Barclays Unfair Dispute Handling – 7-Year Customer Lost
Title: Unacceptable Customer Service & Unfair Dispute Handling – 7-Year Customer Lost
I have been a loyal Barclays Old Navy Mastercard holder since 2017, opening the card specifically to manage clothing purchases for my autistic adult son who requires 24/7 care. Despite maintaining an 800+ credit score and paying my balance in full every month, my recent experience with Barclays’ dispute department customer service has been completely appalling.
The Merchant Dispute: In late January, I purchased a pair of boots on my card and returned them during the first week of February. On May 30th, I unexpectedly received a beat-up box from the merchant containing the returned boots, labeled simply: "returned old/damaged merch to customer."
When I contacted the merchant with photo evidence showing the boots were completely undamaged, they claimed to have no record of my initial return. They refused to honor the refund, blamed me for being outside the return window (despite them holding the item for over 3 months), and offered a useless 20% coupon instead.
Barclays’ Flawed Dispute Process: I opened a formal dispute with Barclays the next day. While I was on a two-week vacation in July, Barclays mailed a large envelope to my home containing paperwork stating they had validated the charge in favor of the merchant, giving me a strict 10-day window from the letter's date to submit additional evidence.
In today’s digital age, relying solely on standard postal mail for time-sensitive dispute decisions—without any email or digital notification—is unacceptable. Given current postal delays, the letter arrived with almost no time to spare, and by the time I returned home from vacation, the 10-day window had expired.
Even worse, the documentation the merchant submitted to Barclays was incorrect and easily proved wrong. The merchant claimed I never attempted a return on a pair of wedge sandals—an entirely different item I had purchased months later from a subsidiary—rather than addressing the boots in question. Yet, Barclays blindly accepted this irrelevant defense.
Dismissive and Rude Customer Support:
July 26: I called Barclays immediately upon my return. The agent was sympathetic, gave no mention of an expired deadline, and instructed me to fax all supporting evidence with my case number.
July 27: I spent hours preparing proof—including photos of the boots, the damaged shipping box, and the incorrect shoe documentation from the merchant—and faxed it over.
Follow-up Calls: When I called back, a representative rudely dismissed me, stating the case was closed due to the missed 10-day deadline. When I asked why the previous agent instructed me to fax documents without mentioning the deadline, he refused to answer or provide her name. When I requested a supervisor, I was told they were "busy." A callback from a supervisor the next day offered no resolution, and a subsequent agent who took my return call was even ruder.
To add insult to injury, on August 11, I received a letter dated July 31 stating, “If the disputed amount has not been paid, it will remain as a discrepancy on your credit report.” My bill was already queued to be paid in full via my bank.
Conclusion: Barclays showed zero regard for a long-standing, high-credit cardholder, completely failing to review clear merchant errors and hiding behind outdated UPSP mailing timelines. Between The merchant’s refusal to honor a legitimate return and Barclays’ condescending, unhelpful dispute department, both companies have permanently lost my business.

Absolutely ridiculous
Absolutely ridiculous.
I tried recently to switch to Barclays just because of the switch offer... Only way to register is to do it via the app... Obviously the app doesn't work.. I gave up.
Fast forward months later. I needed a new credit card. Clear score offered a good deal on Barclays, so I took it .. only completely forgetting that their customer service does not exist and their app doesn't work ...
I now have a credit card I can't use
And I can't apply for another one due to getting this one.
It's a joke.
In all the banks I've dealt with... This one is by far the worst...
And I was even with an American bank who responded online immediately and had a phone customer service you could get connected to in only a few minutes.
Barclays... Sort it out. Stop being tight and greedy and actually hire people to deal with customers...cause seriously at this rate you will end up being the bank with the lowest number of customers .
Oh and FIX THE APP!!!!
I could not log into my account and Barclays incompetence.
I could not log into my account this morning using my password. Incredibly I was asked to my account. Then followed a lot of activities including being photoed, and looking over my right shoulder then my left. Nothing doing so I phoned Barclays and talked to a very helpful lady who took me through the system again. Result, zilch. So in 4 days time I will receive a code by the GPO which means I can start all over again. This is wholly unacceptable. I have banked with Barclays for 70 years, my parents and grandparents did as well. So I will now consult Which and remove my accounts from Barclays and go elsewhere.
Rubbish system
Opened a current account on line to access the switch service with £200 switching reward. Turns out you only get the reward if you open the account with the App. I do not bank on my phone and have no intention of doing so, my laptop is better. When begining the process the site said I could open an account on line but it DID NOT say the switch bonus was not available if you do this. so I immediately made a phone call to Barclays to cancel the application. We all know that many of us switch bank accounts only to get the switch bonus, so why do Barclays exclude people who do not use Apps?
I fell into these people's hands
I fell into these people's hands, and I would have regretted my life if not for Conwildings.
Mortgage information is deliberately HIDDEN!
Absolute robbery. Tried to get further breakdown on how much of the monthly mortgage payments would be interest payments only to be told I have to CHOOSE a mortgage FIRST!?
Clearly crucial information is deliberately hidden from customers to prevent them from choosing the best mortgage

