Never again

On Friday 20th March I picked up the vehicle I had reserved at the Europcar office at Arlanda airport.
The experience was dreadful as Petrine was the only one at the desk and was incompetently slow at serving, did not acknowledge waiting customers nor call for assistance from your other staff. There was just one customer in front of me, yet I was there for at least half an hour waiting to be served by her. Hertz processed four customers at the same time. Rani wandered between the front desk and back office during that time but made no effort to serve me despite seeing customers waiting.
I provided my payment card for the deposit hold and subsequently found to my surprise that the £803 was taken from my account rather than held and I was charged a £24.02 currency exchange fee. In the decades that I have been a Europcar customer, and of other rental companies, I have always had the deposit on hold, never payment taken.
On returning the car I queried this with the assistant who informed us that their terms and conditions had changed in that Europcar now take payment from their customers for the security deposit rather than putting the amount on hold. Nowhere is this mentioned in their T&Cs (attached). On their website they explicitly state “When you arrive at the rental location, you will be asked to leave a deposit for your rental. The deposit amount will be blocked (not debited) on your payment card at pick-up time…”.
This is not acceptable, least of all the fact that I have been charged a foreign currency exchange fee and gone overdrawn on my account.
Three days later, the sum has not been refunded.
I will never rent from Europcar again after this experience.

At first they were very accommodating

At first they were very accommodating. I needed a 4x4 with studded tires as I was traveling with my family to northern Sweden. Upon pickup, very little information about the rental contract was provided. The said they would email the contract. I pointed out there was a chip in the paint on the rear of the vehicle. They told me it was too small to document. I dropped my car back off at the original destination in Stockholm center. A day later I get 2 emails labeled damage report. One was for the chip they refused to document and the other damage report was for cleaning of the vehicle. There’s no information in the contract about a cleaning fee. I emailed them to dispute the charges and have yet to receive a response. According to other reviews, it seems like this is an ongoing trend with this rental company.

Broken Promises and Poor Customer Care

I rented a car from Europcar Landvetter and initially thought the service was good. However, the car was not fully fueled when I picked it up. I was promised a refund for the airport fee as compensation, and I provided all requested details immediately. Despite repeated follow-ups for over a month and multiple assurances that the refund would be processed, nothing happened.
The lack of communication and failure to honor commitments is unacceptable. This experience has completely overshadowed any positive aspects of the rental. I will not use Europcar Landvetter again and strongly advise others to think twice before booking here.

Europcar at Arlanda Airport - AVOID

Europcar at Arlanda airport should be AVOIDED if at all possible. Regardless of where in the country you are driving they charge you a fee to cover congestion charge for Stockholm - EVERY DAY of your rental !!
I got hit with over 1,000kr bill (just under £100) extra after I had returned the car.
There was NO mentioning of this when I picked up the car. I was driving north in Sweden so not even close to any congestion charge. This is a such a scam, even if it's within the law since you can find it buried in the small print.... None of the other car hires I've used at Arlanda has this extra - and very hidden - cost added.
I will definately never use Europcar in Sweden again.

Bad Service and Insane Charges

Unjustified Charge & Poor Service at Europcar Lund

I had a frustrating experience with Europcar Lund. Upon pickup, I was informed of an undisclosed excess fee of up to 2,500 SEK, despite purchasing full damage protection. The car was not properly cleaned and had pre-existing scratches, which the agent refused to document.

After returning the car in good condition and notifying the rental station, I was later accused of causing a minor scratch (under 1 cm) that was not visible in my return video. Despite raising concerns and revisiting the station to clarify, my credit card was charged the full excess without warning.

Poor communication, refusal to acknowledge pre-existing damage, and an unjustified charge make this experience deeply disappointing.

Eurupcar in Malmö

Eurupcar in Malmö has neglected their own damage report and the photo evidence on already existing damages. They charged my credit card 12.000 SEK for damages that were already in the report.

Beware of not so clear extra charges…

Beware of not so clear extra charges when picking up a car at Arlanda airport. In November I rented a car with Europcar via AutoEurope as a broker. At the time of pickup very little information was given, if anything a few grunts from the guy behind the desk when I tried to confirm the 10000SEK being held on my credit card, so very poor service here. This amount was supposed to cover any damages to the car which is normal although the amount held is way higher than Hertz or Sixt at Arlanda. As I had booked the car via AutoEurope I was not expecting any extra charge except maybe for some kind of local tax. So I got a big surprise when receiving the final invoice for a further 950SEK. As there was no clear explanation I contacted Europcar by mail (no other way possible) and 3 weeks later I got the explanation: When you pick up a car from Arlanda you will be charged by defaut for Stockholm road tolls regardless or not whether you are going into Stockholm or not (in my case I was going in the other direction). I was told that this is a standard rule for Europcar and cannot be changed (and it can be found deep in the fine print..). So when booking with Europcar make sure to take into account an extra 50SEK per day for road tolls! Do note however that I never got such a charge from Hertz or Sixt in Arlanda

Go somewhere else

When we arrived at the airport in Luleå, no one was at the rental window even though it was supposed to be open for another 35 minutes. Luckily, there was a kind gentleman at Avis who called the absent worker and got our keys from a lock box. Europcar should have called us or emailed us the code to the lock box. The van we received had a low tire pressure light. I do not recommend this company.

This is by far the worst car rental…

This is by far the worst car rental company ever. Europcar Hudiksvall.
We booked a car with insurance company, and suddenly they didn't have a car. Waited for hours. And the owner came home from his vacation and seemed angry or drunk. And he just send us away without any explanation.
Stay away from this company. They shouldn't be in this busines.... The owner didn't even want to talk to the main office I Germany who was on the phone with me. They was as supprized as us, that he didn't act according to the company's guidence.
Europcar suffers a very bad review and a promice to never use them again.

