dodgy money management

In addition to the fraudulent way they handle membership renewals, I can also say that their money management policy is less than transparent. The entry fee raised from basic members is supposedly used to self-finance local community activities, but the reality is that event organizers are unclearly invited to take the cash left over at the end of the evening (a sort of don't ask, don't say). InterNations only cares about ensuring that the price for basic (non-albatross) members is high enough, so as to get more people to become albatross members or agree on a trial period. Then they're stuck in automatic renewal with no notification.

Dear David,

Thank you for your review and feedback.

Event contributions are managed by our Ambassadors to cover costs such as venue fees, materials, welcome drinks, name tags, or any extras such as food, a DJ, or live music. Any remaining funds stay within the community and are reinvested in improving future events. InterNations does not make a profit from the entrance fee.

Regarding the memberships, our Albatross Membership renews automatically to ensure uninterrupted access. The automatic renewal system is clearly displayed during the check-out process, in your invoices, on your Membership Page, and even in our Terms and Conditions.

We would be happy to review your case and answer any additional questions. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Support Team anytime!

Money Withdrawn Without My Permission After Deleting My Card Information

I had a very disappointing experience with InterNations.

I signed up on their website just to explore the platform and started a free trial of the Albatross Membership. I entered my card details only for that purpose — not to authorize any payment or subscription.

A short time later, I deleted my card information from the site, thinking this would prevent any charges. However, after the trial period ended, money was withdrawn from my account without my knowledge, consent, or even a message from my bank.

When I contacted InterNations, they refused to issue a refund, claiming that the membership renews automatically after the trial. I find this policy misleading and unfair, especially since I had already removed my payment details.

It is unacceptable that a company can process a payment after the card information was deleted. This raises serious concerns about data privacy and payment authorization. I have since blocked my card to prevent further charges.

Dear Meltem,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’re truly sorry to hear about your experience and understand how upsetting unexpected charges can be.

To clarify, our 30-day free trial for the Albatross Membership automatically renews into a paid subscription at the end of the trial period, as outlined during the checkout process, on your Membership Page, and in the confirmation email received about your free trial. This allows members to continue enjoying the benefits without interruption, but it can, of course, be cancelled at any time before the renewal date.

Please rest assured that we do not store or process payment data directly; all transactions are handled securely by our certified payment provider, in full compliance with data protection regulations and German law.

We completely understand your concern and would be happy to review your case further. Please contact our Support Team directly so they can take a look and assist you.

Deceptive Subscription and not a useful platform

I signed up for a paid membership trial as most things are inaccessible without one, and tried to attend an event.

As the events are generally community based, it really depends on the city and who is organising them. I did not find the platform useful as there were few events.

Cancelling the membership was then difficult and I ended up paying for the full year at 97€. It seems that it is impossible to get any sort of refund from this company.

It appears that the a good amount of membership comes from people who unintentionally signed up.

Although not a scam, definitely predatory business practices and not a very useful community in general.

Dear Josh,

We’re sorry to hear that your experience with InterNations didn’t meet your expectations, and we appreciate you sharing your feedback.

Event availability can indeed vary from city to city. Activities can be organized by local members. As a premium member, you can help build up your community by organizing activities. Additionally, we’re working to expand event offerings and support our Ambassadors and Consuls in building vibrant communities worldwide.

We understand your frustration regarding the membership renewal. Our Albatross Membership is a subscription that renews automatically unless cancelled before the renewal date, as stated during sign-up, in our Terms and Conditions, and in the confirmation email you have received upon starting the free trial. We encourage you to reach out to our Support Team so we can review your case individually.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.

Money-Hungry Mediocre Organization

Not only are the content and services of this organization mediocre, but WORSE, is their money-hungry membership policy. I signed up for a Free Trial of their "Albatross" membership and informed them long before the renewal date of my desire to terminate my membership. Still, they CHARGED ME!
After I complained online, they said I only "enquired" about canceling my membership and didn't follow their instructions about HOW to cancel. Bullshit!
Since they WOULD NOT REFUND MY MONEY, THIS IS MY ONLY RECOURSE!!!!

