I had a very frustrating experience with Europcar in Cancun.
I booked my rental through Priceline and was quoted one price. Before arriving, I even called to confirm the deposit amount. However, when I got to the Europcar counter in Cancun, both the rental price and the deposit were completely different. After some back and forth, they adjusted it and I ended up paying a lower rental rate with a reasonable deposit, which I appreciated—but that was just the beginning.
When I returned the car, they claimed that one of the wheel caps was damaged or missing. This made no sense because when I received the car, two of the caps on the left side were secured with zip ties, while the ones on the right side were not. It was clearly inconsistent from the start. Despite this, they charged me nearly 2000 pesos for a cheap plastic cap that is nowhere near worth that amount.
What upset me the most was the misleading information about the insurance. At pickup, I was told I had full coverage and that I wouldn’t need to worry about anything—whether I hit something or someone hit me, I was supposedly 100% covered. But when the issue came up, they said the insurance only covered certain types of damage and did not include things like tires or related parts. That was never clearly explained.
Overall, the lack of transparency, inconsistent information, and unexpected charges made this a very disappointing experience. I would not recommend renting from this location unless you are extremely careful and document everything in detail before leaving the lot.

I rented a car from Europcar at Mexicali central. We went San Felipe where we discovered the headlight high beams were inoperable. After letting the office know, Eduardo the service manager drove another car down from Mexicali that night to replace the original car. Above and beyond service! We extended the rental another 5 days there was no problem and we were charged our original rate. I would definitely rent a car again from the car rental agency, very satisfied.

When returning the car they rely on you beeing unnder time pressure to catch your flight, go purposely slow on their processing and find imaginary scratches for which they then ask first for cash payment and then on top to fill in insurance forms. In my opinion it should at least be one or the other. All together a very dissapointing experience specially after having hired Europecar in EU. I shall not use them again and definitely fo not recommend them.

We booked a rental car for the Christmas holiday period from 24 December to 8 January via the Enjoy Travel platform. The reservation was made online on 18 November, with a 30% down payment, as required during the booking process.
Upon arrival at the Europcar Cancun Airport office after a long-haul international flight, we were forced to wait more than two hours, until approximately 11:00 p.m., to be assisted. After this excessive wait, we were in-formed that no vehicle was available, allegedly because the full rental amount had not been paid in advance. This requirement was never clearly communicated during the booking process.
After a lengthy and frustrating discussion, we were left with no choice but to abandon the reservation. As a direct consequence, we were unable to carry out our planned travel itinerary for the entire two-week Christmas holiday.
What made this experience even more unacceptable was the complete lack of customer care. Europcar did not offer any alternative solution, replacement vehicle, or even transportation to our accommodation, which was located far from the airport. The behavior of the staff and the manager, Ulizes Gabriel Jaimes Ramires, was unprofessional, unfriendly, and dismissive. When we expressed our justified frustration, we were effectively pushed out of the rental office, rather than being assisted.
This experience was deeply disappointing and fell far below any reasonable standard of customer service. We strongly advise against renting a car from Europcar Cancun, as the company demonstrated poor communica-tion, lack of accountability, and unacceptable treatment of customers.
By contrast, we rented after new years a vehicle from SIXT, where we experienced excellent service and pro-fessionalism, exactly as one should expect from an international car rental company.
Europcar Cancun has significant room for improvement, and based on our experience, we will never rent from this company again.

Made a reservation online Dec. 21 got there on time when arrived he said they didn't have the vehicle I reserved so that he couldn't do anything else they could only refund me the money is January 9 still no refund

This rental involved forced upselling and unauthorized, trumped up post-rental charges.
The total extra fees charged by Europcar are 400% more than the original cost of renting the vehicle.
Despite having prepaid insurance clearly stated on my Auto Europe voucher, Europcar staff at Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Airport refused to release the car unless I bought additional insurance. I contacted the broker from the counter, but the issue was not resolved, and I was forced to pay under protest.
At return, the car was initially accepted. After I declined to provide a cash tip, I was suddenly told the car was “excessively dirty,” without being shown any evidence.
I was denied a close-out report, and later my card was charged even more than the stated amount with no
explanation.
Auto Europe acknowledged my complaint and is investigating, which I appreciate. I am still awaiting full resolution.

