Disappointed by Lack of Flexibility and Customer Care
I wish I could leave a positive review, but unfortunately my experience was overshadowed by the host’s refusal to accommodate a simple date change request. I reached out well in advance hoping to adjust my reservation, but was met with a flat “no”—no explanation, no willingness to help. It became clear that keeping the full payment was the priority, not providing a fair or flexible guest experience.
Plans can change, and good hosts understand that. I wasn’t asking for a refund—just to shift the dates. But instead of working with me, the host chose to stick rigidly to the cancellation policy, even though they easily could have rebooked the dates. Disappointing and short-sighted.
I’ve had many great stays on Airbnb with hosts who genuinely care about their guests. Sadly, this wasn’t one of them.
We will not be using Host Wise again…
We will not be using Host Wise again and would caution others to carefully consider their options before booking with them.
We originally reserved a one-bedroom apartment in Porto, close to the Outsite where the rest of our group was staying. Just as we were about to board our train from Lisbon, we received a message from Host Wise informing us that the apartment had been flooded due to an issue in the unit above and was now uninhabitable. They offered to relocate us.
The first alternative provided was a studio in a different city, nearly 30 minutes from our intended location. Given the size and distance, we declined. The only other option offered was a split stay, and while not ideal, we agreed out of necessity.
The first unit we were placed in was significantly smaller than our original booking. While technically a one-bedroom, it felt more like a converted studio. It lacked a washing machine, a feature we specifically needed and that had been listed in the original property. We requested a partial refund due to the downgrade and were told we would receive one after checkout. I also submitted a refund request through Airbnb for $300, which Host Wise declined, again stating the refund would be processed post-stay.
During the final week of the first accommodation, we were notified that the second property in the split stay was also now unavailable. Host Wise offered a new unit in Matosinhos, a town 45 minutes from our group. We were told it was a new property they had just started managing and would receive photos once available. While more spacious, the unit required air conditioning installation the day after our arrival. With no other viable options, we accepted the move.
Upon arrival, we noticed a persistent musty smell. The closet, refrigerator, and washing machine all had unpleasant odors. Tired of the constant issues, we chose to address these ourselves—cleaning and ventilating the space as best we could.
While we were away for a weekend trip, the A/C was installed. Upon our return, we experienced a complete power outage while trying to cook and do laundry. Although Host Wise provided assistance, we ended up resetting the circuit multiple times throughout our stay. It became clear the new A/C units were overloading the system, making it impossible to use basic appliances without tripping the power.
We inquired multiple times about reimbursement, especially given the added commute and inconvenience. Host Wise had initially indicated they would cover some of the additional transportation and food costs—up to €40 was eventually reimbursed, though our total out-of-pocket expenses exceeded €200. Despite repeated requests, we have yet to receive any compensation for the initial downgrade or disruption caused by the second relocation.
By the end of our stay, Host Wise had stopped responding to our messages entirely.
Given the multiple last-minute relocations, unlivable conditions, and lack of transparency around reimbursement, we cannot recommend this company. We hope others take these issues into consideration when choosing accommodations for their travels.