Internations GmbH Blocked/Banned me the…

Internations GmbH Blocked/Banned me the third time. already because they would like me to avoid to share my ideas how to improve their community webservice or they would like to keep their human ressources on a dogchain, instead of answering to customer recommendations in a human manner. They use human resources without paying them to generate revenue for the bosses. Community Support, Consuls, Ambassadors, No one get's paid from the Albatross members payments, and the Albatross members if they try to be NORMAL and Politically Correct are kicked out of Internations.org and the money is not refunded. I have two occasions and Internations.org is approximately 200 USD/EUR richer for being able to consume more human resources by marketing. Actually, the .org subdomain is misleading, it is a PROFIT oriented GmbH and not a gGmbH. They have more than 1 Million human ressources who fell in their trap already. I wish and I will pay with all the non yet paying customers of Internations GmbH that someone like BakerMc Kenzie or PwC to makes a real professional audit for Internations, so Internations will get improved and stops that block behaviour just because they prefer to consume human ressources instead of watching their blockchain wallets.

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective and for providing us with details.

To clarify, our moderation and membership policies are in place to ensure that our community remains welcoming and respectful for all members. We fully support constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement. It is valuable for us that we continue to improve, but we also take action if discussions or behavior violate our community guidelines. These are in place to protect all the members in our communities.

Regarding volunteer roles such as Ambassadors and Consuls: these members choose to contribute their time to help organize local activities and build connections within their communities. Their efforts are deeply appreciated, and participation is entirely voluntary.

We also want to note that InterNations GmbH is a private company based in Germany. While our goal is to foster meaningful global connections, we understand your concern about clarity and will take your comments about transparency seriously.

If you would like us to review your specific case or discuss any unresolved issues, please reach out directly to our Support Team so that we can assist you further.

Escaped before being scammed, unlike so many others here

I only just created an account and was immediately flooded with marketing emails, including numerous “DM messages” that were actually automated engagement messages rather than real human interactions. These inbox messages were trying to upsell me to a paid subscription before I had even had a chance to even use the service.

The website itself looks primitive and dated — more like something built by an insurance company in the early 2000s than a modern community platform.

After this experience, I checked Trustpilot and found a striking pattern: a cluster of 5-star reviews praising the “amazing support,” and a much larger group of 1-star reviews describing predatory, unauthorised yearly subscriptions and serious difficulties cancelling, obtaining refunds, or reaching support. That pattern makes the 5-star reviews look suspiciously like astroturfing intended to offset legitimate complaints.

When I tried to delete my account, the site repeatedly threw up error messages saying I was being “rate limited,” whatever that means. I did eventually manage to delete my account — but I’m relieved to have escaped before losing money. Phew. Dodged a bullet there.

Dear Steve,

We’re sorry to hear that your first impression of InterNations wasn’t a positive one. We really appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed feedback.

The messages you received were from Sophia, our automated welcome guide designed by the InterNations team to help new members get started, discover local communities, and make the most of their experience. We completely understand if you prefer not to receive her messages; they can be deleted at any time.

Thank you also for your thoughts on the website design. We’re continuously working on updates to improve both the look and usability of our platform, and your feedback helps us prioritize those efforts.

They don’t even deserve a star!

They don’t even deserve a star!
I’m extremely disappointed with InterNations and their unethical handling of inactive users. I accidentally subscribed for a one-month trial, thinking it was a gift, and immediately reached out for help — yet they refused to refund me, despite multiple requests and clear proof that I never used the service.

It’s shocking that a platform that promotes itself as a global community takes advantage of accidental renewals and inactive members just to collect subscription fees. They rely on users overlooking small print and offer no flexibility or understanding when contacted — even though many other reputable companies issue refunds for such honest mistakes.

This experience made me realize that InterNations is more interested in exploiting technical oversights than building genuine connections or trust. I strongly urge others to think twice before entering their payment details — once they charge you, there’s no way back, even if you never used their services. What seemed like a friendly global community turned out to be a disappointing scam-like experience.

