This is a poor review only because it is impossible to sleep in the rooms after a hot day. Today it was 33 celcius outside during the day and the room was incredibly hot at night. The window was built only to be tilted open a few inches - making it impossible to ventilate the room even though the air was cool outside. The experience was so bad that I left at 3 am to sleep at the office. No air conditioning is one thing. No fans are another thing. But to not even be able to fully open a window is ridiculous.

Most hotel reservations show entire months worth of availability. You will only tell me the availability on a specific date. If I just want to stay sometime with no particular date in mind, I have keep guessing time and time again to find an available date.

To clarify, when looking at a hostel it you do add dates before you search you are looking at an 'availability' and therefore will only be shown results if those dates are available. If you do not add dates in you will see the whole availability grid for all dates and be able to scroll to see what is available and when. Regards. Hostelling International.

It cannot be booked at all through the HI system because payment with cards cannot be initiated. However, I only managed to pay my membership fee using pay pall through HI system. Then I finished booking using my HI membership number through Swiss system for youth hotels.

Way cheaper!
I remembered while looking on booking.com that last time I stayed at a hi hostel in whistler the wifi password was BOOKDIRECT and that twanged in my brain when looking. Sure enough it worked out about 50 bucks cheaper going straight to HI rather than through the site. Good times :)

As a life-long member of youth hostels
As a life-long member of youth hostels, it was difficult for me to find the information that the prices were for non-members. It would be easier to charge extra @ the hostel for the non-members (along with local taxes, if applicable)
I'd also like the possibility to pay in full online, rather than having to deal with the complexity/uncertainty of debit/credit cards in foreign countries @ the hostel.
I was also hoping for a smartphone app, to accompany me on my travels, rather than having to rely on emails.
Otherwise, I appreciate the network immensely.

(Almost) everything as it should be
(Almost) everything as it should be: clean, modern/renovated, friendly, functional, perfect location. One cannot ask for more... except for one tiny thing: some hostels/hotels use sensitive detergents for washing the bed sheets, please do so as well for people like me, my eyes will appreciate not being swallen all over in the morning.
