Eda Frandsen Voyage

Our voyage aboard the Eda Frandsen was exactly what we envisioned it to be. An intimate and hands-on sailing experience in a historic and well-tended sailing vessel under the careful and delicious watch of Mungo and Stella. We were in expert hands at every level. The weather, the wind and the seas are essential players in this experience, and yield new discoveries, anchorages, and seemingly unlimited natural beauty. We are novice sailors but felt comfortable and welcome to do as much as we could and learned much in the process. Thank you Eda Frandsen!

6 days sailing the Inner Hebrides

I arrived in Mallaig by rail on my own not knowing what to expect. From the moment I got on board I felt welcomed and quickly settled in. Mungo and Stella are consummate hosts and professional sailors and we quickly became part of the crew with a respect for the weather and the sea.
Stella’s cooking is amazing, providing a steady flow of nutritious meals from the small galley kitchen. Evenings were spent getting to know the rest of the guests providing a very convivial atmosphere. During the day there were plenty of opportunities to take in the beauty of the Scottish Highlands at sea and on land. We saw dolphins and even a sea eagle, puffins and plenty of sea birds.
It’s an experience I will never forget.

Join Eda Frandsen for the trip of a lifetime!
You don’t need to be an experienced sailor to enjoy sailing with Mungo and Stella, who have the expertise to show you the ropes.
The boat sails in The South of England from Falmouth and in Scotland from Mallaig to the inner and outer Hebrides.
We have been fortunate enough to have sailed in both locations and the experience is exiting yet safe, exhilarating and yet so very peaceful.
We love the delicious and healthy food that Stella prepares from scratch, and to such a high standard.
I can’t wait for our next trip. I would heartily recommend it to others.

World Class Tourism

Don't hesitate to book with Eda Frandsen Sailing as this is genuinely a world class, small and intimate tourist experience, seeing the best of Scotland's west coast scenery from the sea with excursions onshore. Mungo and Stella make the whole trip super special by being skilled, friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. We had sunny weather, excellent food and great company as we travelled from Mallaig to Knoydart, Rum, Canna, Muck, Loch Moidart and Eileen Shona. I will always remember that glittering sea full of guillemots and shearwaters, not forgetting the awesome dolphin displays. Fabulous!

If you’re wondering about booking a trip, just do it. You will have the most amazing time. Prepare to meet lovely people, see dolphins, whales, sea eagles and seals in abundance.
Stella and Mungo are incredibly knowledgeable about the area and it’s history which truly enriches the journey. They are great hosts, the meals Stella produced were awesome, I returned home rather like an overstuffed sofa.
Two of us on this trip were females travelling independently, just in case anyone is wondering…..
Did I mention the dolphins? they take your breath away, book and enjoy, feeling a little envious.

I came away refreshed and happier than I’ve been in years after 10 days on the Eda Frandsen.

From the moment the trip was booked, Eda Frandsen as a company were warm and welcoming.
The boat is beautiful and obviously well loved by her owners with incredible attention to detail.
The hospitality was incredible. Mungo, Stella and Amy were charming, educational, attentive and accommodating.
Wow, the food. How Stella produced fresh bread, cakes, roasts, sweets in that tiny galley for 11 of us and catered for different tastes and needs, I will never know. The meals and snacks were truly top notch; and I like my food.
The few made it the most relaxed holiday I have ever been on. It was stressed that one could be as involved with the sailing as you wanted or just to chill, relax and sleep.
I am new to sailing and very much appreciated the constant thought and effort that went into every days planning and sailing to give us the best possible experience whatever the weather.
I came away refreshed and happier than I’ve been in years after 10 days on the Eda Frandsen.

A Wonderful Adventure Aboard Eda Frandsen

We have just completed a West Coast of Scotland Isle adventure on board Eda Frandsen with Mungo and Stella. This was our first trip aboard Eda, and our first time on a traditional gaff cutter and have nothing but praise from start to finish.

