THE place to go for raptor lovers
I had a full day falconer experience at Coda falconry centre on the 20th August, and I loved it.
Coda falconry is an incredible blend of passionate staff and extremely well trained birds of prey for a truly unforgettable and treasured experience. I have been to many different raptor centres across the UK since the age of 6 years old and this is by far the closest I have ever been to a raptor. I have had experience in holding over 60 different birds of all different species at various zoo experiences and bird of prey displays and these are by far the best trained not to bite or gouge with their talons, with some of the more naturally nervous raptors such as the steppe eagle who are normally not held at displays, being of an entirely different personality at coda! I received a scratch from a raptor before, but at coda, it seemed like urie the steppe eagle was trying not to scratch me, he was an extremely gentle bird, as were all of them there. All of their birds have their own unique success stories too, having made a development from where they were, such as urie the steppe eagle and possibly some of the Harris hawks who had been mistreated or neglected in the past but were very clearly allowed and encouraged to recover by the dedicated staff at coda falconry.
Elliot was lots of fun and engaged us all with tons of facts and stories of the raptors past ventures while having a silent appreciation of the atmosphere of the audience/ experience falconer day. I am a quiet individual and rather shy, it was easy for others to push in front of me and claim a turn, but Elliot really picked up on this, so I was still able to hold the birds as much as some of the more charismatic visitors. Emily was also a lovely falconer, she was informative and clearly shared a deep connection with the birds such as Dusk, the friendly young barn owl. Sarah made her debut with urie the steppe eagle, and is definitely fond of him! Giving us all a detailed analysis of the life of a steppe eagle and how the centre works whilst keeping it relevant and interesting, something that is often missed. Finally Dave, who is a gentle soul, always there for any questions that you have, and explains the falconers knot really well! With these four expert falconers, it was truly enthusing day, I saw no glassy eyes in the audience all of the way through the day.
Over all, a wonderful experience with truly passionate falconers. I wanted to write this review so that other people can share in the beauty of this charming little falconry centre.
