Insulation topped up over 1 foot of compacted debris

The previous owners of my property had a grant for cavity wall insulation which is honoured with a 25 year guarantee.
When I moved in I noticed condensation.
I then contacted the company, somebody came out, inspected the cavities.
They told me there wasn't one bit of insulation in any of the cavities at all.
There was a further appointment for the installer to fill the cavities.
I still got damp in my front room.
This year I decided to take out a few bricks above damproof membrane and was shocked to see over a foot high compacted debris all along the wall.
I only wish I could add the pics I took on here
I contacted Ciga with what I'd found.
They fobbed me off saying I'd disturbed the insulation and couldn't do anymore.
I told them this is an installer issue and needs resolving as now I've got a large empty void that needs refiling.
They tell me it all needs extracting.
My point is,if theres a guarantee still active that covers poor workmanship, why are they not looking into it.
I found dampness and black mold on inner bedroom walls behind wardrobes.
I contacted Ciga,I sent photos,they don't want to know.
Looking at a lot of other discouraged Ciga reviews I can see they are a terrible company. They are not fit for purpose.
They don't instill any confidence with their guarantees,we'll no guarantees.
I have no confidence in having the work fully rectified by another installation company only to have another dud 25 year guarantee.

Will act quickly and keep you very well informed

Contacted this company about problems we were having, easy to contact, got back quickly with a response and explained the next steps, CIGA arranged for an engineer to visit, nice guy and explained what he would do, he conducted the inspection and told us what he had found and would forward this to CIGA, who then gave us a copy of the report and explained what would happen next. We feel as we have been treated very fair through this prosses and kept well informed, we also feel this is a company that can be trusted

Impressed by Craig Lees Builders appointed by CIGA

We were very impressed with the remedial work undertaken by Craig Lees Builders, appointed by CIGA. Although the whole process from complaint to inspection and then the remedial work itself took quite some time, we have been treated courteously and professionally at all times. And most importantly it looks like, at last, the work had been done and the long-standing problem addressed. Thank-you

Valueless

I wrote to concerns at CIGA. Their barriers went up!! For months I asked for a survey and got nothing back except rudeness and stupidity. They even recommended I move the furniture around in the room that was permanently cold. I do not give in. I eventually came across this website and it seems I am not on my own! The guarantee in my opinion is not worth the paper it is printed upon. I take great exception to their unprofessional attitude towards me. Nobody there ever owns an issue, therefore it is never resolved - cute if you don't get rumbled! Just a shame there isn't a zero star rating.

Thank you for your review. After inspecting the property, the inspectors found that the area of concern was omitted from installation due to the cavity width being 23mm (the minimum to be suitable for CWI is 50mm) and therefore we are unable to assist him further. Upon further investigation of the rest of the property, no other defects were noted during the inspection.

If you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Services department at concerns@ciga.co.uk.

Provide all the facts.

My initial query was that we didn't experience any improvement in the heat retention in our house after the Cavity Wall Insulation was installed in July 2018 by a company that no longer is trading. Since then, my wife has had breathing problems, the cold bedroom air affecting her. I contacted CIGA who were sorry that know improvement had been made and that was unfortunate as not all fills are effective. I wrote back providing more information. They agreed to send an inspector who discovered that the cavity hadn't been filled properly, leaving large upstairs voids. A correction plan was then suggested which I wasn't happy with and suggested a less intrusive plan which was agreed to. The work was carried out on the 29 Sept 2024 to a high standard. This has resulted in a noticeable change in the heat retention, especially upstairs. Throughout my experience with CIGA I have found them receptive to my problem and flexible with the offered solution.

Dealing with CIGA

I contacted CIGA in January 2023 after experiencing excessive damp and black mould on the internal walls of the property I had purchased, which had cavity wall insulation (cwi) installed, and the company that installed it had gone into liquidation and closed some years earlier (Our bungalow was built around 1962, and the cwi was installed in 2003).
I contacted GIGA who I must say went to every effort to deny that the cwi was the issue, saying it was condensation, then that the condition of the property was to blame...this went on for some time, but ultimately, and as i pointed out on several occasions to CIGA, as we are located in a Category 3 (Severe) weather location, being only 82m from the south coast shoreline, the installation should never have been carried out (ref Building Regulations which were in force at the time of the installation and remain in force today), and therefore the contractor responsible was not only negligent, but broke the law (the b
Building Regulations which are criminal law - created under an Act of Parliament), and CIGA owed a duty of care under the law and the Guarantee to remove the cwi without further dispute... CIGA agreed to remove the cwi and stated that a company called Novora would be carrying out the work. and all further communications must be with them...!!
Since then the work was first arranged for August 2024, and cancelled due to Novora's machinery breaking down, then rearranged for 1st October, and cancelled last minute due to the 'team' not completing the work on the previous job, and having to go back there on 1st October...!!! Why the 'team could not come to me following this, a day or so late I don't know... I've been told now by email that its unlikely the work will be done before November 2024...so its getting on for a year since I first took this matter up with GIGA... in January 2023.
I have now emailed Novora's Regional Manager to try and get this matter resolved... However, It's interesting to note that when I originally checked Companies House concerning the company who installed the cwi, namely Miller Pattison Ltd, the list of Directors was almost identical to the list of Directors of Novora... and most surprising was that some of those listed are also listed as persons with an interest in CIGA... hhhmmmm.... makes you wonder doesn't it...