Could not pay money into my investment…
Could not pay money into my investment account. Tried calling for a total of over an hour and a half on all numbers including complaints number. No-one picking up. Tried another trading number, tried to transfer me - no-one picking up. Tried their chat option - came up with an error notification. No response.
This is supposed to be their investment wing where time is particularly of the essence. No facility for any level of urgency.
Used to be OK - now unfit for purpose. Utterly useless. Clear what they think of the customers.
Do not trust them with your money
Money was literally stolen from my account despite me not losing my card details anywhere. My card has never left my house and I haven't used it on any website - I use this account to transfer money between my own bank accounts.
Clearly Barclays lost my information and lied when confronted

The Worst Business Banking Experience – Avoid Barclays at All Costs!
I have never encountered a company as utterly incompetent and infuriating as Barclays. It’s hard to believe they’re even in business with the disgraceful service they provide. Barclays has wasted 13 days of my time with no resolution whatsoever. Their glossy ads and fancy marketing materials promise an easy, supportive and professional experience for small business owners. Don’t be fooled. This is a complete farce.
As a business owner myself of 40 years, I understand how crucial it is to have things handled quickly and professionally. I would be shocked if something as small as a name discrepancy slipped through the cracks for 13 days in any business I ran. This isn’t just a minor oversight—it’s gross negligence. The fact that Barclays couldn’t flag such a simple issue at the start and chose to waste my time for nearly two weeks shows a complete lack of attention to detail and respect for their customers.
After 13 days of waiting, they finally send me a response claiming that my name appears differently on my passport compared to Companies House. Seriously? 13 days to spot a simple discrepancy that could have been flagged from the start? I’ve been left hanging while they twiddle their thumbs, and I’m beyond furious.
Add my experience to the long list of dissatisfied customers. Just look at Trustpilot. You’ll find many angry customers that have received the same appalling service: endless delays, zero accountability, and a complete disregard for small businesses. Barclays claims they support local businesses, but the reality is they couldn’t care less about the time and money we lose trying to chase them down for answers.
I regret every second spent trying to deal with Barclays. If you're a small business owner, do yourself a favour and run far, far away from this shambles of a bank. It’s clear they have no idea how to handle customers or provide even the most basic of services.
Teriible security
Do yourself a favor - never ever trust your money to Barclays saving account. Their security is a joke. You literally saving money in your email. What they call MFA is not an MFA. As soon as someone has access to your email, you will loose everything. They don't track any fraud activity. To reset a password is piece of cake of hackers as soon as they know account number and dob.
If you have joint account and for example your spouse's email was hacked, hackers can add external account on his/her profile and transfer everything. Despite that this is a joint account , you won't receive any notification. It was a fortunate coincidence that we noticed that someone trying to create additional external account. If something happens after hours - you are on your own, no one to help from their side.
What is huge surprise for me that many online reviewers still putting them into top 5. Yes , they have a high yield BUT it's not worth it to risk everything.
SUCH A RIDICULOUS BANK AND NOT WILLING…
SUCH A RIDICULOUS BANK AND NOT WILLING TO REGISTER CUSTOMER COMPLAINT THOUGH. AN AGENT NYLLE TOLD ME THAT HE IS NOT GOING TO REGISTER COMPLAINT A RESOLVE EVERYTHING INTERNALLY