Like everyone else, I was scammed to buy additional insurance coverage, which doubled the price of the rental. This was not disclosed during the booking and I only found out when I was standing at the counter with no other options. Stay away if you have other options.

This company commits fraud, or at the very least is deceptive (especially with insurance). They outright lied to me.
In addition the car they rented us was not clean and the rear view mirror fell off the windshield.
They are a mess and scammers. Go somewhere else!

Horrible. Had a prepaid reservation with them, was shuttled from the airport to their office only to tell me that the pickup time for the reservation was 1 hour later. Showed up half hour after the reservation and said it was too late to pick up and my prepaid reservation for 4 days was “too late” and they could not rent the car to me anymore. Don’t do business with this people or at least do not prepay. They will find a way not honor your reservation and not refund you.

We had heard and read some horror stories about renting a car in Mexico and were apprehensive about the prospect of being ripped off. Our dealing with Europcar was excellent from the start to finish. The booking was easy, the pick up was literally across the street from the ferry terminal in Cancun, the car was no issues and we dropped it off at Merida Airport and that was easy. All the staff we dealt with were polite and answered any question we asked.

I made a reservation- prepaid with my debit Visa card over the phone but when I showed up to pick up the car they explained I could not use the debit card and needed a credit card. I had to walk away without the rental car however I was shocked to see my bank account had been charged for the entire four days I was supposed to rent the car, without any kind of reimbursement AND they used the same debit card to charge me despite saying I was not allowed to use that card to rent the car. THIS IS A SCAM. I have been calling and emailing them without success hoping they would reimburse me. They should have cancelled right away. I did not cancel the reservation, they turned me away. Please please do not use this rental company. I tried booking this in Cuernavaca Morelos.

⭐ 1 Star – Avoid Europcar Puerto Vallarta at All Costs – Predatory Practices
I had a terrible experience with Europcar Puerto Vallarta that felt like a bait-and-switch scam. I reserved a rental that clearly included third-party liability insurance and came prepared with multiple layers of coverage:
• My American Express Platinum card (with CDW coverage),
• Allianz Global Rental Car Insurance,
• and my personal auto insurance.
Despite this, Europcar flatly denied all outside insurance and tried to strong-arm me into paying an additional $480 USD — that’s $120 per day — for their “mandatory” insurance. When I questioned this, they refused to release the car unless I paid the full extra amount, leaving me stranded.
Fortunately, I walked over to another rental agency, where they honored the original quote ($160 for 4 days) and accepted my secondary insurance without any issue. They even commented that Europcar is known for ripping off tourists.
Not only did I lose two hours of my vacation, but I was left deeply frustrated and appalled by Europcar’s unethical behavior. This is nothing short of extortion.
Bottom line: Avoid Europcar Puerto Vallarta unless you enjoy being scammed, delayed, and disrespected

I rented a car via EconomyBookings from Europcar, with pickup at Cancun Airport. During the booking, I chose the “Full Protection” insurance package and paid a total of 80 CAD for 5 days. The booking clearly stated that no extra payment would be required at the counter, and that no high deposit would be charged.
However, upon arrival at the Europcar counter in Cancun, I was told that the Full Protection insurance did not include CDW (Collision Damage Waiver). I was forced to either pay an extra $200 USD for CDW or leave a $5,000 USD deposit. This was a shocking and unacceptable demand, especially given that most travelers don’t have such high credit limits. I had no choice but to pay under pressure and fatigue after a 10-hour flight with my family.
To make things worse, the Europcar representative barely spoke English, which made communication extremely difficult. I was embarrassed and stressed in front of my family, and this ruined the very beginning of our vacation. This is clearly a misleading and aggressive upselling tactic, and an exploitation of tired travelers in a vulnerable moment.
It's unacceptable that Europcar Mexico invalidates third-party insurance just to force customers to pay extra. I have since learned that many other customers have experienced similar treatment at this location. Europcar should be held accountable for this kind of dishonest behavior. I demand a full refund of the $200 USD and a formal apology.

