Horrible banking experience

Just awful. Rude staff, locked accounts, denied access to my money and account multiple times, card constantly not working, useless staff both over the phone and in branch. Why trust them?

I Trust Great Southern Bank

Been a 10+ year customer with Great Southern Bank, and banked at many different branches in various towns. I appreciate the way they handle security. I hope that it continues. For a larger bank, I still feel that my account(s) is safe from unauthorized access.

Runaway from GSbank as far as possible

Runaway from great south bank as far and as fast as possible , they treat customers as scammer . They hold your money for however long. Once your money is in this bank , it is not yours . Banks are tough these days , but this one is by far the worst .

My father passed away , I wanted to send 50k to an India reputable legit charity trust account for my fathers funeral praying service as my own culture and religion choice .

Called customer Service , the nice support had to ask me the purpose and remind me scam risk before increase my payment limit which is fair .

Second day , I was required to call fraud team , talked to Annal(unsure of spelling ) . Got asked dozens of private offensive questions such as

What for? Who to send to
Who are they
When did I know them
How did I know them
Do I know all of them
How long have I been with them
How do I communicate with them
Why did I open account with this bank
What happed to my other bank …
…….
I gave full authentic detailed answers, I offered to go to the branch to get myself verified . I offered to make a statuary declaration, if anything is wrong , I am full responsible and not after the bank .

I gave them the name of the charity leader , there is phone number for the charity for them to check up on the form .the Guru is widely known and easily googled .

After 54 min questioning , they did not want to send the fund .

I can’t delay my father’ funeral praying service payment , the charity is kind enough to do it without getting paid , but it is wrong to take a free ride for the very critical process for my fathers soul .

I asked them to cancel the transfer and send the fund back to my account asap if they can’t transfer it . And unblock my account .

She told me it takes up to 1-2 business days for the fund to be back .
My account can not be unblocked , it is subject to further review .
After nearly an hour questioning , I cried and asked what’s wrong with me spending my own money for my dead father’s funeral praying service , she hung me up .

Now it’s one full week, my fund is not back . Customer service and branch staff are understanding and trying to help , but they couldnt help .

Apparently, great south bank fraud team made sure some one must be scammer .
They believe it is me or my charity .
I took my Govermemt job payslip , bank account savings to the branch .
I am not scammer , my compassionate charity is pure and innocent .
If someone has to be fraud and scammer in this process , it’s you Ms Annal , it is your fraud team , it’s great south bank .

You don’t send the fund , you don’t refund .
You are too incompetent to know your real people , real customer .
You treat your customer as scammer using the good will “making sure you are safe “
Your system is incompetent to provide the service .

So much stress for the process , it’s more painful to write it but I do it for all ppl to see so that no one else falls into your trap again . They hold your money , not letting you spend your critical money for your safety , same smell as not letting you go to work or seeing your family for your health .

If you don’t want your money to be blocked and held by the bank for your safety , don’t come to this bank .

Can’t even purchase a Nintendo add-on…

Can’t even purchase a Nintendo add-on for Mario kart 8 (g rated) because of the fact I’m under 18. Kinda ridiculous how they’re blocking purchases like that just because I’m under 18 when my other bank allows it perfectly fine and especially since it’s G rated and they refuse to change it until I'm 18...

Ok for the most part

Ok for the most part, savings rate is strong with minimal conditions. Importantly you get refunded all your international transaction fees at the end of the month.

Only a couple of issues where they've frozen my account and withheld my money requiring ID checks, but there were done quickly.

I'm sure I'll remain a customer so long as I don't encounter any further issues down the track.

too much to give them one star

I feel it is too much to give them one star. Terrible service and leadership.
I went to castle hill branch to open one account for myself. The male staff did not greet, not even introduce himself. While he was sitting on the chair, not even offered me to take a seat. First question was that we only open the account for citizens and PRs. I said I am. Second question was that , why you don’t open the account with other big 4 banks. I was shocked with the service. Should this be his job to tell me what bank account your bank offers to customers. I said it is a silly question from a bank staff to ask their customers why they choose this bank. He said it is their policy to ask this question. Later on I requested to talk with the branch manager. A young lady showed up without introducing her name, she just said I am the branch manager. We don’t ask customers to sit down because some customers hurt themselves in the branch and customers can choose to sit down by themselves. And it is their bank’ policy to ask why customer choose this bank rather than other banks. I was shocked. I thought it is the business manner to tell people your name when you start a conversation. And if you donot want to offer seat to customers, why you still have chairs in the branch. I cannot believe why this bank invested so much money to set up a branch in castle hill but they have such terrible attitude towards their customers.