We have limited sailing knowledge so it was great to learn the ropes from both Mungo and Stella who are more than competent when sailing this classic wooden boat in all weather conditions, and we felt completely at ease, safe and comfortable at all times.

Plans were made and adapted depending on weather conditions and we were taking ashore at every opportunity to explore remote Islands and anchorages visiting a few local bars on the way.

During our trip we saw all sorts of wildlife including Dolphins, Eagles, seals, Puffins and Red Deer.

You can choose to help as much or little as you choose. We got involved and it was very rewarding and, in our opinion, made the trip extra special.

The meals onboard were delicious and lovingly prepared by Sella in the small but adequate galley with more than enough to go around and excellent variety.

We would recommend Eda Frandsen, Mungo and Stella to anyone who want a unique way to visit some of the remotest parts of Scotland by sea.

Eda: simply the best

Whether you are an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, don't hesitate to book a voyage on Eda. Mungo and Stella skillfully cater for all. The calm way in which the boat is handled with attention to safety and the fantastic food produced by Stella from the confines of the galley will make your trip unforgettable whether you are in Cornwall or Scotland. My recent trip in the Inner Hebrides gave us great sailing, beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife (including dolphins riding the bow wave), a magical visit to Fingal's Cave and close-up views of a puffin colony. Oh, did I mention the food? I have been on a number of tall ship charter voyages and Eda is still the best.

Fantastic Adventure

Had an amazing adventure aboard the Eda Frandsen for nine days. Each day was planned out by Mungo, the owner and changed if weather was not suitable on the day to give us the best available conditions. The food, provided and cooked on board, by Stella was absolutely fabulous. We would definitely book another adventure with Mungo and Stella.

Eda- the One and Only

We had sailed on Eda some eight times in the past with her previous owners and, after several years, felt it was now time to try her again. I will confess to some apprehension as we have cherished memories of Eda as we knew and loved her.
We need not have worried. Stella and Mungo have stayed true to the spirit of this classic boat, while making big improvements, especially to the new forward head and bathroom. She looks immaculate; loved and well cared for. Mungo has been fastidious in carrying out work that exceeds the coding requirements and it shows. She sails better than ever. Stella and Mungo, ably assisted by Amy, bring a wealth of sailing knowledge and experience in hospitality afloat. Stella works exceptionally hard to provide some of the best food we have enjoyed anywhere- let alone at sea, prepared in a galley the size of a phone box.
Everyone is made to feel welcome. The cabins are dry and cosy and good deck and safety gear is provided. We had a mix of experience levels in our group and everybody had a fantastic time, from newbies to old salts. All agreed that the calm and controlled manner in which the crew work the deck adds to the confidence that this is a safe, well run operation that makes the most of Eda's classic sailing attributes and provides an experience that is true to the history of this very special boat. Long Live Eda! We will return.

One of my best experience by far!

I recently had the pleasure of taking a sailing trip with Eda Frandsen and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience. From start to finish, the trip was well-planned, expertly executed, and exceeded all of my expectations. If safety is a concern for you (I know it was for me), you are probably the safest with this incredibly knowledgeable and experienced crew. I felt right at home from the first day. The food on board was also exceptional. We were treated to a delicious lunch/dinner and refreshments throughout the trip! Met some very interesting people and definitely made a few core memories onboard. I cannot recommend Eda enough to anyone looking for a sailing experience. They are worth it and take care of you throughout the trip!

Sailing Back in Time

Now that we have had ample time to process our wonderful sailing experience aboard Eda Frandsen, it is time to share our thoughts by putting them down in writing.

Looking to relive our early sailing years and also tour a few Scottish distilleries, our google search directed us to Eda’s website. After seeing her pictures, we immediately fell in love with this beautiful ship. She brought to our minds fond memories of our own gaff-rigged cutter that we lived and cruised aboard almost half a century ago. And so it began… another adventure on the sea, but for 9 days instead of 6 years.