Warning: Avoid Europcar/Fox Rent a Car!
My experience with them have not been the greatest. After all paperwork they left me waiting a very long time to give me the a car that soon after was not working for me. I appreciate the cleaning and washing of the car but as I already had a reservation done, I would hope my car would be ready almost immediately. I rented an SUV (Chevrolet Captiva), and just a few hours into the rental, the car wouldn’t drive baby steep hills, I had already filled the tank with over $1,200 pesos of gas because it was given to me with less than half a tank. I called for assistance and was told to return the car, but they didn’t have a similar SUV available — they gave me a smaller car (Volkswagen Virtus) instead.
Not only did they not refund the difference in rental cost, but the replacement car came did not come in a full tank of gas as I had asked because I had just pumped gas — and they still charged me a second $10,000 peso deposit.
To make matters worse, it’s been more than 72 hours and I’ve only received one deposit back. The original deposit for the SUV is still missing, even though employees assured me both would be returned.
Be careful with this company — they are disorganized, unreliable, and quick to take your money but not return it. I do not recommend renting from them!
Scammed and never been contacted back. Our case was closed without any issues. A week later, we received a charge of €107 with no justification. We are still waiting for the invoice of our reservation. Despite my follow-ups, Europcar has not responded to us. Do not choose Europcar.
Great! You have answered to my Trust pilot review . I sent you several emails and didn’t receive any feedback yet!

Scammed by Europcar Mexico – Hidden Charges, Lies About Deposits, and No Accountability
I’ve been visiting Mexico for nearly 20 years and regularly rent cars during my stays. I know how the system works and am always careful — yet Europcar Mexico still managed to deceive me with one of the most common and dishonest scams in the industry.
At pickup, I informed the Europcar agent that I had already purchased the legally required third-party liability insurance through EconomyBookings.com. Despite this, the agent claimed they were giving me a “cheaper deposit” than the standard $1,200 hold — a move that turned out to be a complete lie. What they actually did was charge me over $400 in unnecessary insurances I never agreed to.
The contract was in Spanish (which I don’t speak fluently), and I was not provided any clear breakdown in English of what I was signing. At return, the car was in perfect condition with a full tank, and I was again told I was signing to release my deposit. But no deposit was released — instead, my card was charged again, including a mysterious fee. All of this occurred without proper disclosure, consent, or authorization.
I tried to resolve the issue with Europcar directly, but they repeatedly ignored my messages. This is a pattern, not an isolated experience. Hundreds of others have shared similar stories of deception and unauthorized charges — see the reviews at Trustpilot
⚖️ Relevant Consumer Protection Laws:
Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Law (Ley Federal de Protección al Consumidor) – Requires full and transparent disclosure of service terms and pricing, and mandates that foreign consumers not be misled due to language barriers.
U.S. Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) – Protects cardholders from unauthorized or deceptive billing practices and allows for formal disputes.
Visa & Mastercard Chargeback Rules – State that a signed receipt does not constitute valid authorization if the terms were misrepresented or not clearly explained.
I urge others to stay far away from Europcar Mexico, and if you’ve experienced something similar:
✅ Dispute the charge with your credit card provider
✅ Report them to PROFECO (Mexico’s Consumer Protection Agency)
✅ Submit complaints to the FTC (U.S.) if you're an American consumer
✅ Leave your own reviews to warn others
Let’s hold them accountable for targeting travelers with shady tactics. This type of exploitation should not be allowed to continue.

I was charged a deposit and told I would get it refunded 24hrs after my rental returned. Its been over a week and Europcar supervisor has since refused my whatsapp communication. They also said they would email me a detailed receipt and have yet to receive it for business purposes. Also, I extended my car rental one day and was billed $150 dollars for a one day fee which was double the amount of a daily fee.

Avoid!! We rented a car online but when we arrived, the team wanted us to paid 500USD for an insurance (so 10x initial offer price), even we were already insured by our bank and by an international civil insurance.
We had to negotiate during at least one hour. They finally accept but at the end, they asked for a deposit of 14 000 USD, which was of course impossible with my credit card.
But, they refused to reimburse what we already paid on internet…
In conclusion, they tried everything to make us pay their very expensive insurance. The renderer and the manager were very unpleasant.
(P.S: also, the rented car was a Volkswagen but they offered us a Kia…)