since this review was written a pair of raw-hides (couldn't call them cowboys as they had not qualified to that level...!!!) turned up to remove the Cavity Wall insulation, as father and son team all the way from Wales... They are supposed to have removed the CWI, but have not completed the work, left a compete mess, after telling me the loft was Ok, i got up there and looked to find CWI insulation had been blown out of the cavities everywhere... the bricks they removed and holes they drilled in my walls (in addition to those already there from the the original installation), were not repaired/replaced correctly... and 6 to 8 metres of walling did not get touched at all, apparently their drill was too big to get between the house and the garage...They did not tell me that though, they just wanted their form signing, it was when I walked around and noticed they had not drilled any holes in that section of wall I asked them if it had been done, and was told no...'cos our drills too big'... ye gods I could have drilled the holes myself...why didn't they say so, instead of trying to get the form signed and sneak off...
I am still having to deal with this mess the rawhides left behind...I've had to get the loft insulation sorted and clear the mess in the loft...and now the better weather is arriving, try and get the mess they made of the brickwork sorted... Novora are a joke, as is CIGA... I sent an email and photos of the mess left behind by their rawhide contractors, and to this day not one person from Novora has contacted me... Wonder how they might feel when i get the bills sorted and ask them for the money to pay them for the damage done by their Rawhides....!!!!!!!

Please be assured that our commitment is to address any legitimate concerns under the terms of the guarantee; however, the first address remains with the responsible installer. As you were advised previously, Miller Pattison Limited, is no longer in existence and therefore not able to complete any works. However, Novora Building Services Limited has agreed to undertake work on behalf of Miller Pattison. This is a contractual obligation.

Novora have offered you an extraction, and whilst we appreciate your concern that this has not yet been completed, they have confirmed they will be in touch with you again over the next couple of weeks to arrange for the remaining extraction. Our Customer Service team will follow up with Novora directly to also request an update.

If you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Services department at concerns@ciga.co.uk.

We are sorry to hear that you have changed your view on our services as you gave the team good feedback previously.
We understand your frustration with scaffolding remaining at your property which was a period of 2 weeks and 1 day after work had completed. This was sadly due to the sudden passing away of the scaffolding firms director which affected the whole organisation and was completely unforseen. We understand that scaffolding was taken down a day after your review and we apologise for any inconvenience this caused.

Appalling service

Appalling service. Had cavity wall installation in 2019 we have since had water penetrating through our living room window which caused our blinds to fall down due to damp and blustering plaster, we have black mould across the front wall which we never had before the cavity wall was installed. We wrote to CIGA and they claimed poor maintenance and they will not rectify or inspect the poor workmanship/ damage. We a have had to remove our house from sale due the damage this has caused to the front living room wall.
Company are a bunch of Cowboys, we are not dropping this case and now in the process of emailing BBC watchdog/trading standards and our solicitor any costs we incur will be passed on to them.
Evolve Home Energy Solutions carried out the work, under the instruction have just as bad reviews as CIGA, simply shocking they should be shut down, believe me I will NOT let this drop until l get this fully resolved, this not be happening in this day and age, people should undertake things professionally

CIGA will avoid as much responsibility as possibe

We were told the damp in the house wasn’t caused by faulty insulation although we never experienced damp until it was installed. They agreed to remove it but not repair the damage. The removal guy repointed some of the mortar gaps in the wall as CIGA said this was the fault although the house is only 20 years old. A different colour mortar was used so the wall looks a mess. Their report was inconclusive and they just want to avoid repairing anything. Cavity wall insulation is damaging to your home have it removed. Very negative experience and a waste of our time, not worth the paper it’s written on.

Why has CIGA got a bad reputation.

I have been asking CIGA to remove my cavity wall insulation as I live in a remote part of a village high up on a hill. The insulation should never have been installed in the first place, it was put in by a bad company that went bust. We have damp and mould in two rooms that have big voids in the cavity. How can cavity wall insulation keep our rooms warm if there are voids. I asked CIGA in 2016 to sort the problem out, but they will not. I have now written to BBC watchdog, if we all write to them as a collective group watchdog will investigate CIGA on our behalf.
CIGA does need investigating. I have also contacted my local MP and Lord Callanan Department for energy security and net zero who has concerns regarding CIGA. 'After reading CIGA's response today I suggest they get in touch and remove the insulation. If they do then I may give them a higher rate. I have already sent another e-mail to my local MP asking for more advice'.