Our passage trip from Oban to Falmouth exceeded all of our expectations. Eda Frandsen’s beginnings as a reliable seagoing vessel add to her character and infuse confidence…she has a big personality, she is beautiful, salty, and sturdy… seeing Eda in person for the first time we had full faith in her seaworthiness.

Once on board, Mungo and Stella, along with crew member Mo, welcomed us and the other six guests with open arms. As our merry band of adventurers began our 9 day voyage across the Irish Sea, we were thrilled to be in most excellent company! We truly enjoyed our overnight stays in secluded Scottish anchorages, our Jura distillery tour, standing watches on overnight passages, hoisting sails (thanks to Mo for teaching us the ropes), an Irish stopover in Dun Laoghaire, and the beauty of Cornwall’s coast.

Mungo and Stella are both well-seasoned sailors, with intimate knowledge of Eda and her abilities on the water. Their expert local knowledge and historic tidbits were an added bonus for all of us. It was always instructive to listen as Mungo explained the currents and tides and quirks of sailing the Irish Sea. Mungo is an experienced captain that instilled confidence in us with every decision he made.

Stella truly outdid herself in the galley, satisfying everyone, even those with dietary preferences. In calm or rough seas, it was 5 star gourmet all the way, prepared with love, care and deliciousness. And Stella’s sailing and navigation skills are not hidden behind her cooking abilities!

A million thanks for a fantastic voyage and for reminding us what it’s like to be young again. Looking forward to our next Eda adventure…let’s have a reunion! Fire in the Hole!

Cornish delight on Eda Frandsen

Just finished a wonderful three nights sail out of Falmouth. Mother Nature decided we would either have no wind or too much wind but we still had a great time. The boat is cosy and comfortable and, being wooden and sturdy, amazingly quiet and peaceful at night. Guests were able to pitch in on deck (I was very keen to do this) or sit back and enjoy the ride. Mungo and Stella are vastly experienced and competent sailors, but also delightful hosts. And Stella's cooking was amazing! The choice of wine and spirits was excellent

Eda Frandsen Revisited After 6 Years

I have just come back from a 9 day trip sailing from Mallaig out to the Outer Hebrides. Having had two excellent experiences sailing on Eda a few years ago I was confident the experience would be good this time as well. My only concern was whether the new owners would be able to live up to the previous ones. I am happy to report that they do! Of course they are different people and personalities but the same approach to providing an excellent sailing experience in beautiful but sometimes challenging conditions and encouraging all guests to participate in the boat handling is just as good. I will be back no doubt.

A lifetime of memories

I have just come back from a 9 day sail with Mungo & Stella onboard the beautiful Eda Frandsen.

From the moment you step onto Eda you are made to feel welcome and at ease. Mungo & Stella are both experienced sailors and at all times the boat feels a safe place to be in all weathers. They are supported by their deckhand Mo who brings great energy and a smile at all times and is a natural teacher when showing you the key skills to sailing Eda.

There were too many highlights to mention from my trip but a special mention for the standard of food that Stella prepares in the galley. A great variety of dishes all to a superb standard will make you glad you packed elasticated trousers!

This was my first trip on Eda and I’m sure it won’t be my last.

Sail in the Hebrides… feed your soul!

I have just returned from a nine night voyage with Mungo, Stella and their deckhand, Mo sailing in the Hebrides.

We ‘enjoyed’ mixed weather. It was rather cool for the time of year but we saw lots of blue skies which always helps to lift the spirits. The weather did NOT play the game and proved sufficiently challenging at times to cause changes of plan which then meant we visited places we might not otherwise have done… so there were new adventures to be had. Mungo and his crew were keen to take into account the guests’ wishes as far as was practicable given the constraints the weather imposed. I had every confidence in the abilities and competence of the crew and was impressed by the extent of their local knowledge.

The boat feels solid and comfortable and amazingly quiet… it seems to absorb sounds. I slept really well in my cosy bunk having eaten Stella’s fantastic offerings day after day from the teeny galley. The menu was varied, imaginative, expertly prepared and presented using fresh ingredients sourced locally. Portions were very generous. The food was certainly a highlight for me and I enjoyed everything Stella offered.

