Biggest scam ever. I would rate negative if I could

I would rate negative if I could. Biggest scam. Impossible to cancel. Lies on their website. You must cancel your credit card to get them to stop billing. They ignore calls. No way to cancel online. Chat is always down. Avoid unless you want to pay hundreds of dollars for nothing.

The Boston Globe is a horror show when it comes to customer service. In addition, they use their promotions to garner subscriptions. They then change the terms and start billing at full price.
It’s a deceitful racket. But then again, given some of their editorials, one cannot be surprised by behavior which lacks the moral and ethical high ground.

Inconsistent delivery

The paper is ok. The home delivery is terrible and getting worse. We get the Sunday edition. One week it is in the BG container, next week- no deliver, the following week- thrown on the lawn, next week - no delivery. And on it goes-despite complaints to the BG. Apparently neither the carrier or BG mgt gives a damn.

Okay paper with marginally deceptive subscription practices

Decent paper for local Massachusetts news, but if you accidentally read too many "free" articles, or push the wrong button, you will be be automatically subscribed at about $30 per month for online access, recurring monthly. You can't unsubscribe online from their account page, you are forced to call a special toll-free number during limited hours (and when you do they will waste your time by offering numerous additional special deals, all of which end with an autorenew at $30/month). If you make the mistake of starting a CS chat session, you will be told to call after 10-15 minutes of back and forth messages (typing in your address etc) with the "Help" team.

This is a blatant effort by the Globe and the company that handles their subscriptions (Ada Support Inc.) to discourage cancellations by making the unsubscription process as difficult, time-consuming, and inconvenient as possible.

By contrast, discontinuing a NY Times or Washington Post subscription is a simple one-step online process.

Frankly, $30/month is more than I pay for digital access to NYTImes and Washington Post combined. And the Globe is simply not in the same category of news organization.

This combination of exorbitant cost and near-deceptive and inconvenient subscription practices means that trying to discontinue an accidental subscription to the Globe (and back out the charges for it) will leave a bad taste in your mouth. They will only back out charges for accidental subscriptions for one month. I have stopped going to their website completley due to experiencing these problems repeatedly.

I realize many newspapers are struggling these days, but alienating their occasional online readers is not the way to boost readership.
