Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 95 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers reported significant issues with the vehicles, including poor build quality, old models, and numerous defects such as non-working stoves, blocked sinks, and missing items. Reviewers frequently encountered mechanical problems like faulty brakes, non-functional heaters, and issues with electrical systems, which often led to breakdowns and ruined trips. The customer service was widely criticized for being unhelpful, unresponsive, and lacking follow-through, with many feeling that management did not take responsibility for the problems. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied with their experience, noting friendly staff, easy pick-up and drop-off, and comfortable vehicles that were well-equipped and easy to drive. Some also appreciated the design and agility of certain campervan models, finding them suitable for their travel routes.

Don’t spend youre money on JUCY!!

Don’t spend you’re money on JUCY!!! We were very disappointed about Jucy. We had high expectations, but non of them came true. In Christchurch we picked up our van. We had to wait the whole day to get the van, it was not ready they said. There were 6 other people waiting for their van that day. The umployees were rude and stressy.

By time when we got the van it was not well cleaned, very old and a lot of thing were broken. We did write an E-mail to Jucy about our complains and issues. But it took a few days when we got an answer. They did not come up with a proper solution, only that we can go to a cleaner. But we cleaned the van ourselves already.

In the last week after a lot of emailing (we had the van for five weeks) they told us we can go to a repairer. And they said that we could buy a new chair and gassburner ourselves. (They were also broken). We didn’t do that because it would take us a lot of time. (We did survive it already for four weeks….)

Besides all this we got a little accident with a another vehicle. We called the Jucy emergency number directly (many times) and they didn’t pick up the phone. After emailing we got an answer back the next day.

So if you would love to hire a broken, gross and very old van from a company that you cannot reach and with a lots of waiting time : THEN BOOK A JUCY! HAVE FUN……

Managed without principles and money grabbing

Van is nice modern and comfortable. Some mechanical issue but nothing major. Dealing with the company if you have any issues or changes is a different story. Jucy is impossible to reach/talk to a person in call or email. Sent around in circles on auto call with no one picking up and emails left unanswered unless you continuously follow up or try reach through other channels. This already starts any interaction if you are able to get through eventually in a very frustrated manner. Rented van for 10 day period. Worked very hard cleaning thoroughly in the last days. Including emptying all the tanks, scrubbing cassete compartment and cleaning out cassete. On handover we were then charged for alleged "tanks not emptied". On finally reaching them in call, received a dismissive, argumentative and repetitive response from rep. Refusal review our perspective and repeating the same response "tanks were not emptied" and deteriorated into argumentative back and forth with unyielding stance on the matter. They have then sent some proof of them emptying a cassete timestamped a day after the charge. The fact that they fabricated proof and implied that I am lying about the work I put in cleaning and emptying. This fabrication of proof is unprincipled business practice and scammy. It's not so much the money or the work we put in cleaning but principle of them desperately resorting to unfounded money grabbing tactics on customers already paying multiple thousands of AUD for what's meant to be a holiday experience and receiving this sort of treatment. Left a bitter taste and no recourse.

3 week rental Jan-Feb 2025

3 week rental Jan-Feb 2025. Pick up went badly - booked to pick up 9:30am didn't get van till 4pm Staff in Christchurch tried their best but understaffed & overworked Van had numerous issues including mechanical problems but no replacement available so had to nurse it through till end of rental. Staff in Auckland also overworked & understaffed. Post COVID Jucy has grown too fast & can't keep up with demand. Vans not getting proper checks & fixes before being sent back out. Rented from them in 2013 as well but 2025 definitely a worse experience & wouldn't recommend them until they've fixed staffing & servicing issues.

Wouldn't book with them again

Long wait both to drop off and pick up, echoing what others have said understaffed and kept asking for updates when picking up (as we had a tour booked and needed to leave) and no updates and overhead it was because there was mould in our van. Fridge absolutely stank as well, buttons missing from curtains, really old hard to drive automatic and generally didn't seem to care at all when we gave feedback in person and wouldn't do anything for us or offer some compensation when we complained because we didn't complain on the day it happened (even though we were then in a rush because of the delays!). Overheard a poor guy had been waiting 4 hours with his family in there for his van when we dropped ours off and staff didn't really do much to help. Badly run operation, van was OK on the road and grand to sleep in but couldn't keep anything in the fridge because of the smell transferring to items in there too! Would never go with them again, so spend your money on a better quality service company!

I rented an RV from juicy

I rented an RV from juicy. When I arrived it took 45 minutes just to get out the door as they did not track my deposit paid on their accounting system.
During the trip there were several issues including: empty gas bottles in the van so no working appliances, the shower door fell off while driving, the fridge was not working, the gas stove was broken and I had to spend a few hours at a service centre to repair it. The cleanliness was questionable, all the locks on the outdoor key access locks were nearly impossible to open, the air conditioning was only intermittently working and the reverse camera was impacted so not working well. I have followed up several times for compensation and a month later they are now ignoring my emails for resolution.

Absolutely Disgraceful

Absolutely Disgraceful – Avoid This Company at All Costs!

If I could give zero stars, I would. Our experience with this company was an absolute nightmare from start to finish, and their treatment of my family has been nothing short of appalling.

