Comet Backup was a great back-up solution, however things have taken a very, very bad turn. First in 2024 they increased their pricing aggressively, which caused us to increase our pricing as well and lost quite a few customers.

And now they announced in june 2025 that they are now part of WebPros.... Yikes! You probably know WebPros because of cPanel, WHMCS, Plesk, SolusVM and more. If you do know WebPros, than you will probably know they increased pricing of all brands/products they own under WebPros (thanks to the investment company owning it; they only care for profit).

So what will this mean for Comet Backup? Well, knowing WebPros, Comet Backup will increase it's pricing from here on and for every year! Expect the pricing for January 2026 to increase with at least 50% (or more) and for January 2027 it will increase probably by 100% knowing WebPros.

We are going to search for an alternative solution, as Comet Backup will become way to expensive. Mark my words! This is not about "if" it will happen, but when! And probably the pricing will start to increase by January 2026. And after that prices will increase every single year...

This will be the end for Comet Backup. It was a great back-up solution till 2024. Then it was simply okay, but from 2026 and onwards it will become worse and worse... It's such a shame.

We have now stopped using this extremely unreliable software. The initial trial software worked perfectly until we move to the monthly paid software. It then worked a few times then stopped. The support failed to fix the issues but after a few weeks it just started working again. We havn't been able to get it working again for the last couple of months so have given up and are now using MSP360, which works flawlessly. Comet will continue to charge even if the software doesn't work and will not cancel your account of refund balance when asked.

Initially, Comet Backup did many things right, allowing for a centrally managed and deduplicated backup system at an affordable price, billed monthly per client and feature (e.g. SQL database, Exchange server, etc.).

When they introduced image instead of file-only backups, using these would cost four times as much (compared to doing file-based backups only) per client just for the license.

Then they changed the licensing of Hyper-V to charge more per VM, which was already a steep price increase. But it was still acceptable.

In april 2024 they finally decided to start asking 99$ or 199$ per month for self-hosted Comet server licenses. These were free before which made sense since licensing was paid by client being backed up and no storage or compute resources are included. While this will not be significant for huge Comet Backup setups, it's a killer for SME hosting their own servers.

Note that up to this announcement (and even longer in different places of their documentation and FAQ) they were advertising the transparent, per-client pricing model and also the free server licenses. Thus this change has been very unexpected and it feels like a mafia method to apply such a pricing change despite promises made before about the pricing model, especially for long-term existing customers.

Based on these events, this is a company you should not trust as fair and reliable business partners.

The stunt that Comet backup have pulled by announcing that they will start charging for self-hosted server is a blatant cash grab. There is no other way to justify what they have done, plain cash grab and it is undeniable. Understand if it was $20 a month or so for self-hosted, it would have made sense but they priced it at an extortionate price. Higher than the cloud-hosted server and that's because they assume everyone will instantly see the cloud-hosted option as a "bargain" offering, which it isn't. One of the major reasons we use the self-hosted is because you can attach a local storage, obviously can't do this with the cloud-hosted.

We are now in our research stage and will be moving away from Comet Backup to another provider - Comet backup as a company can no longer be trusted. Once you pull a stunt like this, there is no guarantee they won't do it again.

I can no longer recommend them and sincerely suggest choosing someone else as a backup solution provider.

Their support is mediocre at best. Usually have to wait several hours if not days before they reply. I doubt this latest cash grab is going to drastically change their support. In fact I bet it will remain the same mediocre support.

Increasing the price of our comet server from zero to $1200 a year - what the ****

Leaves us with the choice to:
a. move to their $600 hosted option; OR
b. pay $1200 to maintain our current setup; OR
c. simply leave them

We can't be working with a company that pulls stunts like this, so will be leaving and migrating all accounts to our Veeam infrastructure

It's a shocking company. First, we got a massive increase in VM pricing, and now they're trying to rip us off for hosting their software. Well, that's not happening, I will be returning to either MSP360 or Wholesale Backup as soon as possible.

Pricing structure changed - $1200 per year just to host the server. Was previously $0.

They are trying to push everyone to their own Comet hosted server at half the price.

This is a very well conceived backup product that works flawlessly. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once configured, everything makes sense. It is highly configurable, with options for reporting, excluding files or folders, and customized retention policies. This backup product uses a server to administer the backup, and a client to configure and manage it locally. You can host your own server or use the company's online server. I am using the self-hosted server locally. The interface is very usable. You can back up locally or to Amazon S3 or other places. The backups are the fastest that I have seen, hands down. I have about 300,000 files and can back this up in a few hours (the first full backup), as opposed to a day or more from other companies. Restoring is a breeze: fast, simple, and successful. Customer service provides fast response, too. If you are serious about your backups, I would recommend this product highly. Imaging a drive incurs an extra fee, but I back up just files (no extra fees beyond the basic cost), and this approach will meet the needs of many. For self-hosting, the overall cost is reasonable. The proprietary online hosting is a bit pricey. Overall, this is a fantastic product and value. It allowed me to consolidate my approach to backup and eliminate a couple of the other products that I had been using.
