Several years ago we set out to create the language-learning program we had always wanted for ourselves. In the eight years since then we’ve handcrafted seven language programs, each one individually tailored to the needs of real learners. We spent all that time carving a unique path through each language to allow English-speakers to learn better and faster. While teaching Mandarin as if it was Spanish is very common, it wasn't good enough for us. Languages are the result of billions of conversations over hundreds, even thousands of years. This is the complexity that makes them beautiful and which tempts so many of us to take up the challenge of learning them. Of course it’s possible to play with an App and pick up a few words, but to actually retain enough Spanish to ask questions, give and receive directions, and have a conversation in a real setting takes a lot more than that. It takes a great teacher, the kind who leads, inspires, and challenges us to fluency. Conveying the magic of a great one-on-one tutorial in a digital program begins by placing the tutor at the center of learning—even on the iPhone. For those who really want to learn, our great teachers, our great explanations, and the way each language is carefully taught can make all the difference in the world. And that's what inspires our work. One more thing. While engaging, beautiful design is often dismissed as irrelevant in education, we beg to differ.

A little too early to tell, but...

I was instantly attracted to Fluenz, first by an instructor that is very easy to look at, but then by the ease at which I could understand and learn as she taught. I have not yet found the time to schedule regular sessions in my routine, but I am looking forward to it.

Things I Like and Things I don't Like.

First, I speak Italian, semi fluent. And I write in Italian again not fluent but adequate. I picked up Fluenz to help keep up with my Italian. I like the spelling exercises, for me so far not a problem but helpful. About the spelling, I do not like the separation of the article from the word. That is not how it’s spelled and not how it’s taught. Ok, for a demo of a new word, one lesson and after that the way it should be spelled the way you would see it spelled. Also the accent mark is a real pain, è and e` should be seen as the same. There are times I have to hit the accent mark 5 times before it takes.
I also have “Rosetta Stone”. For beginners I don’t recommend it. I like the way Fluenz handles the verbs, cannot say the same for RS. However what RS does give a learner is work with pronouncing the words. The feedback is excellent. Fluenz really needs this for it to become a first class tool for learning. After all “Rocket Italian” has it and it’s on the web. You can record and listen to your self as in RS.
OK, I like Fluenz but as it stands now, if you are only using Fluenz you need to add either RS or Rocket Italian.

Great German lessons!

More than 40 years ago I studied German in college. I only wish Fluenz had been around then! Recently, I spent several weeks going through Fluenz German 1 before our recent trip to Germany to relearn the language. It was a very pleasant experience and I felt I really learned a lot in a short period of time. I wanted to be able to speak the language to some degree because we were doing a driving vacation and going to small towns where English might not be spoken...or at least not spoken well. It paid off! I was very conversational. Fluenz is a great product! I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn a new language.

Wonderful Program

Overall an excellent program. I have attempted many language programs and books and this is by far the best. My only reservation is that one obviously has to commit to the time and effort to get results.

Fluenz Italian

Excellent user friendly program geared to useful conversational Italian. Well thought out teaching plan with appropriate repitition geared to maximum retention. The conversational review discs are not particularly challenging. Something to consider would be to have links on your homepage to movies or short films in the various languages

Great, real world language learning tool

I had thought about purchasing other language "learn at your own pace" software for Italian for a few years. I finally decided to go ahead and buy one and stumbled upon Fluenz. I had never heard of it prior to this and was about to buy Rosetta Stone since I had their free demo. Fluenz, had a different approach, however, which was to teach conversational Italian - words, phrases, etc. which would be used in the real world. All the lessons are presented in an interesting way with explanations of why words and phrases are used. I decided I'd buy it and I'm extremely pleased with the teaching approach. It teaches you the language in a way you can use almost immediately with phrases which you will use on a trip to Italy - what you learn is everyday speaking. Definitely would recommend!

Great learning tool!

I really like Fluenz over all the other systems I have tried including Rosetta Stone. The only thing that stops me from giving it 5 stars is because the iPad app and the computer program do not sync with each other so you have to keep track yourself where you left off. Pod casts are excellent as well.

The most comprehensive and fun language method around!

