Miss leading information!!

Miss leading information!!!
I started to choose an insurance at Genki for the period 26-08-25 until 27-09-25. This is the period we are on Holiday. 26-09-25 we are back in home country.

However I got charge for a new insurance period from 28-09-25 until 27-10-25.
€162.30

I DID NOT CHOOSE THIS INSURANCE!
I DID NOT CHOOSE THE PERIOD
28-09-25 until 27-10-25

Via online chat service Genki informed me to cancel subscriptions.

I cancelled subscription and cancellation starts from 29-09-25 . Genki refund not all amount of money back! I will pay 28-09-25 an insurance I did not choose for!
This is misleading and it’s scamming.

Hi Klant,

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Genki Traveler is set up for a maximum term of 12 months, with automatic monthly payments (like other online subscriptions).

As soon as your coverage starts, you can request the cancellation of your insurance on a future date, but it can only take effect after the first monthly cycle ends. From then on, you can choose any effective cancellation date, provided it’s in the future at the time you request it. Because of this structure, you can’t set a fixed end date at sign-up.

You have requested the cancellation of your insurance to be effective on the following day. A partial refund of the unused days of that same monthly cycle was done automatically. It takes between 5-10 business days for the payment provider to complete the transfer after the refund is closed in our system.

All customers have to explicitly confirm the following with a checkbox during sign-up:
"I understand that Genki Traveler is a one-year contract with a monthly payment that I can cancel anytime after the first month."

If you need any further information, please contact our support at help@genki.world.

Hugely disappointing customer service attitude

Like many digital-first platforms, Genki is completely fine. So long as you fit within the average parameters of their service, then it is smooth sailing - if you have a minor claim, submit the needed documents, claim approved and paid quickly. The automated side works well. Coverage is comprehensive.

When you actually interact with Genki it's clear how limited the company is - customer service isn't exactly friendly. This is all part of how they keep their premiums visibly lower than bigger competitors.

I also fell foul of the application question - "In the last 6 weeks have you experienced any health issues/symptoms that are not medically clarified?" - and my insurance was cancelled.

This question seems innocent enough - in truth it is underhanded underwriting, intended to minimise risk to the insurer as much as possible.

Health questions such as these are such a grey area, how would and what should a person even report here? Except for obvious symptoms, like a fractured bone, asking applicants to self-diagnose feels like a trick question. A bit like how they say to never diagnose yourself on the internet and to seek medical clarification if you are worried.

It gives squarelife much more wherewithal to review and reject claims or cancel insurance policies at their discretion, even when it is unfair, leaving the individual having to find new insurance, wherever they are in the world.

Similar story with the claims process - anything up to 2,000 Euros does not require pre-approval to claim against. 2,000 Euros is still a hefty outlay. But if a <2,000 Euros claim just happens to be rejected for any reason, you're out of pocket.

At time of applying, I had no pre-existing conditions or symptoms. Unfortunately the medical professional - not a native English speaker - wrote my diagnosis in a way that made it appear so.

Genki then sent me an accusative scripted email, effectively calling me a liar.

I appealed the decision. Genki rejected the appeal. I spoke to the medical professional and asked them to redraft their diagnosis to make clear the diagnosis now versus what led to me seeking help. Genki ignored the message.

I have maintained throughout that I had no "symptoms" before applying. What even is a symptom, feeling stressed? Welcome to every digital nomad.

I cannot prove it, but I suspect that as I am at the upper age band and was already undergoing treatment through Genki insurance already that the underwriters were looking for ways to cancel me on the grounds of cost versus their thresholds.

They also took payment of 410 Euros for my premium after cancelling the policy, so now I'm trying to get a refund. I have had two non-responses via help so far.

You can see in the curt way that Genki responds to one-star reviews here; never admitting any culpability, putting responsibility back onto the user and demonstrating little empathy, that they fit the insurance company stereotype and not the modern health and wellness positioning they promote.

So in summary, if you're an average customers, it'll be fine. Customer service, disappointing. Underwriting, unpleasant. Appeal process, non-existent. Use Genki with your eyes wide open.

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your experience. Let me address your points clearly.

Your refunds were processed on the 3rd of September; they were not upheld or delayed. Refunds will take between 5-10 business days to be completed. I’ve just emailed you the refund receipts so you can verify with your bank if needed.

Squarelife is Genki Native's insurer and makes decisions on eligibility, claim outcomes, and any policy terminations or appeals. Your appeal and the related communications were handled directly by Squarelife; we were not part of that exchange. If communication from the insurer is ever delayed or unclear, our team steps in to help move things along and explain the outcome, but we can’t override the insurer’s decisions.

