Absolutely Appalling – Unsafe, Filthy, and Uninhabitable Accommodation
I booked a stay at Royal Discovery Whitby through Booking.com for 11th–13th April.
We arrived at 15:30 on the 11th, but due to the utterly disgraceful and unsafe condition of the property, we were forced to vacate by 09:00 the next morning.
The property was in a shocking state:
No fire safety equipment – no fire extinguisher, no fire blanket, a serious safety concern.
Illegal electrics throughout the property, will be making the local council and HSE aware of this property.
Human faeces stains on the living room sofa.
Rat droppings, especially under the kitchen sink.
A filthy kitchen – oven and hob covered in grease, leftover food in the grill, clearly not cleaned in months.
Blood on the bedroom wall, white unknown substance on vanity table.
Walls and floors were heavily stained; playdough and food ground into the carpet.
Pubic hair, mould and general filth in the bathrooms.
Graffiti and burns in the living room beams.
General dirt, grime, and food debris throughout the property.
We were assured by Discovery Properties that a cleaner would attend by 17:00. When we returned at 20:30, nothing had been resolved. Travelling with an autistic child, we had no safe alternative that night and had to stay one night under protest.
Customer service offered a complaint form but said it could take up to 28 days to respond – an unacceptable timeframe given the severity of the conditions and no alternative clean accommodation available in any of their local properties.
Booking.com advised we leave and file a complaint – which we did. I’ve submitted photographic and video evidence to them and now the property aren’t responding to Booking.
Do not book with this company!