Steer Clear of This Bank

Steer clear of this bank. Don't know if they are intentionally screw ups or just that incompetent. Multiple issue from the start. More interested in chatting amicably than doing their job, i.e, trusting them to execute instructions correctly with one's money. If you value your money - seek out a credit union. Still waiting 2 weeks later for a $30.00 wire transfer fee credit. Yes, I've brought it to their attention. Customer service is useless.

Long time member - first time leaver

After being a member for many decades I have taken my banking elsewhere. When contacting the bank (on their app messaging platform) to ask for someone to contact me about my home line I was advised "It is best to discuss this with a specialist. Please reach out to our Home Loan Solutions Team directly on ... for assistance." Then when I did this the staff member had no idea of how to process my request. I had several calls to the bank in 2024 and all of them left me scratching my head as to whether I had even called the bank.
Communicating with the bank was difficult, the helpdesk were far from helpful. Everything just became too difficult and staff did not seem willing to help (I actually felt like I was disrupting the staff or asking stupid questions). Weirdly, the only thing that was easy was closing my accounts - I actually got someone who was knowledgeable and helpful.

I joined a credit union in 1970

I joined a credit union in 1970, which went through a number of mergers over the years, ending as CUA, which a few years back rebranded itself as GSB. Since that time multiple regional branches across QLD have been closed. A few weeks ago, my wife and I (retirees on the age pension, me in my 70's) were advised that our accounts (and membership) were being closed. Despite our request for a reason as to the closure, we were provided with a copy of the bank's 'terms and conditions' to sort out where we went wrong. A clear refusal to articulate the specific reason/s when we asked for this. I can only conclude we do not have enough money sitting in their bank to make us worthwhile. I can raise a complaint externally, but who would want to stick with an institution that stinks?

Great Southern Scam

Paid just under $400k over 20 years on $200k mortgage. As of today owe $213k with 17 year left. Asked where all the money has gone. Made complaint January last year, invited into head office January this year, witnessed lie upon lie and "TYPO'S" changed on statements and spread sheets. They closed complaint last week, defaulted the account for last 12 months (even though I kept up repayments) no notice of default received, cannot refinance with a
negative credit score. No answer to original complaint "own your home sooner" what is total repayments including extra weekly payments on average $500/week (and $100k deposit) over 20 years.
They will not answer this simple mathematics question with numbers just dishonest words of utter crap. Two heart attacks and held hostage after 20 years of head down, bum up work for nothing. Can't even take further as will not close complaint.
It begs the question! Named a bank but operates as a credit union, disgraced former Westpac CEO's GSB/CUA recruited to make new online banking software (about to roll out) named "CONSTANTINOPLE"
Stay away and if you already in get out of and while you can!

False claims

False claims! They claim on their website to clear foreign issued cheques within 8 weeks maximum. Don't believe it.

I deposited two government-issued bank cheques on separate dates. They first claimed they're having trouble communicating with the bank, then tell me the cheque will clear in 2 months to the date of deposit.

then told me both cheques are scheduled to clear on dates that is two months from deposit. Not 8 weeks. They maintained those are the dates.

I used their term deposit for six…

I used their term deposit for six months, there were issues with paying me interest and closing my account. They finally paid 3.3 percent instead of the 4.7 promised. I was never provided any documentation or explanation as to how they arrived at their figure.
I talked at length in person and on the phone. I was met with obfuscation and vague promises, eg a manager would call and explain and detailled breakdown would be emailled.
Nothing happened, no email, no managers call.
I strongly advise you, do not trust this bank.

I would give 0 if I could

I would give 0 if I could! Unreliable bank… Made a domestic transfer early today to pay for a car because we could not get a bank cheque from the branch. Promised multiple times (after 4 phone calls) that the transfer would be processed today. I called yet again, and another excuse was given. Here I am left stranded in a car dealership interstate with no car.
Next step will be transfer $$$$ to a bank that can deliver payments and provide accurate customer service.

Best bank ever…

We have been with GSB formally CUA for 38yrs, had no problem what so ever. I live in Melbourne & I find they are great, especially with their fraud. As for customer service it is not out sourced. Best bank ever.

Very poor customer service

I have been a customer for 35 years. They were great in the start but now have terrible customer service. Recently I had to speak to the call centre and was told that after 35 years they are not able to talk with me as they don't have my birthdate. It took 25 minutes for someone from the call centre to tell me he could not talk with me. I have talked to staff many times over 35 years. I now have to get 100 points id certified and send into them. I think the call centre is now outsourced to overseas as the people I talked to found it very difficult to talk with me. I am now moving to another that will guarantee me that their call centre is in Australia.