Booked a car with the delivery to the mechanics shop where I dropped my car for repair. When I arrived at the repair shop I found out that the repair shop also had a loaner ready for me. Called Europecar and explained the situation. Although the car was already delivered to the repair shop, my booking was cancelled without any charges. Overall, very smooth experience and very understanding stuff.

Make sure you bring an extra credit card when renting a car. In Italy they reserved €500 on my debit card on top of the rental fee. Returned the car on Saturday morning and it's Monday today....still no refund....nice.

WARNING! THEY MAY CHARGE YOU TOO FOR DAMAGE YOU DID NOT CAUSE!!!

When I picked up the car, the counter agent told me there was repaired windscreen damage (stone chip -- lagat stenskott). When I got to the car, sure enough I saw such damage a bit to the left of the front and down, in front of the driver's seat. I saw in the rental contract that an "A" marked on the damage report of the rental contract. The "A" was a bit closer to the centre, but I didn't see any damage at all there and assumed it related to what I did see. My wife also asked if it was marked, and I showed her it was. We had no other damage of any kind during our rental period, including to the windscreen. When I returned the car, there was nobody there to meet us (it was about 19:30) so I dropped the key in the night box as instructed by a little sign by the booth door. By the time I got to our flight, I had an email from Europcar saying there was unreported damage to the car and they sent photos of the very damage that we saw when we picked up the car. When I replied that that damage was there when we got the car, and that it was marked, I was told that that was not the repaired damage at all, and that I was responsible. They said the "A" was near the centre, so didn't relate to the damage we saw when we picked up the car. We saw no other windscreen damage, which is not surprising if the other chip (if there really was one) was small and the repair was done properly. This kind of behaviour is sadly common in other countries, and I do not like to think it has reached Sweden, so the only explanation I can come up with is that they neglected to separately mark all of the previous windscreen damage and now want to blame one of them on me. I wrote several times to complain. The responses either implied I was lying, or didn't see what I saw, or should have seen something else, or referred to their "routines" as justification. I hire cars 4-5 months (yes, months) every year and even on my own, right away, reported a chipped windscreen that *did* happen to me in January and took responsibility. Europcar Arlanda has now debited my credit card for the damage I did not cause, and has simply stopped responding to my emails. Don't let it happen to you. There are reputable and honest agencies in the same building – I know, since I hire from others there several times a year, for weeks and sometimes months at a time. Don't trust the filtered reviews on Europcar's own website and pages; look instead at the reviews on neutral sites such as this one or Google or the like. You'll see I am not alone in this experience.

Europcar don’t deliver the class of car paid for.

Ordered and paid for a luxury class car a few weeks in advance. Received a Skoda Supurb estate (standard class) as the branch didn’t have the class of car I ordered. No refund or price reduction, they did offer to pay for the fuel but the amount we used was not even close to the price difference between the car classes. Rental location was Stockholm Arlanda. Same thing happened in Heathrow when Europcar has only a premium car available when again I had ordered and paid for a luxury class. Disappointing all round.

fraudulent corporate practice

Me and my friends rented a car from Europcar for two weeks. Unfortunately, our car was broken into and our backpacks were stolen, so we had to cut our holiday short. Some days after returning the car, Europcar withdrew 6500KR from my friend's account, claiming that the break-in was our fault because we had left valuables in the car. Europcar does not respond to our emails. Beside the ridiculous reasoning, they simply take advantage of the fact that foreigners rarely take legal action, as many cannot afford to do so.

I highly recommend you to refrain from this company.

Scam branch of Europcar in Lulea

Even though i have used europcar a lot of times this time unfortunately i am really dissatisfied with the experience i had with the Lulea branch of Europcar. Your colleagues were completely unprofessional from the time i get there by not answering the main telephone line that they have before and during the lease of my car and also after the end of my lease. People who don't know their job by answering the line after 6 calls and saying that i am eating now i can't help you and i will call you back but never call back. Also, charging me for the whole deposit and withdrawing an extra 4000 SEK without letting me know what's the purpose and refusing me to send me a receipt for that money is completely illegal and sounds to me like a scam company that doesn't want to clarify their charges. Also when i have succeeded to come in contact with them after several calls every day they accused me of damaging the car and charge me for a whole renovation of the front plastic dumper for a small scratch that i didn't do to the car in the front underside of the plastic. It is just people that they want to steal money for customers for fake damages and just keep the money because the scratch was of course so small and not visible as it was in the underside of the dumper facing the road that maybe was already there when i received the car i didn't notice it to report it in a pickup but that's their way i guess. And if all that wasn't enough for a 1-day car lease with less than 40km i used the car they accusing me that they have a physical witness following me all day long and they told me that he had seen me damaging the car which is completely a lie and need legal actions to investigate these accusations. People there need to learn some good professional manners on how to speak and treat people. Shame to all the people working there and treat the customers in a scam way under the name of Europcar. Unfortunately, as my complaints to Europcar customer service in Swedish didn't have any result i will never use Europcar again in the future as the company doesn't take actions to limit these incidents and look to cover up the problem.

Convinient and nice service

rented cars from Europcar in different parts of SWeden many times. Works perfect! My favourite rent-a-car service. You can arrange the pick up time and leave the car in another location. I really liked it! recommended to anyone who is planning to rent a car! Very convinient.

Damage Rip Off

They claimed a damage that I am not responsible for. Amazingly, the amount they wanted, was equal to the amount they blocked on my card and so I never got it back.
