Dreadful in store advertising, poor store layout and availability.

I regularly shop at Consum in Alcossebre, primarily because, as a small town, we have limited retail options. Hopefully, a competitor will arrive soon to raise the bar.

For context, I worked as a senior executive at one of the world’s largest supermarket chains for over a decade and have also run a successful marketing agency for more than 20 years, so I approach this as both a consumer and someone with deep industry knowledge.

I have three key concerns:

1. In-Store Advertising

The frequency and tone of the in-store announcements are, frankly, maddening. Messages are broadcast every 15 seconds in an overly chirpy, sing-song voice that feels more suited to a children’s cartoon than a supermarket. The repeated slogan “Juntos es cooperativa”, alternating with “Junts és cooperativa” (perhaps due to regional language policies in the Valencian Community), is relentless. It’s so intrusive that I now wear noise-cancelling earphones just to get through my shop in peace. This kind of sensory overload creates an uncomfortable environment and detracts from the shopping experience.

2. Store Layout Post-Refurbishment

The store recently underwent a refurbishment—something I’m very familiar with professionally. As part of the changes, security gates were installed on one side of the store, forcing all customer entry through the left-hand entrance. Unfortunately, this is exactly where the frozen food section is located—traditionally one of the last areas shoppers visit. Meanwhile, the water, wine, and soft drinks—heavier items typically selected first—are on the opposite side. This layout forces customers to cross behind the checkout lanes with full trolleys, creating unnecessary congestion, especially during busy periods. It’s a classic case of a poorly planned customer flow that could easily have been avoided.

3. Poor Bocadillo Availability

The lack of availability of bocadillos is astonishing. Without exaggeration, four out of five times I visit, there are none available. This isn’t a complex forecasting challenge—there are well-established models for managing production in in-store bakeries based on time of day and footfall patterns. It suggests a lack of basic stock management or oversight that could be resolved with relatively minimal operational changes.

In summary, the shopping experience at Consum Alcossebre feels increasingly out of touch with both customer expectations and basic retail principles. I hope this feedback is taken constructively—there is real opportunity here to improve both customer satisfaction and store performance.

If you want rotten peppers

If you want rotten peppers, moldy avocados, and squashed cucumber then this is the online store for you.

All delivered later by a driver with no map and a love for swearing then this is the online shop for you.

I have emailed customer services but they don't seem to actually care.

Above Average

Very good, prices reasonable and choice of products good. Fresh produce better than average. Loyalty Card is a bonus.