On the application question about “health issues/symptoms in the last 6 weeks that are not medically clarified”: Genki Native is a private international health insurance designed to provide comprehensive, long-term coverage worldwide. Because of that scope and duration, applications are reviewed based on a medical questionnaire. We ask applicants to provide complete information during the application so any necessary exclusions are identified from the start, which helps prevent unexpected claim rejections or the risk of insurance termination later on.

It’s reasonable to expect applicants to be aware of symptoms that have not yet been clarified by a doctor; not only do diagnosed conditions matter, but pre-existing symptoms matter too.

In this case, some details in the application did not fully reflect your situation; had these been shared upfront, the coverage could not have been offered under the same conditions. That is why, unfortunately, the coverage could not continue. The assessment done by the insurer to conclude that there was a duty of disclosure breach is based on medical evidence.

With planned care, non-emergency outpatient procedures or examinations costing €2,000 or more, it's required to give prior notice to Squarelife at least five days in advance; without prior notice, reimbursement may be limited to 50% of eligible costs.

Hospitalizations and planned surgeries are arranged via direct billing with the hospital after approval, so you don’t have to pay the hospital upfront.

If anything remains unclear, reply to my email and I’ll clarify.

Rejected from joining because I was…

Rejected from joining because I was using betterhelp, NOT for mental health reasons. I was using betterhelp to simply improve my relationship working with a therapist. I have no pre-existing conditions and both physically and mentally super healthy. I even offered to provide any proof needed to prove betterhelp was used for this purpose and nothing else, but just because of the fact that I am in betterhelp, I was denied to join. (I actually was accepted first, then one of the rep reported me as I asked about covering betterhelp).

I get that having a pre-existing condition both physically and mentally is a criteria for rejection, but in my case I really don't have any of those and I wasn't lying, so it definitely left a bad taste for me.

Marc from Genki responded below stating "Please also note that not just pre-existing conditions are relevant when applying, but also pre-existing symptoms."

This is exactly what I mean. I literally have NO pre-existing symptoms both physically and mentally.

Many underwriters differentiate “counseling” from diagnosed conditions. I don't have any diagnosed mental health conditions. I was simply "counseling/talking" with a therapist.

My BetterHelp sessions were for relationship/communication coaching, not for treatment of a mental health disorder.

I have no psychiatric diagnosis, have not been prescribed any psychiatric medication, and have never been hospitalized for mental health.

I have no history of suicidality or self-harm.

And I even offered multiple times to provide a letter from the counselor confirming the above (non-diagnostic counseling, no meds, no impairment).

And yet, just because "I am in betterhelp", I was rejected. Which again feels pretty unfair to be honest.

Hey Sean,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. I understand how disappointing this situation must feel.

When applying for our lifelong insurance, we are required to ask health and medical questions so the insurer can properly understand the risk. This includes recent consultations with healthcare providers, such as professional therapists, even when accessed through apps like BetterHelp.

In this case, some details in the application did not fully reflect your situation. Had these been shared upfront, the coverage could not have been offered under the same conditions. This is why, unfortunately, the coverage could not continue. Please also note that not just pre-existing conditions are relevant when applying, but also pre-existing symptoms.

We clearly state during the sign-up process that providing incorrect information can lead to a loss of insurance coverage. While it may not be much comfort, it is ultimately better that such issues come to light early, rather than later when coverage is most needed and the consequences of cancellation could be severe.

We are truly sorry we cannot offer you coverage at this time.

We wish you the best of health moving forward 🌱

The service as okay

The service as okay what I did not like was that as soon as I signed up they took away the air doctor app which was one key point of me joining plus the 50€ deductible is a bit much in my opinion.

Hi Diana,

Thanks for your feedback.

The Air Doctor app was an extra service and not part of the guaranteed coverage. While it’s currently unavailable, your outpatient coverage remains the same—you can see any local doctor, pay upfront, and claim reimbursement. For hospitalizations and surgeries, our 24/7 assistance always arranges direct billing.

Regarding the deductible: it’s €50 per insurance case (not per bill) and helps keep premiums affordable. This is actually below the industry average for this type of coverage.

We’re continuously working to improve our services and really value your input 💙

One year later the hospital came back…

One year later the hospital came back to me and told me that I have to pay a bill, which I had the confirmation from Dr.Walter and Genki that they pay. Now they want the money from me. And to be honest it’s the worst thing which can happen to you, I was sick with fever and feeling super bad. Now I even have to worry that they don’t pay or coming back to me. Nobody cares but I can’t travel to Thailand if they don’t pay. That’s the worst and not recommend, never had this with any travel insurance.