Hi Mr Horn

After inspecting your property, we found that your failed cavity wall was due to rodent activity and potentially inadequate heating control. None of which are within CIGA's control. Our guarantee provides assurance that defects with workmanship or materials in connection with the installation of cavity wall insulation will be rectified. For any more information or to discuss further please contact concerns@ciga.co.uk and we will be happy to look into this for you.

Definitely no stars

Definitely no stars! I semi re-modernised a flat with a very elderly man who had been there for 41 years, 3 years ago. He informed me that CWI was installed in 2011, but never told me at the time, but gave me the 25 year guarantee. He passed away six months. I was then able to do a full modernisation, and a new tenant moved in soon after. It then became quite apparent there was a major damp problem. Maintenance co. would do nothing for me as I had CWI, they said it always caused problems. So contacted CIGA nearly a year ago. What a waste of time they are!! Inspector came in Dec 23 at 4.30 in the dark, said there was voids, and it needs a re-blow. Now I'm not an expert, but if you have a wet outer wall and a wet inner wall and the CWI is soaking, its no good putting more stuff in. I had a proper builder to inspect, and he agreed that would make it worse, also said there was no ring beam between the floors, so as I have said all along, its not a suitable property to have CWI in a block of flats. Their inspector said it can be extracted, and that is really the only option. This is being dealt with in a very unprofessional way by CIGA, many phone calls and e-mails being ignored, I'm no further forward than a year ago.

Transparent obvious outcome!!!@

Transparent obvious outcome! Poly beaded cavity wall insulation was installed into our block of flats in 2013 of which was ill advised at start and should not of been even recommended living direct on the coastline on the west coast of Scotland where we get hit by driving rain on a very regular basis for a large proportion of the year. A Very consuming process from start to finish with CIGA involving proof off Residents of ownership down to endless questions asked and pictures sent of rising damp within communal and ground floor flats. The original installers came out on behalf of CIGA to inspect blaming everything bar the Failed insulation and putting all down to lack of Maintenance and Residents not looking after over the years since installation 10+ years ago. The build was fine 30 years prior to installation otherwise it would of been pointless installing back in 2013 if the mortar had decayed along with failed window units and doors!!! It was even portrayed by installers that they only insulated the flats and not the communal areas of which not true when beaded insulation is evident within the framed area of back door! All Excuses to not honour the 25 year Guarantee and Blame Everything Else! Obviously the End Conclusion means Residents have to pay out of their own pockets to get this awful insulation removed of which is causing Great Damage to the internal build! How can Everything and Everyone be Wrong and you are Right surely 83% Negative Reviews is a Big Indication something is Not quite right? Ciga you just went by photos and advice from the installation company and couldn't be bothered to come out yourself and inspect of which Very Poor!! As Stated to yourselves we are the only block left with this in and another block approx 7 years back had this beaded insulation removed from the gable end of their build under the 25 year Guarantee as it had failed causing major damages to a ground floor flat and you advise that these poly beads will dry out under the correct circumstances? I don't think so Not on the coastline by the Clyde being hit by all the elements of weather!! This Claim should Never of been Closed on your part as the investigation was inadequate and not comprehensive in any way! I'm sure you will state I am wrong just like the other 83% of Negative Reviewers!
I'm willing to bet that when installation Removal company comes out to inspect/quote of which Residents have to pay for the removal of they will most certainly blame the damp issues down to failure of the beaded insulation within the cavities!!!! (HAPPY DAYS)!

Response; Firstly Ecosave did Not write to me or Provide Any Such Report! I had to send numerous emails to them and many unreturned phone calls before finally getting an Answer, they blamed everything else bar the cavity wall insulation as expected!
CIGA yourselves just sing of the same Hymn Sheet and as said previously its an Easy get out! I Instructed yourselves that I am paying personally to have insulation Removed of which now has been further surveyed and Failed Poly Beaded Insulation is to blame! As previously Stated it was ill advised and should Never of been installed especially where our build is situed! You Ciga even have the brass neck to inform me via email that if I have insulation removed via another Professional Company the 25 Year Guarantee is Null and void! It's not worth a Scratch Anyway! I don't think it would be needed Anyway once All Removed, so Stop trying to be so Smart!!!!!!!!!!

