A very enjoyable tour. Stella our tour guide was very good, friendly, helpful, & proactive in her planning. The day we went to the market could probably be a better itinerary. For example leaving earlier to have more time in the market. And possibly a visit to a local vineyard, instead of the 2hour scenic tour back to our hotel. Hotel, a very nice location, convenient for visits to the Carcassone Castlle & town. Well appointed. The maid service was sometimes hap hazard, ie bottom sheet of bed not always attended to & sometimes bins not emptied. Staff friendly & helpful.

Carcassonne is a lovely place to visit with a beautiful walled citadel, which can be seen from the Hotel du Roi’s excellent location. There is a lot packed into this trip, an extra day might be better, thus allowing more free time.

Super Leader! To be expected, crowded boarding at St Pancreas until we reached our cars and worth first class tickets all the way to Toulouse. Lovely hotel with fantastic views. Good breakfasts each day followed by mostly leisurely starts. Carcassonne the town and castle did not disappoint. I got sick, was well taken care of and Della who lead us to the doctor’s staying with my husband. She kept in contact with us the whole time we were away. Sadly we missed the chateaux, wine tasting, and lunch but I was well enough to enjoy our last evening with new friends dining in the village of Carcassonne.

An excellent tour with a well located hotel, an experienced and professional tour manager and wonderful excursions /places to visit. It was great to travel by train, particularly 1st class, to see the countryside in our way

Great trip. Lovely hotel. Great Tour Manager - Della. Amazing tours. Great breakfast selection. Would have given it 5 stars but set dinner menus at the hotel were not 5 star!

We had a great trip. The hotel was lovely - beautiful view of Carcassonne. We enjoyed all of the trips, they were a nice mix, although we did feel that the Mirepoix trip could have been organised differently. The journey back took over 2 hours, and whilst it was nice to drive through the Pyrenees, we could have made better use of our time. We felt that the holiday was a good mix of organised time and free time. Our tour guide Steve was great. All in all we had a great time and would recommend this holiday.

A great few days with a mixed and interesting programme of activity. An excellent tour guide. The reason I have not chosen 5 stars is the experience of getting on to Eurostar at St Pancras and Paris respectively - admittedly outwith the direct control of Great Rail Travel - was a pain. The system needs a major overhaul!

The trip was excellent with a superb tour manager

Carcasonne was stunning along with the excellent hotel overlooking the river and castle. We were well looked after and tours spot on. The journey to and from unfortunately let the holiday down. Chaotic experiences at both ends of Eurostar along with a 3 hour wait at Gare Montparnasse on way out. Crowds encountered here were remicient of India experiences. The heat did not help.

While we knew ahead of time a lot of "time at leisure" was built into the itinerary, we thought suggestions would be made as to how to productively use it, which was not the case at all. As a consequence, as much or more time was spent in unproductive time at leisure than was in structured, guided activities. While our Tour Manager was perfectly genial, we felt he did the bare minimum to fulfill his responsibilities, not really trying at all to provide the group useful information as to where we were going, why we were going there, what there was to see, learn and do, and so forth, which was quite different from our (admittedly limited) experience on other tours in or from the British Isles. While the Hotel du Roe was very nice, it was not centrally located in an area with abundant shops, cafes, and restaurants, and no information was provided as to what places were available, how to access them, and so forth. The venues visited on excursions were interesting but not exceptional. All in all, the experiences were not worth the out-of-pocket cost or the wear-and-tear involved in the very long (e.g. 12+ hour) days at the front and back ends getting to and fro southern France from London to start and end the tour. Those days were not "Great Rail Journeys" either -they were eurostar and TGV, with the hassle, crowds and confusion involved with clearing customs and security going each way.
