Central Heating Boiler Failure

Daniel from Bray Heating and Plumbing came to investigate a fault on my Potterton Kingfisher Mf boiler which would not start. After inspection he said the fan appears to be very weak and possibly blocked on aeration. A new boiler was advised as parts cannot be purchased new, and the burner and heat exchanger has high amounts of rust. He quoted for a new boiler. I then got a different plumber to investigate, who found that the problem was a faulty PCB. The board was replaced and boiler is working again.

An update following your response.

Thanks Daniel,
My boiler was installed in 2004 and is under 21 years old (younger than my car!) not 30 years. The Mf was produced from 2001-2007. The boiler was faulty and off. As an engineer I do know about the sealed combustion chamber drawing air from outside. I removed the front panel to reveal and read the boiler data label which is on the RHS of the cast iron heat exchanger cover plate. BTW I do have a carbon monoxide alarm in the utility room next to the boiler and of course not a peep from it. The fitted replacement PCB was a reconditioned one from BAXI with a years guarantee.

Hope all is well.

On arrival the boiler was unsafe.

No cover was on the boiler, this is very dangerous with this model boiler as the cover stops all gases leaking into the room.

The boiler did have a weak fan, and there was high levels of rusts due to the boiler being 30 years old. Parts can’t be bought new from local suppliers. I also explained they could be purchased online. I usually don’t offer this service as complications can occur due to parts being used or reconditioned.

I made the boiler safe for you with no call out charge and recommended a new boiler with a quotation sent over to you.

This was in good faith and I was following due diligence within gas safety.

And to reiterate. You were not charged at all for any of my time and services.

Thanks
Daniel

Fantastic service from Braywick…

Fantastic service from Braywick heating, honestly couldn’t fault his professionalism and honesty, the work he carried out has rectified all the issues we had in the house, so happy we chose Braywick heating, highly recommended.

Poor communications - unresponsive

Having requested a quote for a boiler service and work / new radiators to our central heating, a visit was done but no quote was ever received. A couple of months later we were contacted to ask if we were still interested in getting a quote to which we said yes, but again we heard nothing more and no quote was ever received. All the more strange as he had successfully installed a boiler for us over 3 years ago which we were happy with. Very poor customer service.