The facilities on board were also generous… 2 separate ‘heads’ provided for the 8 passengers one of which was newly created and very spacious. Perhaps a hook or two would be useful additions?

Sitting out on deck in all the ‘weather’ that was thrown at us, I felt completely at ease and at one with the world, the ocean, the boat. The dramatic scenery of the mountains and lochs drifted by, constantly altering in the ever-changing light conditions… an absolute joy.

There was space enough to be alone, if one felt the need for solitude.

If you need to feed your soul then you could do no better than spend time on Eda Frandsen

A nine day voyage aboard Eda Frandsen

I have just returned from a 9 night Western Isle adventure on board Eda Frandsen with skipper Mungo and his crew of Stella and Mo. This was my fourth voyage aboard Eda, my first under this new ownership. I felt completely at ease with the crew and at all times safe and comfortable on board.
At all times I had confidence in the boat and all of the crew who continually demonstrated their competence in handling Eda and application of their considerable seaman/womanship(!)
The voyage was limited by weather as to where we could sail to and the amount of sailing we could do. This is where good and less good charter boats demonstrate their differences. Mungo and Stella were able to apply their considerable local knowledge of the area to nonetheless provide us with a 9 day voyage of safe cruising and sustained interest. We were fortunate to sail and motor to less visited small coves, bays, Lochs, passages and treated to mountain vistas rarely seen by others. We were taken ashore in the tender at every opportunity to explore, visit pubs etc. The skipper and crew work incredibly hard the whole time, below and on deck, too hard at times I thought and I would have willingly done a little more to give them a break in the galley, on the helm or on the ropes but my conveniently bad back did hinder me just a tad! I am quite certain had I spoken up I could have done much more. The food is prepared with fresh, locally sourced products and I can confirm all the deservedly flattering comments already mentioned even if perhaps food of this quality is not high on my list of priorities. Since my last voyage on Eda one of the two heads on board has been moved forward to provide a very large and comfortable facility to perform ones ablutions, having two heads is an enormous advantage over boats with just one for a given number of guests and crew. The sleeping arrangements are favorably comparable to boats of this size and vintage, I slept very well but one should always study the below deck plans on any boat one is considering sailing on.
Another, seldom mentioned, very favorable characteristic of Eda Frandsen in my view, is the fact that the crew "enjoy" separate very modest private accommadation at the stern and rightly not for guests to visit. We as guests also benefit from this as it gives the crew the opportunity to relax just a little at the end of the evening and not be on call for general entertainment 24/7 but are available in emergency etc. The crew appear next day at breakfast refreshed, motivated and pleased to see us before presenting a well thought out plan for the days sailing and discussions which guests are encouraged to participate in.
Eda is the fourth classic boat I have been privileged to experience and enjoy and one of only two I would step aboard again which I intend to do.
I would unhesitatingly recommend Eda Frandsen under the present owners and crew to experienced and novice sailors who wish to have a safe and interesting voyage.

Wonderful boat, wonderful scenery and even more wonderful food!

Stella, Mungo (and their deckhand Mo) provided an amazing holiday for my sister and I. We sailed around the east side of Skye and saw the amazing Lochs Nevis, Hourn, Carron and Torridon as well as some little anchorages that were new to me - the scenery of course was stunning and Mungo ensured that even with very mixed weather, we managed to get to a wide variety of places with time ashore.

The boat itself is a lovely classic boat that has been adapted to provide all (reasonable) comforts and Stella's cooking is simply beyond words - how she provides such delicious, locally-sourced and freshly cooked food for up to 8 guests and 3 crew is simply a miracle.

This is not a 'testing' sailing holiday and if you want to relax and do nothing except look at the scenery, Stella and Mungo seem perfectly happy to do everything, though all you have to do is ask to take the helm or volunteer to hoist lines and away you go.

If you want to experience the best of the West Coast of Scotland in comfort on a classic boat, then this is THE holiday for you. Highly recommended.
