FreeUp just isn't what it used to be

FreeUp just isn't what it used to be. The platform started out with *incredible* potential. There were plentiful clients, and vetting was done comprehensively and was done well. In 2021, ownership changed hands. Since then, the company has become a mockery of its former self.

The "help" doesn't do what their title suggests. They no longer vet clients, and scams get through by the dozens. When reporting a client as a scam, they then want you to fill out a HUGE form detailing WHY YOU BELEIVE THEY ARE A SCAM, wasting even more of your time after interacting with a scammer.

The FreeUp team DOES NOT help with any issues either. They say they are working on it, then simply drop it, without a word. Reach back out, they will apologize and say they will get back to you in a short timeframe. Nothing. They will do this repeatedly. They just don't care. They simply want to siphon and not actually do any of the work they guarantee you.

Dark Patterns, Misleading System & Unfair Seller Penalties

This is one of the most poorly managed and unfair platforms I’ve used. Even after I clearly disabled coins on my listings, customers are still able to send and attempt purchases using coins. This proves the system either doesn’t work properly or is intentionally designed to mislead sellers.
FreeUp coins are completely useless for sellers, yet the platform keeps forcing this system. On top of that, when I reject coin offers, I get penalized, which is absolutely ridiculous. I have already been charged ₹1000–₹2000+ in penalties for something that is clearly not my fault.
Support is equally disappointing. I raised complaints with full proof, but there has been no proper response or resolution. This shows a complete lack of accountability.
This feels like a manipulative and exploitative setup where sellers are forced into unwanted transactions and then punished for resisting it.
Very frustrating experience. I would strongly advise sellers to be cautious before using this platform.

Not good!

The platform does not deliver on its promise of well-vetted clients. I repeatedly encountered clients who were extremely cheap, engaged in roadmap fishing, rescoping mid-project, or manufacturing issues to demand discounts.

This is compounded by FreeUp’s weak mediation process and failure to require clients to commit funds upfront. A client can appear “active” with as little as $1 on a credit card. This enables bad actors to leverage multiple freelancers for free work, claim the output was insufficient, and then stitch together the unpaid deliverables to complete their project. Freelancers are left with exploited labor, reputational damage, and the burden of defending themselves while FreeUp operates with a guilty-until-proven-innocent mindset.

Compensation is further eroded by allowing clients from low-cost labor markets to post US-facing opportunities, driving rates well below minimum wage. When you factor in FreeUp’s 20% platform fee and an additional 10% tax burden, the economics simply do not make sense.

Customer support consistently sides with the client by default. Expect aggressive email follow-ups and pressure framed as “mediation,” where you are treated as adversarial to both the client and the platform. To receive even neutral consideration, you must provide extensive documentation, and even then, impartiality is not guaranteed.

Overall, the risk-to-reward ratio is heavily skewed against freelancers, with inadequate protections, weak enforcement, and systemic incentives that enable exploitation.

Reliable Platform with Quality Clients

I’ve been freelancing for a while and FreeUp has honestly been one of the better platforms I’ve worked with. The screening process takes some effort, but it really pays off because the clients and projects are solid. I like that I’m not wasting time applying to low-quality gigs, and the matches usually make sense for my skills. Payments have been smooth and on time, and the FreeUp team has been helpful whenever I’ve had questions. Overall, it’s been a reliable platform and I’m glad I joined.

One of the best decisions ever

I’ve been working with the FreeUp platform for more than 8 years now, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunities it has given me. I was introduced to FreeUp by a family friend, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions for my work-from-home career.

The platform is reliable, professional, and consistently connects freelancers with quality clients. The team is supportive, responsive, and genuinely cares about both freelancers and clients. Over the years, FreeUp has helped me grow professionally while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for long-term, remote work opportunities with a trusted platform.

This platform has proven to be a huge…disappointment!

This platform has proven to be a huge disappointment as a creative. As someone w/ 25 years experience in many types of content development, branding and marketing work...most of the work offered is something I would be perfect for, and my portfolio reflects it. However, 95% of the work I apply for is kicked back, and I am told is offered to other freelancers. In addition to this...the pay for the work on this site is so extremely low that working on it generally means you work for peanuts!!

All in all, my time spent on this site has been a huge disappointment for a company advertising they are quite the opposite. Anyone can say they are the best...it is obvious these guys are not, and don't support those who could get them there!

Unprofessional Interview Experience

They stated clear communication and a positive attitude required for the applicant, yet during my interview, the interviewer had their camera on but only showed a FreeUp template background and even asked if it was okay to record the session. It also felt unprofessional when, after asking if I had any questions, they seemed in a hurry to end the interview. I had already anticipated that I wouldn’t pass based on the interviewer’s behavior, and four days later, I received a generic rejection email stating they couldn’t provide the reason for their decision. I don’t mind being rejected, but this experience suggests that the company doesn’t seem to value fairness, which reflects poorly on their management.

Hi Ark, thank you for reaching out about your experience. It is standard here for us to record all interviews, which is why we ask for permission. Additionally, we use the FreeUp templated background to provide a uniform setting for all FreeUp interviews, as we are a fully remote company. That said, because the interview was recorded, I will personally review the interview to see what happened. Our goal is to provide fair interviews to all applicants while still upholding our value of only hiring the top 1% of applicants. Thank you, and please feel free to reach out to us directly for any further questions.

Using terms like ‘overbilling’ or ‘breach of contract’ to dodge accountability doesn’t excuse you from your obligations.

I’d like to set the record straight regarding the recent concerns you’ve raised. There were two payments due: one for $150 on March 12 and another for $56.20 on March 19. Only the March 19 payment has been made for $56.20. But March 12 is pending.
I have the receipt confirming that the March 12 amount is still unpaid.
Given this, it’s concerning to hear terms like “overbilling” or “breach of contract” being mentioned. I’ve fulfilled all my responsibilities and delivered the work exactly as agreed. The issue here isn’t overbilling—it’s that full payment hasn’t been made.
I’ve always approached our agreement professionally, and I’m simply asking for the compensation that reflects the work I’ve already completed.

Best freelancer platform you’ll find

I have been using FreeUp for about 8 years now and I love the team! Most freelancers I hired were perfect for the job and on an off chance they weren’t 100% who I needed, FreeUp team was always at the ready to find me an exact person I was looking for. Each freelancer was perfect in communicating and always early for our meetings. As someone raised with “if you’re on time you’re already late” mentality I really appreciated that!

Lack of Accountability or oversight

A lack of proper planning, budgeting and leadership in lead to chaos in business operations. Sometimes it's not the company can't pay....it's that they don't prioritize employee compensation.

Hello Kreatuedu, we're sorry you feel this way. Our freelancers set their own rates on our platform and are paid out on a weekly basis. No one is ever required to accept a job outside of their set rate. We'd love to hear more about your experience as we don't have any freelancers on our platform with your name. Please feel free to reach out to support@freeup.net!

I had a great experience working with…

I had a great experience working with FreeUp. I want to give a special shout out to Kaye, Marie and Brittany for their support. I've worked with a few contractors/freelancers before and this has by far been the best experience. I brought on Kaye as a VA and exceeded my expectations. You're probably wondering why I stopped working with FreeUp...it just came down to margins. As a business, over time, you need to start bringing people in internally rather than externally. So, it was a business decision to focus on internal hiring rather than working with anymore agencies.

But if you're looking for good freelancers, a good VA and a support team to help you find the right fit, FreeUp is an agency I would highly recommend.

Overall, I'm happy with the work that Kaye and the team delivered to me.