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your case.

To clarify: direct hospital billings are handled by our managing insurance partner. If there is ever an issue with a hospital still requesting payment, customers can always reach out to our support team. We will immediately inform our partner so that the matter can be resolved.

You can rest assured that any treatment within coverage will be paid—through direct settlement with the hospital in case of inpatient care, or by reimbursement in case of outpatient treatment.

Please contact our support team (help@genki.world) so we can identify your specific case and follow up on the next steps together.

A must for frequent travelers

I spend most of the year abroad and finding trustworthy healthcare solutions has always been stressful. With them, I don’t feel like I’m on my own anymore. The service feels personal, and I love that they actually understand the lifestyle of people living and working abroad.

So far so good!

After 3 months in, I had to use the insurance (unfortunately). Not only the claim process is transparent and support staff is responsive and helpfull, also the processing of the claim has been quick and professional! I got the money for treatment reimbursed, as expected. No shady tactics, no unjustified fighting the claim. Thanks Genki/squarelife! Thumbs up!

Disappointing experience with Genki / Squarelife

I had the Genki Native Premium plan, but my experience was far from premium. When I needed support, I provided clear evidence regarding my case, yet it was not accepted. Instead, I was met with excessive bureaucracy, requests for nearly impossible documents from abroad, and pressure to accept exclusions or face cancellation. Insurance should provide security and trust, not obstacles and stalling.

The Company of integrity

This is not my first interaction with the company, and once again, everything was fast, friendly, and attentive to detail. Genki truly does its job — they pay!

The app and digital tools are simple and user-friendly.

I genuinely hope that people use insurance honestly and with integrity — so the system continues to work fairly for everyone. A true win-win

Partner Commissions Unpaid Since March 2025. Legal Action Initiated

I joined Genki's affiliate program with high hopes, as their product seems genuinely useful for the digital nomad community. Initially, everything worked as expected.

However, the situation took a drastic turn in March 2025. Since then, all commission payments have been frozen. The official reason given was a "system upgrade," but it has now been over four months with no resolution and no payments. Genki currently owes me €459.94 in earned commissions.

After my initial inquiries were ignored, I was forced to take formal action based on our legally binding contract (signed Oct 14, 2024). My steps included:

Sending a formal legal demand for payment (Mahnung) to their German office.

Filing an official complaint with their regulating body in Germany, the IHK Köln (Cologne Chamber of Commerce).

As a final step, I have now filed for a European Order for Payment through the German courts (Amtsgericht Wedding, Berlin) to legally enforce the payment of my owed commissions.

My experience shows a concerning disregard for contractual obligations. Be extremely cautious if you are considering partnering with Genki. The company has proven unwilling to pay earned commissions, even when faced with regulatory complaints and impending legal action.

I will update this review if and when Genki pays the full amount owed. Until then, I cannot recommend them as a trustworthy partner.

Your reimbursement options are not…

Your reimbursement options are not suitable for someone living in Turkey. After experiencing an emergency during my trip abroad and requesting a reimbursement, none of the suggested methods worked for me. Card transfer: My Turkish debit/credit card is not accepted.

Revolut: I cannot create a Revolut account. It keeps saying “an email will be sent,” but I never receive anything.Because my Turkish sim is not supported, I also tried using my Hong Kong eSIM number, but it is not supported either.

Bank transfer: This is the only remaining option, but I have been informed that international transfers to Turkey may incur €10–25 in fees. That would mean I receive nothing from the transfer. With the €50 fee for the initial treatment and the bank transfer charges, I ended up covering the hospital expenses myself. The insurance provided no real benefit to me. I also found the €50 fee for the initial illness unreasonable. This wasn’t just a regular illness — it was an emergency, and that’s exactly what insurance is supposed to cover.

Hi Berfin,

Thank you for sharing your experience.

With Genki Traveler, reimbursements are possible via Revolut payouts or by direct bank transfer. We don’t charge any payout fees ourselves—any fees you may see are set by your bank and are beyond our control.

Revolut is the simplest option, since payments arrive instantly and usually without fees; if you haven’t already, you can open a free account in just a few minutes.

As for the €50 deductible, this small, per-case amount is standard in travel-health insurance, and at €50 it’s actually below the industry average. Deductibles help us keep overall premiums affordable, maintain a high level of coverage worldwide, and guard against fraud and abuse.
