The same as many others

The same as many others. It was not made clear that on passing the test you would be landed with a £40 cancellation fee. Since all learners will (hopefully) pass their test at some point unless you pass it on the anniversary of your insurance you will end up paying the fee.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

Avoid at all costs, this company use underhanded tactics to basically rip you off when telling them a young person had passed their driving test.
We took out a learner car insurance policy for our 17 year daughter and called Collingwood to advise our daughter has passed her test. We understandably were expecting some form of partial refund for only using 2/3rds of the policy term, we did expect the usual ‘admin fee’ of course (assuming this might be £10?…up to £25?)

But no….listen to this bit!, this company have the brass neck to devise a truly awful ‘back end charge’ and actually charge you EXTRA than what’s left in the value of the policy itself and proudly announce they will be taking the funds from the.card they hold on file from when you buy the policy, in the first place.

They try and justly these underhanded frees with a set of justification sentences in a follow up email….rubbish like ‘we need to maintain our website’ etc etc.

We spent a lot of time explaining we now needed a new policy for our daughter now she passed her test…and giving the operator a while load of private data, then they tell you that they shall be passing this on to third parties to allow them to quote you instead. They deliberately waste your time collecting a host of personal information when they know full well they don’t even offer an insurance policy for those who pass their driving test!!….what a devious thing to do (total rotten business practice)

Then when you expect to get a partial refund because your child has passed.their test…they deliver the news that they are going to rip you off instead.

They hide behind ‘it’s all in the terms and conditions’….and leave you feeling sucker punched.

I instantly wrote to them and told them I wish to complain….they have totally ignored my letter.

So BE CAREFUL…..this outfit will rip you off too. Use Hastings Direct learner policy instead, I dearly wish I had. They will sell you a ‘proper’ young drivers policy after the learners only policy ends and not rip your off like this dreadful company will.

Avoid avoid avoid. It’s shameful the regulator allow companies like this to pull the wool over people’s eyes (I bet they rip off 1000’s of 17 year olds desperate to be driving….)

I shall willingly update this review if my complaint is acknowledged and acted upon, but I have a very strong feeling they will continue to ignore my complaint.

Don’t be a victim too.

Updated - made an official complaint (2 as 2 separate issues), they wrote back telling me my complain was not upheld (very unsurprising!) - so insurance ombudsman next!…can’t let them get away with these practices

Poor practices for this day and age

We did the correct thing and cancelled the policy when our son passed his test, having paid the full year up front. I wasn’t expecting much money back but to be hit with a £40 cancellation fee feels like they are taking advantage of 17 year old kids. Our son worked and saved to pass his test at great expense and then to have another £40 to pay for nothing feels wrong. Trying to find the details you need from the small print of a 15000 word policy document is like going back 30 years.

Thieves

Purchased learners insurance as Daughter brought a car to learn to drive in. It was delivered the next day and broke down. Car sent back to garage and we got a full refund. Cancelled insurance policy next day. They kept £65.00 cancellation fee and didn't get the full refund. Even though within 14 days. This is learner's insurance, wouldn't recommend them to any of her friends. Waiting for manager to phone me back tomorrow. Spoke to Carol seemed ok but not happy and I've taken things further.

Collingwood Young Drivers Insurance is…

Collingwood Young Drivers Insurance is completely misleading. This policy is advertised as temporary, meant to cover learners until they pass their driving test.
The moment my son passed, we cancelled — and were hit with a £125 cancellation fee. £125 just to cancel a policy that had already served its purpose. That is outrageous.
A “temporary” policy that punishes you for cancelling after the test is nothing but a money trap. Totally unacceptable. Avoid at all costs.

Sneaky £40 cancellation fee

Cancelled the policy as per requirement when my daughter passed her test only to be hit with a £40 fee which is buried in the T&C and not mentioned at the point of cancellation, only in a subsequent email.

I should have just let the policy run out.

I will not use these guys again for my younger child.

This is clearly a business practice they're happy with as it was featured in the Guardian as long ago as 2024.
