost valuable time due to his own delay.

When we inquired about pillows and covers for the bed, we were told we didn’t have that option in our contract. We explained that the website didn’t even present an option to choose these items, and we assumed they were included. Instead of handling the issue professionally, he and his wife insisted we pay €30 extra and blamed a third-party site for the problem. No gesture of goodwill, just blame-shifting. We were so frustrated we decided to go buy our own instead.

We also asked about the “full insurance” we had paid for, and his response was: “Whatever is your mistake, it’s not covered.” Honestly, that made us even more anxious and uncertain about the trip. We felt like any small issue could be turned against us, especially after reading other similar reviews later on.

The trip itself could’ve been amazing—Switzerland is stunning—but we were constantly stressed about the van, especially knowing we had left a €1,500 deposit and weren’t confident in the company's fairness.

To top it all off, when we returned the van, we threw away the pillows and covers we bought ourselves (to avoid any mix-up). Later, we noticed that the staff actually came on a Sunday, pulled them out of the garbage, and brought them back into the office. We hope future customers aren't unknowingly using these second-hand, potentially dirty items. That moment really summed up our entire impression—cheap, careless, and completely lacking in customer care.

We strongly advise against renting from this company, especially the Basel Mulhouse branch. The stress, the poor communication, and the unprofessional behavior ruined what could have been a great holiday. Hopefully, this review helps others make a better choice.

Arrived to the Basel depot to collect the van, and from the get-go received a cold welcome from the female behind the desk.

After some trouble with them taking the deposit and AFTER the money had switched hands - we were asked if we had brought van cleaning supplies with us on our short backpacking trip (very unusual thing to fly to another country with) prior to being informed that we are not only responsible for cleaning the interior of the van (as to be expected, not unreasonable by any means) but also responsible for cleaning the exterior before our scheduled return.

However when we had enquired about van cleaning facilities local to Blacksheep, we were told there are NONE in the surrounding areas and that if we hadn't already brought our own cleaning supplies with us, that we have no other choice that to pay for their expensive cleaning package before we were allowed to leave with the van to begin our trip. We reluctantly paid the expensive fee and hit the road.

Leaving with the van, we quickly noticed that there were, in fact, PLENTY of van washing facilities within the vicinity where we could have paid a fraction of the price of what Blacksheep had shook us down for.

Upon return of the van, we had a lengthy wait to receive any news of their assessment of the van that would allow the deposit to be returned. After much dilly-dally, they finally returned the money, but charged an extortionate amount of money for a small surface scratch to a wheel.

Although there were plenty of documented surface scratches (some worse) on the vehicle before we had hired it, the surface scratch that was put on during our booking somehow meant that the whole wheel now had to be replaced at an exorbitant amount.

The whole process of renting through Blacksheep Basel was nothing short of a headache with subpar customer service. Very hard to communicate with and are very rude to their customers as soon as the security deposit has landed into their account.

TLDR; - DO NOT USE THE BASEL BRANCH OF BLACKSHEEP IF YOU ARE A TOURIST - THEY WILL EXPLOIT YOU FOR MONEY AT THE LAST MINUTE AND PROVIDE NOTHING BUT HASSLE WHEN TRYING TO CONTACT THEM TO DEAL WITH THE DISPUTE.

We won't be booking again as the customer service was terrible from Basel branch. We had trouble with leaving €2,500.00 security deposit they offered us to leave it in cash but didn't inform us of any other insurance package.
They didn't allow us to stay for the inspection on the return and gave us no explanation as to why. They then charged us an unreasonable amount so a small scratch less and an inch long on the wheel and told us the entire wheel needed to be replaced with no option of repairs even though the van had scratches in multiple different places so they clearly do not get them repaired.

Ruined our trip and now won't reply to any communication from us.
Avoid at all costs

Still no response to my complaint. They tried to flag my review rather than actually try and sort out this issue.

They always say you can tell a good company from the bad with how they deal with complaints. Totally ignoring the issue that they charge for a full wheel replacement for a scratch less than an inch wide. Absolutely outrageous

Nice van to Drive but more check on the vehicle needs to be stepped up as we wanted to use the awning and it was broken and it was a very hot day. When only two people the top bed should be removed to give more room.

Everything was excellent with BlackSheep in Martigny: great service, clear communication, and the camper was perfect for the four of us. We'd definitely rent again!

Great experience, everything matched our expectations. The camper van had all the facilities we needed and they all worked very well.

The experience in all was great: we rented a Van in their Lisbon agency, the van was perfect and very new, cleaned perfectly, everything was working and in order. The communication with the people of the local agency were good, Jose takes all the time to explain you also some good traveling tips. Just during the long and detailed explanation of the van systems, we received some wrong informations about two of them (water heating and water tank capacity - probably there was a small confusion cause they have many different vans), but we could find the solution on the manuals provided in the van: if you are not familiar with vans is really good you can learn by yourself how some specific systems work, and feel more confident.
The van is rented without any bed linen or pillows so consider to rent the relative extra service to have them if you come by plane and cannot bring yours.
The 2500€ security deposit was prompted released after their van return checks (be sure to have such a allowance on your credit card before getting there).
A tip: if you are in Lisbon city and want to reach their agency, don't take the metro till the airport but just take a uber/bolt from the city, the fares in portugal are very low and is not worth to take public transportation loosing a lot of time (like we did).
Regarding Black Sheep in general, we appreciated alot that everything is well explained on their website FAQs, and there were no unexpected clauses or hidden fees, also the mileage of the vans is unlimited (even if you most probably won't run so far away).
Black Sheep is a very good (france based) service that we preferred after a long research amongst other companies or private rental services for the quality and services of the Van offered (like the large bed for being comfortable), good fares, and we weren't disappointed in anything, we will surely rent again with them, we hope they will open more agencies around Europe.

Correct rental. We where picked up, the van was delivered correctly and cleanly (90 minutes for check and explanations). We had no problems on the way, a nice tour of Corsica, returned the van in time and all was good (30 minutes for the return check).

This is my second year hiring a great Blacksheep VW.

We had very good pickup and drop off experiences in Biarritz. Marie was very kind and professional. She took the time to give us all the information we needed and was used to talk in english. I can fully recommend her and the agency in Biarritz.
The van itself was clean and tidy. It was equiped with everything you need. We did not miss anything.
