Il Marchesato is a family Company founded in 1978 in Saluzzo, a tiny town in the North West of Italy, not far from Turin.
The name is after the old name of the area, and it means “The land of the Marquis”, a common way in the ancient times to define places according to the nobles in charge. From the beginning Il Marchesato makes hand made luxury umbreallas, walking sticks and shoehorns with a vast array of high quality materials.
Every single piece is mounted by hand, precious textiles cut by hand, sticks and handles are worked by the family members and porcelain handles painted by local artists working with the Company since longtime. Even the top notches and runners of the umbrellas are mounted and tested internally one by one.

my package is being held hostage unless I pay $75 in import tax. This should have been disclosed at point of sale. All they say was free shipping! But it's not really fair if you have to pay $75. cost should have been absorbed by the seller. bad business

Our website states “Free Shipping”, which means that we covered the transportation cost from Italy to the United States. You did not pay any shipping fee for the express delivery service.
Import duties and taxes are a completely separate matter. These are charges imposed by U.S. customs authorities on imported goods entering the country and are not costs collected, decided, or retained by us.
As clearly specified on the cart page, during checkout, on our Delivery Rates page, and again in the order and shipping confirmation emails, shipments outside the European Union may be subject to customs duties and import taxes depending on the destination country.
As an Italian artisan company producing handcrafted umbrellas and walking sticks and shipping worldwide, we cannot absorb or pre-calculate these charges because they vary depending on the customs regulations of each country.
We therefore believe it is unfair to describe this as “bad business,” considering that the information regarding possible import duties was communicated throughout the purchasing process and that your order received free express shipping from Italy.
We always recommend carefully reading and understanding the purchasing conditions when placing international online orders. In this case, the information regarding customs duties was communicated with complete transparency throughout the entire process.

Weather umbrellas
Weather umbrellas, I have great collection, walking sticks, your exquisite design is a showstopper. I live in NY and LA. It rarely rains in LA, so my umbrellas are mainly on the East Coast. No one here in NYC seems to have these works on art. I am stopped constantly and I’m an always proud to mention your company.I am your poster child. I’ll tell you a short story. A few years ago I was walking on 3rd Avenue in NYC. The wind came out of no where and for a moment I was Mary Poppins! Your umbrella lifted me a city block. It is strong and well made and I see love a pride in your creations.

Great selection and quality
Great selection! Much better quality umbrella than the garbage made in China.
The only down side was the $88 tarrif fee I had to pat to DHL. This is not the fault of il Marchesato.

Difficult folding mechanism, parts of umbrella falling off...
A beautiful and finely crafted folding umbrella, however very difficult to handle, esp. with enormous effort and strength needed to close it. Plus, the ornamental part on the top of the handle got detached and fell off quickly, which is inexcusable given the price of the item.

Regarding the folding mechanism, our umbrellas are handcrafted with reinforced premium frames and high-quality mechanisms designed to ensure durability and stability over time. For this reason, the closing mechanism can initially feel firmer compared to standard mass-produced umbrellas.

The additional $120 was not a charge applied by us after shipment, but import duties and taxes requested by United States customs authorities upon arrival. These are government charges that we do not collect, determine, or retain in any way.
We always aim to be fully transparent with our international customers. For this reason, information regarding possible customs duties for orders shipped outside the European Union is clearly stated on our Delivery Rates page: Delivery Rates
, during checkout, and again in the order confirmation email. Orders shipped outside the EU may be subject to import duties, taxes, and customs clearance requirements imposed by the destination country.
For this reason, we believe a one-star review based on taxes imposed by the buyer’s own country does not fairly reflect the quality of our products or the service we provided.

Tried to charge me tarrif and shipping fees when package arrived in US through DHL near $100. Unfortunately just another example of dishonest and scammy business practices which are so common. You're welcome to pass the cost through or eat it but you're not welcome to scam ppl :(

First of all, there are no hidden charges whatsoever. Any possible import duties, taxes, or customs clearance fees for shipments outside the European Union are clearly communicated in advance on our Delivery Rates page, during checkout, and again within the order confirmation email.
These charges are not created, requested, or retained by us. They are determined exclusively by the customs authorities of the destination country. For shipments entering the United States, any duties or tariffs are established by U.S. authorities, not by our company.
As we ship internationally to many different countries every day, it would be impossible to include a single generic customs cost in the price of our products, since regulations and fees vary from country to country.
For this reason, describing our business as “dishonest” or a “scam” is entirely inaccurate and unjustified.
