They gave up on the consumer!

wants personal info that can be exploited from there data breaches. they don't care about the consumer as long as they get there $. Even after this backlash all they say is don't worry it won't affect that many people. Kinda glad there taking the hit with so many people turning off there subs or switching apps. people are done with company's trying to screw them.

Do NOT use this anymore

Do NOT use this anymore. Discord will very soon be harvesting your data under the flimsy pretense of 'protecting kids', which is a loose way of saying allowing AI to scrape your data, your ID, your photos etc.
They have previously had a massive security breach which involved 70,000 + compromised accounts and simply cannot be trusted.
This is a shame because Discord was once a brilliant app, once again ruined by greedy CEO's and shareholders who value their own profits over their own customers.

Unless Discord considers a U-turn on this decision, then I highly suggest finding an alternative.

Horribly invasive and priced awful

Demanding facial recognition or IDs to gatekeep essential features all while leaking +70k individual users data just months prior is ridiculous. It also gatekeeps normal features behind a $10 paywall like themes and other stock standard chat client features; Nitro is a scam.

AI Training

Discord is currently trying to make everyone upload either a facial photo/video or a government issued ID in what appears to be an attempt to train AI. This is problematic and will result in the loss of many users. After recent data breaches, Discord has proven to be untrustworthy with such information, and is just ASKING to have larger breaches. I personally refuse to do this and advise that anyone else refuse to do so as well.

ID Check or Face Scan

Requiring a gov id or face scan to access content on the platform WILL eventually lead to requiring it to access the platform entirely, Facebook has already put this in place and other companies WILL follow if allowed to do so

The Worst Idea Yet

Deciding this is an absolute mistake. Age verification is not a good idea, especially if our likeness will be used to train AI. As far as I'm concerned Discord are shooting themselves in the foot, as is anyone endorsing this. No AI. Ever. If you truly want to protect younger audiences, start in the home.

Gets hacked, asks for more data

Gets hacked, millions of accounts information is leaked. Instead of increasing security and making efforts to prevent that announces that now unless you give even more sensitive information to them you will be an incredibly restricted account. Yes, let me give even more sensitive information to the people who only a few months ago had all the sensitive information they already had get leaked cause that's a smart decision.

Their new policy to require pictures of…

Their new policy to require pictures of government identification is a huge security risk...they have already had a security leak making over +70,000 people at risk for identity theft for adding this in the first place last year....I will not ever add my id and will be looking for a new platform for community in the comming weeks and will leave as soon as I find an even half competent competitor.

Privacy theater meets policy worship

Discord’s priorities are a marvel of modern tech thinking.

First, the new age verification policy: demanding sensitive personal data just to keep using a chat app. Hand over your ID, trust us completely — even though the platform has a long track record of fumbling basic account security. Comforting.

Now to the real highlight. When my account was compromised, Discord support refused to change the associated email address. Not because it was secure. Not because I still had access to it. But because of “policy.”
The email address in question? No longer active. Completely inaccessible. Gone.

This inspired decision meant the hacker could continue using my account to send malicious messages while I, the actual account owner, was locked out of meaningful recovery. Apparently, an inactive email address is a perfectly acceptable security anchor, as long as it ticks a box in Discord’s internal rulebook.

Support was exactly what you’d expect: copy-pasted replies, zero urgency, and a total unwillingness to apply common sense while active abuse was happening on their platform. The message was clear — preventing harm matters less than not deviating from the script.

So let me get this straight: Discord wants my government ID to verify my age, but refuses to update an inactive email address on a hacked account that’s actively being abused. That’s not safety. That’s bureaucracy cosplay.

If you’re looking for a platform that treats policies as sacred, users as disposable, and hackers as long-term tenants — Discord has absolutely nailed it.