Discrimination

I've applied to this group several times over a number of years. I'm rejected every time. Any reputable organization would give people the *actual* reason they are rejected but not this group! They talk about reviewing the "application". What application? It's a couple of questions asking where you're from, what languages you speak, where you live and how old you are. Given that I've lived in different places (at home and abroad) when I've applied, it can't be because of my location. The only conclusion I can come to is ageism. They must be looking for really young people and we are older. Whenever organizations won't give you a concrete reason for declining your "application", it's because of some kind of discrimination. Seems I dodged a bullet here.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS - terrible dealing with the subscriptions

As many have written already, I had a similar experience - engaged with their 1-month promo period, and then they informed me without any prior notice that they had charged me for the whole year extension. As there were insufficient funds on the credit card I provided, they've issued an invoice for me. I contacted the support to cancel the invoice (there is an EU law to provide a refund for unpersonalized services without any explanation -they even have this in their T&C) and terminate the services, but today I got refused with the explanation "14 days are calculated from the moment the trial begins".

Also, the invoice they issued had the due date the same as the day of issue. I have never seen that shame across the EU with the digital services!

For those who want to join me with the legal procedure, please show your interest by signing this form form dot jotform dotcom/252714845574364
Let's end this together!

Dear Andrei,

Thank you for taking the time to write the review. We really appreciate the feedback.

We operate on an automatic renewal system. Upon starting the free trial, the automatic renewal was mentioned on the checkout page and during the upgrade, you selected the subscription period you would like to have after the free trial ends, if the subscription is not cancelled. Once your free trial begins, we send an email confirming the start of the free trial, email which also contains information about the day your trial ends and how much you will be charged.

You can cancel your free trial anytime without losing the premium benefits. The 14-day cancellation period does not apply after a free trial has ended and you've been charged; instead, this period applies to subscriptions starting from the date the free trial began, when your account was switched from Basic to premium membership.

Should you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Support Team anytime!

Horrible

Where do I start? They want way too much information when signing up. You immediately get spammed by men. There are very few good events. It is impossible to delete your account (to the point of the page actually not working and after trying a number of times getting the message I have been banned from trying any further... Banned? Banned from deleting my own account??). And there is literally no way of contacting them to sort this out.

Expat Fantasy

"InterNations" : A Cheap Euphemism to Deny an Uncomfortable Reality.

The insistence of the relocation industry and platforms like InterNations on using the term "expat" is not a simple semantic distinction. It is a cheap and deliberate euphemism designed to hide an uncomfortable truth: that these individuals, no matter how much they travel with a powerful passport and a contract in dollars, are, in essence, migrants.

The difference does not lie in their condition, but in their privilege. While a Syrian fleeing war is a "refugee," a Honduran seeking work is an "illegal immigrant," an American or European professional moving by choice is an "expatriate." This linguistic hierarchy serves to perpetuate a system of classism and racism where human mobility is valued according to the nationality and bank account of the person moving.

But the reality is that, stripped of that administrative and economic privilege, they are as vulnerable as any other migrant. Their legal status depends entirely on a job that can be terminated. Their support network shrinks to other foreigners in their same bubble. Their understanding of the country they inhabit is superficial and filtered through the comfort of their enclave. The day their company decides to cut costs, they will face the same immigration bureaucracy, the same uncomfortable questions, and the same potential deportation as anyone else.

The "expat" fantasy is to believe that their mobility is a chosen lifestyle, and not a form of migration. It is a term that allows them to deny their own vulnerability and, more seriously, to distance themselves from the struggle and reality of the millions of non-privileged migrants with whom they share a city, but whom they will never see at their cocktail parties or in their exclusive Facebook groups.

Expat Insider is the newsletter of this fantasy. A ranking that celebrates the privilege of a few while completely ignoring the global migratory reality, which is, by definition, a phenomenon of inequality, exploitation, and, above all, a shared vulnerability that the term "expat" cowardly attempts to deny.

I responded to a guy and then realised he was a creep looking to connect for the wrong reasons. I told him I would block him and not respond to any of his messages. I didn't know how to block him and Federico responded to my request for help and told me how to do it. It seems that occasionally we get messages from creepy guys.