Response;
Honestly Ecosave aren't going to admit fault with their own workmanship or material used of which the 25 year guarantee covers so that should be where you come in and inspect, otherwise I would of just Reported issues to Ecosave in the First place instead of CIGA! ( Nothing Like passing the Buck)
Insulation now Professionaly Removed and Damp issues resolved and it's Great that the walls are no longer wet to touch. Ironically removal was by an Ex Ecosave Insulation Removal Technician! (Small World)!!!!
Cheerio CIGA.

Hi Mr Swinford

Our installer company Ecosave have investigated your property and identified deteriorated mortar joints and window perimeters defects. They wrote to you to advise this is a maintenance issue in which you returned to us for further advice. Once we received the report from Ecosave we reconfirmed to you that the issue is maintenance related and therefore we are unable to assist. If you wish to discuss this further you can contact concerns@ciga.co.uk and we will be happy to look into this for you.

Update : Hi Mr Swinford, as the Installer remains trading, the responsibility for this is currently with them. They sent us the findings over their survey and this is what we sent back to you.

Zero stars is more appropriate

One star is one too many! After damp patches appeared in the walls of my bungalow I had a survey done to find the cause. I was told that the cavity insulation was at fault and advised to contact Ciga. What a waste of time that was! They totally dismissed the report and said that the damp patches were not evidence of defective insulation or workmanship and have refused to do anything. Obviously the guarantee is not worth the paper it is printed on.

WE WON THE ARBITRATION CASE!!

One of the most useless and corrupt companies I ever come across, no one gives their name so there is no accountability to anyone. Staff are so rude and hard faced you almost feels like it must be a prank for something, but no its true, this is how they treat customers. Over 4 visits and they still have not rectified the problem, issue been going on for over a year. I did ask one of them which agency they are accountable too (F.S.O, Trading Standards etc) they told me they are accountable to NO ONE, can you believe that? I would advise everyone to avoid using CIGA, but because of all the insulation swindle, it leaves consumers with no choice. Despise this company.

UPDATE: After CIGA forced a 71 year old disabled pensioner through an lengthy arbitration process, they even went as far as to withhold a poultry £100 companion for bad service (how pathetic) they actually think they are providing an acceptable standard of service. Unfortunately for CIGA we WON! the arbitration case, with all the defence points raised by CIGA dismissed (they must have a child working their arbitration cases) they now are FORCED to pay the £100 (still a pathetic amount) and upto £10,000 of costs to put right what they have damaged.

Don't be put off by arbitration case, if you know your right their arguments are very weak that they collapse like a tower of cards.

In case anyone from CIGA is reading this (unlikely)
WE WERE RIGHT!, WE WON THE CASE! AND NOW YOU GOTTA PAY!

Not worth it

We purchased Our house 3.5 years ago and it had cavity wall insulation installed in 2008, every part of the house is cold so we paid to have a Thermal Survey done and it came back as quite severe so we contacted CIGA.
The response was as expected, not interested… we only cover defective workmanship and defective materials so we will not send anyone to look saying that a survey is misleading.
We provided them with the findings and they used every excuse not to come out to see.
How do they know if the material is faulty or not if they won’t even look at it ?
If the thermal survey shows the whole house is cold and they won’t come out what is someone supposed to do to show that there may be a fault with the materials used ? I’m not qualified to start taking bricks out to check .
You can’t speak to anyone and when you get a response by email it is never signed off with a persons name.
If you have a problem don’t waste your time trying to get help as all you do is end up get stressed

I was really happy with CIGA

I was really happy with CIGA.

They sent a surveyor out pretty quickly who did a report.

As it turned out it was not an obvious case where CIGA would have had to remove the insulation because of various complicating factors, but they proposed to do so.

They got a company called Dyson Energy Services to come and do the work and they even removed quite a lot of rubble from the cavity as well i.e. in my mind went above and beyond.

I felt that CIGA were professional and comprehensive.

CIGA guarantee is a total waste of…

CIGA guarantee is a total waste of paper and time. They fool people into a false sense of security stating “that the CIGA guarantee provides assurance that defects with workmanship or materials in connection with the installation of cavity wall insulation will be rectified free of charge for a period of 25 years from the date of installation” This is totally false.

We purchases a house which the surveyor noted the cavity wall insulation had failed. The survey was carried out prior to moving in. We were advised to contact CIGA re guarantee. The cavity wall insulation was installed 22 years ago but has cause untold damage and should never have been installed in this property or this geographical area. So most likely mis-sold. Company who installed no longer exists. No inspection from CIGA. Just go from images and make assumptions as to the cause.

Email from CIGA
“Whilst your comments are noted, the condition of the outer wall surface along with poor re-pointing, gutter and downpipe overspill and poor drainage are sufficient justification to reject your claim.”

They are not interested and will just make up their own conclusions without inspection or a telephone call. Just an unsigned customer service email from who knows. Do not think by seeing the CIGA mark you are getting a guarantee of workmanship, or peace of mind, because you are not.