I am a native of Brazil so I already speak a few romance languages. But French has always been a challenge to me. The pronunciation is very distinct from Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. Besides, I have reached a certain age that makes "learning new tricks" a bit more intimidating if you know what I mean.
Fluenz has transformed the ways I used to think of language acquisition. It is fun, accessible and the pace is just right. Sonia and her team have really put a lot of thinking into how adults learn. I felt comfortable and challenged by the method at the same time. The best part is that it did not take me months to start "speaking" the language. I felt confident right away to try my newly acquired skills with my French speaking friends. Later on when I traveled to France, my experience with the culture was richer and much more rewarding because of my ability to understand a lot of what was being said.
Merci beaucoup Fluenz team! I am hooked. Can't wait to start French 2, 3, 4 and 5!

Excellent program. Great results!

I really appreciated the broad scope of this program. Instead of learming vocabulary in a vacuum, it gives the exact amount f framework you need to speak understandably and correctly.
I love Sonia's presentation of the material. I completed The last lesson of Italian 1 on the plane to Rome; and was able to make my way through Italy with what I learned. So glad I chose Fluenz over the other leading program! One suggestion: A short review built in as a stand alone at the end of each session would really help when you are just looking for refreshers of things learned during a session. The audio CD is great and helpful, but doesn't quite perform this need. Overall it was great and I highly recommend Fluenz.

Very helpful to me.

This is by far a better method of teaching as opposed to ( Rosetta Stones). I regrated buying Rosetta after a few weeks. Experiencing like i didn't learned much, and their methods were not very helpful. It would be nice if you can communicate with others live people. But not a big deal.

Great experience compared to Rosetta Stone

I have tried both programs and I found Fluenz to be the best by far to teach myself Italian. I used Rosetta Stone to see how their program worked, I found myself lost after just a few chapters. I would highly recommend Fluenz to anyone wanting to learn a new language. Fluenz is a well thought out program that eases you into the new language.

Trouble with Spoken Portions of Sessions in French 3

I just started French 3 and I'm having a lot of trouble understanding the spoken portions of the sessions. I understand this may be what we will hear when listening to native speakers, but it's almost impossible to get through a session. I went through 1 and 2 with very little trouble and I can understand what I learned from them when listening to any source of material. I watch and listen to videos on the web for listening practice.

fluenz

I have tried Rosetta Stone and French in Action. I feel I am learning quicker with Fluenz. My only criticism is the DVD doesn't give one enough time to think of the reply in French before the answer is given and sometimes I can't understand what is being said.

Useful but tedious

Fluenz French has been useful, however, I find the lessons to be tedious. It is the same format for every lesson. I understand why they designed it this way, but I appreciate a deviation every now and then. I purchased French 1-3 and to complete 90 lessons in the same format certainly does not make me look forward to the experience. In addition, some key conversational vocabulary is missing. For instance, I am almost finished with French 2, and I have yet to learn the vocab for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yet I do know how to conjugate the verbs for I want, I must, I need and I would like. It seems like their prioritization is off. I am having to rely on other resources to teach me basic conversational phrases. I think the greatest enhancement to this program would be more focus on useful vocab and less on similar verbs and complex sentence structures that may never be used in a simple trip to France.

Fluenz - The Very, Very Best in Foreign Language Programs

If you can't afford private foreign language training and want to learn a foreign language at your own pace, then Fluenz is the program for you. I have both the Spanish and German programs and really like how there is a tutor in each session to explain things. There are plenty of written exercises to do to test your comprehension and if you type an incorrect answer, you can easily find out what you did wrong, correct it, and move on. You can also record your voice so that you know what to improve as far as your pronunciation. Fluenz is far superior to Rosetta Stone. The software is also easy to download onto your computer, Ipad, or Iphone. Technical support is very good, too.

The value for what you pay for

By far the best program if you need structure to help you learn a language. After purchasing, you have a two-year term of access, however I was never explained this at the start, so I had assumed you bought it for life. Regardless, there's so much the program has to offer!

It starts out with an introduction, followed by conversation comprehension. The instructor will break-down the conversation, then the workouts begin. You'll memorize vocabulary lists, match sentences, match pictures to words, translate the vocabulary, then translate phrases. Afterwards, you'll rely on your ears and translate the phrases and vocabulary again. Next is vocal practice as you repeat the conversation from the start, then write it out by ear. Complete the sentences, match sentences, study another vocab list and you're done.

These lessons are quite lengthy, but you're hit with a lot of information to retain, making it worth it in the end!

Absolutely love it.

Worked through the test lesson of Fluenz along with a that of a big name competitor. No contest. Fluenz won hands down. Have had it for a few months. My wife and I do the lessons together. Logical, systematic, fun. You can start from zero and it holds your hand. Lessons progress as you do.
