Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the customer service, finding it unhelpful and difficult to reach a real person. They also encountered issues with the staff, describing issues with staff effectiveness and engagement. Customers frequently reported long waiting times and being cut off or passed between different teams, making it nearly impossible to resolve their queries. However, some customers also noted that when they did manage to connect with an agent, they found the staff to be knowledgeable, helpful, and professional, going above and beyond to assist them. These positive experiences often highlighted specific individuals who provided excellent service and resolved issues efficiently.

Double Standards whilst HMRC benefit from the capital !

A decade ago I owed money to HMRC. I was treated with contempt and received numerous threatening phone calls, threatening letters and home visits from their ‘goons’ who on one occasion threatened to remove my car which was essential for my work ?!
Since 2023 HMRC have refused to refund an overpayment of personal tax. Despite regular prompting from my accountant, tax refunds for 2023 and 2024 remain unpaid. Double Standards me thinks !

Absolutely useless

Absolutely useless, they are so happy with their web site that doesn't work, they don't answer the customer helpline line , their useless digital helper just redirects you to a web site page that doesn't work.

I've worked for 41 years paid NI since 1978 and some how the last three years of that work life I didn't pay full NI contributions.

So my state pension to receive maximum I have to pay money in amounting to over £2500 .

So I paid the first installment, there is no record on my state pension forecast of them ever recieving this and my state pension forecast has not altered .

HMRC expect me to pay more installments without any proof of received payments or without anyone to discuss the issue.

In truth I've worked and paid over 38years of full contributions so how is there a shortfall.

This is a bigger scandal than the post office debacle.

I don't trust HMRC calculation and they can't be contacted and their web site is less than useless.

Absolute scandal that such an important gov department is so poor.

Yours completely disgusted and annoyed

Derek Fraser.

Try again...

I have called HMRC several times recently, what I have found is that it seems 50/50 as to whether you have someone helpful & knowledgeable answer your call or not. If you get someone helpful, they are very good, if someone answers who can't even hold the phone to their mouth, is clearly not able to form any rapport with you and has English language challenges, hang up and try again.

Disgusting 'service' -I can't give them zero

For some reason only know to themselves they closed my company PAYE account, and created a new one, the moey payed to the original a/c is not showing on the new a/c. Trying to phone and sort it, I've spent hours on the phone the last call cost £33 and nothing said has been done.

Trying again today, after the unhelpful digital asistant decides it can't put you through to an operator as they are busy and cuts you off 😣😣

If that's not bad enough the industrial action is now into MAY - WTF is going on, they would be the first to chase for money

Fed up

You have purposefully designed a system to make it impossible for people outside the UK to confirm their identity for a tax refund. You also make it difficult to contact customer representatives with long waiting times. You're an absolute shitshow and only a revolution can bring you down.

Well if I could give no stars I would

Well if I could give no stars I would. What has happened to HMRC, 5 years ago they were one of the best organisations to deal with, now they are absolutely abysmal. I will not go in to details, as that would be boring. Spleen vented. Thanks

Got through within 3 minutes (at 11am)…

Got through within 3 minutes (at 11am) to a friendly and efficient agent who waited patiently while I tried to find information to provide HMRC. Query resolved immediately. HMRC is outstanding in terms of efficiency, courtesy and all round helpfulness both on the phone and on line. Having had to file taxes in another ‘highly developed’ country across the Atlantic for over 10 years, you can only compare with another tax authority to see how good the HMRC is in their service to the tax payer. Believe me, we are very, very fortunate.

Absolutely useless call centre

Absolutely useless call centre. Mixes up the tax years, unable to provide the required information yet becoming snappy and rude trying to educate us. A disgrace on public money. At least you had the chat option back in the days and you did not have to wait 90 minutes to talk to someone who didn’t wake up well in the morning.

I have been tryig to access my account…

I have been tryig to access my account for a year. But I can't cause my phone is changed n I can't get access code, when I ask trough email I get code putting in password changed wich I don't remember, so I go forgot password, they asking me user ID which I put then they sending code to my old phone. Spoke on the phone after 45 min wait , they told me that they can't help.
Can't do self assessment cos can't sign in.
Useless people workes there, there is no chance I can submit self assessment again. It is should of been easier , everything I did keep turning to sending code to my old number.
Horrible design, people seems have no idea about helping people at all.!!!!

Absolutely shocking service

Absolutely shocking service! When you finally get through after waiting on the phone- the people on the phone aren’t interested in helping you! The whole system is backwards in coming forward. You have all someone’s data regarding employment via the app/ tax info and still have to provide it. Quick to take your money- not quick in helping understanding why they are! The information is always complicated and over detailed.

Shocking service

Received x2 letters within a week of each other both having different information . Attempts made to contact HMRC to speak to someone to explain . First 2 phone calls after going through a number of questions taking approx 5 mins was told busy and unable to take the call and to phone back later. On the third attempt again a number of questions but this time was informed the wait time was around 30 mins. I was hold for one hour and 5 mins before I had to hang up to leave for an appointment . Absolutely shocking to say the least and I know they say there is plenty of useful information online but tax is not the most simplistic of things to understand in general and would make so much of a difference being able to speak to someone in person.

HMRC completely useless

I called HMRC as they have cocked up my Tax again. Waited for 1hr and 15mns for someone to answer, they answered and said Hello, I said Hello and they hung up. Just another way to ensure they keep my money as long as possible. Completely useless

HMRC demonstrates fantastically well…

HMRC demonstrates fantastically well how world class the British state is in being two faced.

Man landed on the moon back in the 60s with a 64kb computer but an organisation backed by the (apparently) government of the world's sixth largest economy can't automate PAYE correctly in the year 2025.

HMRC deliberately puts the 21,000 page tax burden on the tax payer...who is paying tax on their tax because trying to speak to a human being there has similar odds of being struck by lightning. I do wonder if I would prefer the latter than dealing with this web of obsufication that brings the government in £220m each year in fines. Which, in turn, the government recklessly waste on white elephants. What is the point??

Uk pension from overseas

Called from Australia regarding accessing my pension, absolutely amazing customer service from all departments. I had no idea who to speak to, however I was transferred 3 times to an agent and the service was applaudable. Thank you so much for making it simple.
