This is not a legitimate .GOV.UK website – BEWARE

This is not a legitimate .GOV or .GOV.UK website, and PRECISELY the kind of website that we receive constant warnings NOT to visit — let alone to enter sensitive personal information.
There is no reason to trust this website, and I would recommend NOT entering sensitive private information here.

Wife received unsolicited email regarding this. No other notification, clear text unique security code in email, wants you to input personal information into web portal with a non .gov registered domain. No idea if this is legit or not, leaving well alone.
If this is legit, shame on the government for having YET ANOTHER SYSTEM when this could all be done behind the government gateway ID, which amusingly seems to now be replaced by government one login. Pick a system and use it.

Is it a SCAM? - it must be - yet it isn't

Everything about this website screams "SCAM - don't touch it with a barge-pole" at me. And yet it seems the to be the legit way that councils now fulfil their duty to check the eligibility of voters.
Cumulatively, it must be wasting years of people's lives looking this one on Scam identifying websites.
0/10 for inspiring Trust from the electorate.

Government-sanctioned phishing: statutory voter data collection via an easily spoofable .com

This platform is everything the NCSC tells the public to avoid.

You get an unsolicited email from a non-gov.uk address with your name on it, a deadline, a two-part "security code" and a link to a commercial .com website, which then asks for the names and nationalities of everyone in your house.

That's the basic anatomy of a phishing attack, and it's being used for official electoral business by over 250 UK councils.

A statutory democratic function handling the personal details of nearly every household in Britain has been quietly outsourced to a private company most people have never heard of, with no public debate and nobody accountable for the design, Because the site sits outside the .gov.uk system there's no reliable way for an ordinary person to check it's legitimate.

Councils know this full well, which is why so many of them publish pages reassuring residents it isn't a scam, and that tells you everything you need to know.

If you raise a concern you just get passed in circles: the council points at the supplier, the supplier points at its accreditations, but nobody owns the problem, this is echoed throughout government in the UK.

This isn't a theoretical risk either. Lookalike domains imitating the service have already been registered by third parties, so a criminal can clone the email, swap the link and harvest household data from people who've been trained by this very platform to hand it over.

Every year it teaches millions of people to click links in emails that look exactly like fraud, undoing the anti-phishing habits the NCSC and us cyber security professionals spend hours, days, weeks, months of time trying to build.

None of it is necessary either - Some councils already send these emails through GOV.UK Notify, so secure options clearly exist.

This problem has been flagged publicly for years and governments of every stripe have sat on their hands because as always, nobody takes charge.

Sticking statutory electoral correspondence on a generic .com is a choice that puts the supplier's convenience above public safety, and the fact it's still running in 2026 shows how badly government understands basic technology.

If you get one of these emails, don't click the link.

Type the address into your browser yourself, use the phone, text or paper options, or check directly with your council's electoral services first, or boycott it all together.

Website seems legit

I was not feeling comfortable giving information to this random website. But the process was fluid. Should be more appropriate domain name like gov.uk

People Will End Up Losing Their Votes as These are Like Scam Emails

Received an unsolicited email asking to click on a link where I would be asked to input personal details. This just screams scam and goes against everything people are told to do to protect themselves from fraud. I almost put it in spam then tried to verify it. There is nothing on my local council official website whatsoever to confirm this is legit. The email says click ANOTHER link to verify - again, not safe. I then found these reviews on Trustpilot all saying the same - this method is causing confusion for voters and should be abandoned. It could cause people to lose their right to vote.

Screams "SCAM!" Amateur for such an important task.

What an amateur setup for such an important task! Electoral services should not be sending such dodgy looking direct links to people by email. Any link to a third party site should ONLY be via the official electoral services web page, councils should not be sending us direct links to 3rd parties. I almost just deleted the email, it screamed "DODGY!" so much. Fearing a £1000 fine for not updating my details I had to waste time investigating just in case.

The domain/website is legit

The domain/website is legit. The council websites link to that address/domain to update your electoral details online.

As others have pointed out, it looks a bit dodgy. But it is the one you have to use.

Annual canvass site is registered as…

Annual canvass site is registered as used from Newham local authority (my borough) and when you visit newham.gov.uk_council_annual-canvass they acutally explain that householdresponse.com is their chosen site to register voting data. It's legit.

Looks suspicious

Looks suspicious - Arrived with Scam terminology through my letterbox -
1. Cheap envelope
2. Thick paper - pretending to be from my local council who would never use such expensive paper
3. Scary wording like: DO NOT IGNORE
4. Using a .com instead of .co.uk address
5. 4 (Four) QR Codes we are told to be suspicious of
Worried about this.

Not good enough to trust this

I completely agree! What a bizarre domain address to choose in these days of phishing! I still can't trust this given a quick search on a whois site. I know it's outsourced, but it HAS to be via a gov.uk website to even redirect this. I refuse to submit my details based on this.

Appears dodgy but is legit

At first the email appears like a good phishing attempt but it is legit. I went on the NY council website and the household voting page signposts to the same website. I recommend doing the same just in case but it is trustworthy.

Genuine site, safe to use

Received email asking for re-confirmation our household’s eligibility to vote. I have to agree with others — it gave me pause because it looked dodgy! Looking back though, I’ve been receiving these emails annually since 2021, and my partner got the exact same email at the same time. Safe to proceed. Quick and easy once you’re there. Minus a star for wasting my time while I checked its authenticity.
