HBO Max is the worst app
HBO Max is the worst app. It never has even a close idea of where I left off in a series. If you rewind the show the app hangs and you have to go all the way out and sign back in. I went on their site and did a review and it is now a lot worse all of a sudden.
I had a year subscription with HBOMAX
I had a year subscription with HBOMAX - after I cancelled, they still took $69 (per Apple transaction) because I did not cancel in time, and they still did NOT allow me to use the subscription even though it was for a year. Since then, I have canceled all subscriptions, including Amazon Prime. I HATE HBO and all those who are stealing from consumers!!!!!!!
UNACCEPTABLY BAD
Hands down the absolute worst streaming platform around. Unacceptably bad UX wrought with tech issues. It was bad when it first came out. Now it’s just outrageously bad.. I have no confidence they can get it together at this point. It’s 2025, to stay in the game you need to at least meet the minimum threshold of audio and video functioning simultaneously. This time when I cancel, I will not be returning. I encourage everyone to cancel at this point. If we all turn our backs, the decent programming will inevitably be picked up by better streaming platforms.
Horrible video quality.
My main problem with HBO Max is that unlike any other streaming site on the market, Max is simply the only one that has terrible video quality. I'm not talking about the buffering that happens in the beginning of a show, but the actual video quality you get when actively watching the show or film. After some quick reading I found out that the reason for this has to do with the way HBO Max calculates your internet connection. Supposedly if it thinks your connection is "slow" or "unstable" it lowers the video quality. The problem is that I have practically never in my life had this problem with other streaming services, specifically Netflix and Prime Video whose quality is perfectly fine as expected. There is simply something wrong with the way HBO Max calculates this and consistently gives blurry streaming quality. This problem persists even on the "Premium" paid plan, which frankly makes me feel scammed with the terrible image quality I get. This could all get resolved if they used the same calculation method or whatever as any other streaming service, or add the ability to manually choose the desired video quality to skip whatever algorithm HBO Max uses. The greatest shame of all this is the huge selection of so many great shows and films that are currently exclusive to Max that I want to watch are basically ruined by this.
If they ever fix this quality issue I will edit my review, until then I can't recommend HBO Max.

The app is dreadful. If you're watching a series, you'd better keep a notebook on hand to write down which episodes you've watched, because the app can't figure out how to do that. Somehow all the other streaming services can do this.

I made multiple attempts at trying to get back into my account. And, I ended up not getting in after a few hours of trying. I have had an account for years.
It is very difficult to get through on the phone. The lady was nice, but it is difficult. Now, I am locked out because I have made multiple attempts at trying to get in. Very sad the way I am treated. I am a paying customer. I am still locked out by the way. Now, going on 4 hours and still locked out.
Don’t buy it! Proper scam!
Don’t buy it! As soon as you have a subscription is game over for you! I’ve been battling an issue with the customer service team for over 3 months and their answer is just a macro without zero care for your problem or even trying to understand the issue.
I am paying for my subscription plus an add on for sports and what do I get? A proper “don’t care, don’t bother” from them. It’s an easy and simple “issue”, which makes it even sadder and shows the importance you have a as a customer. You’re just another dollar on their pocket.

Great Shows, Poor App Experience
Most of my favorite shows are from HBO, so I had high hopes for HBO Max. Sadly, the app is frustrating to use. It often buffers, disconnects, or signs me out. Glitches and freezes happen so often that watching becomes difficult. Sometimes it feels like certain users get hit with more problems than others. After too many crashes, I usually just give up trying to watch.

When I went to renew my mobile-only membership, it said it was no longer available or that the payment did not work (something went wrong message). However, it was available and I did get billed successfully. This trick almost worked on me, because I almost bought the more expensive plan thinking the cheaper plan was unavailable.
Don't Bother
App frequently disconnects or signs out. HBO seems to have some buyer's remorse regarding its deals with certain mobile carriers, because those are the only people havimg trouble. They do NOT want you to use the "connect with provider" option, it's a circus at least four times a week trying to connect, reconnect, sign back in, get it to recognize your provider, etc. Interestingly, ALL of the links,buttons, and functions used to pay them money or sign up work just fine.... they just don't want you using their service if it came with your phone plan. Hey, HBO.... nobody forced you to make those agreements, get over yourselves and grow up a bit.
