Don’t get scammed at Johnson Cadillac
Complaint:
In March 2024, I visited Johnson Cadillac in Budd Lake, NJ to purchase a “Certified” used Cadillac. I was told the vehicle was fully certified under Cadillac’s 172-point checklist, and that certification was a key reason I should buy from them instead of a less expensive, lower-mileage competitor’s vehicle.
I signed paperwork, provided a $10,000 deposit, and was assured the car only needed cosmetic work (scuffed rims repainted and a taillight replaced). I was told it would be ready in 24–48 hours.
Instead, while the car was in their possession, serious mechanical problems were discovered:
• A hanging/sagging strut
• A bent control arm
• A need for a specialized front-end alignment
All three of these items are part of Cadillac’s official certification checklist, yet they had already labeled the car “Certified” and used that to justify the higher price.
When I confronted management, I was told Johnson Cadillac did not have the equipment to check front-end issues, and that no cars leaving that location were actually checked for these items. That statement directly contradicts Cadillac’s certification standards and raises major safety concerns.
After weeks of delays and repeated calls, I eventually received my deposit back, but only after significant frustration and wasted time.
My concerns are:
• Johnson Cadillac sold a vehicle as “Certified” when it had not passed the certification checklist.
• The problems discovered were serious safety issues that could have endangered a buyer if they had driven the vehicle home immediately.
• If these practices are common, then other customers may also have unknowingly purchased uncertified, unsafe vehicles while paying extra for the “Certified” label.

Resolution Sought:
I request that Johnson Cadillac be investigated for its certification practices, that customers who purchased vehicles under similar circumstances be notified, and that any vehicles sold as “Certified” be reinspected by a third party at the dealership’s expense.