We rented a camper from their Cairns branch in early January, expecting a smooth and enjoyable trip. Instead, we were handed a faulty, unsafe vehicle that was completely unfit for purpose. The bed was broken, the toilet was unusable, and critical fittings were missing or incorrectly installed. We had no choice but to sleep on the couch for multiple nights, despite my aunt being a recovering cancer patient. The stress and discomfort this caused her were completely unacceptable.

When the bed first broke, we were forced to wait hours for a mechanic, missing an entire day of our holiday. The so-called “repair” lasted less than 48 hours before the bed broke again, leaving us stranded and forced to divert all the way to Brisbane—a destination that was never in our itinerary—to exchange the camper. Despite this massive inconvenience, we were still charged for tolls and fuel for the journey that was only necessary due to their faulty vehicle!

Their customer service was disgraceful—rude, dismissive, and unwilling to help. It took hours on the phone just to get basic assistance, and every step of the way, they refused to take responsibility. When we finally returned the camper early because the replacement was of lower quality and completely unsuitable, the Sydney branch supervisor was shocked at how we had been treated.

Now, after weeks of back-and-forth emails, the company is refusing to pay us the compensation we are legally entitled to. Instead, they have told us to take them to court if we want to recover our costs. This company ruined a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my family, and their refusal to provide any real remedy under Australian Consumer Law is disgusting.

Do yourself a favor—DO NOT book with this company. Their vehicles are unsafe, their service is atrocious, and they will leave you stranded and out of pocket rather than take responsibility for their failures. Spend your money elsewhere and avoid this scam of a business!

Sadly a really bad experience

We rented a Jucy crib van to travel around Australia. Only two days after we got the van the front deck exploded on the highway. We called Jucy right away but it took at least 2 hours before they picked up the phone. They made a truck come to put the spare deck on wich also took a while and when they got the spare tire on it was flat. It took more than 4 hours before we got back on the road again. To get a new spare tire we had to drive to a mechanic and wait for one and a half our before they had fixed it.

A few days later the cooler stopped working and our food got bad so we had to throw most of it out. Also the air condition switched between hot and cold air which was annoying when it was really hot outside. Our gps also went out a lot of times. We contacted Jucy to get them to do something but they couldn’t help in a few days so they said we could buy some ice cubes for the cooler until they could help. We had a hard time reaching them after this.

Our bedsheets where then starting to get a bit disgusting so we wanted to wash them and we knew that Jucy would do that for us. So we contacted them and what they had forgot to tell us was that there were only a few places that could be done. When we asked them we were not at all near any of the places so it was not possible to get fresh sheets. We think that it is something they should inform us about before we start driving.

Due to the very bad weather in Airlie Beach today we wanted to get away and drive the 8 hours to cairns. Suddenly it when we were driving the car started to smell burned. The speeder stopped working and smoke came out from the motor cooler. We called Jucy for assistance but it took us up to an hour. We did not know if it was safe to stay in the car so we were out in the rain that hour.

When we reached Jucy they sensed a man to check the car. He arrived after one more hour and said that the car battery could explode and that we should not drive any further but wait for a towtruck to pick us up. But due to the bad weather there was flooding so no one could get to us. We used 3 hours talking to every Jucy member and every time they hung up we needed to wait for 20-30 minutes before they answered. They told us different things and it was all very confusing. In the end a man told us we had to sleep in the van by the highway with cars and trucks driving fast by. We did not feel safe at all but there were no other options. A few hours later a woman crew member of Jucy that we had spoken with a couple of times felt so bad for us that she got a man picking us and our van up and driving us to a motel. We just think that it is weird because all the other Jucy people told us there was nothing to do.
That day we used over 7 hours in a broken van by the highway in rain.
We knew when we bought the van that it would not be perfect but it was cheap. It had a lot of scratches and stuff but we did not think about complaining about it. But all the other things just made the experience so bad. This was just not worth it.

Understaffed unorganised experience, however great time with camper

The van was absolutely perfect and we had a fab time exploring New Zealand HOWEVER the company were awful to deal with, massive wait times picking the van up (over 5 hours) with limited communication. They are severely understaffed and this shows through the staff that are working there currently. We were lucky to not have any problems with the van when we had it but many other reviews say they did and the company didn’t help at all, we read this in a review book which we noticed had since been removed when we returned the van. Was given a very basic show around of the van as they didn’t have the correct paperwork to give us, was just told to look online for anything else but couldn’t find anything that was of any help. We went away during the 5 hour wait and was given a contact number on a piece of paper. On back of paper was a whole transcript of another clients confidential information, the issues he faced and the amounts he was charged for said issues. Had to pay out for ad blue twice costing appx £50 and had to wait until van return for this to be deducted from another bill which was an additional cost per mile that you aren’t made aware of until van pick up. Service requires a top down review being one of the biggest for motor rentals in New Zealand.

Hey Tyler,

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We’re glad you had a great time exploring New Zealand, but we’re really sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with service. We understand your frustration with the long wait times and communication gaps—this is not the standard we aim for. Regarding the RUCS fee, it’s a NZ government charge that is advertised during booking, and in our T&C's but we’ll make sure to review how this is communicated more clearly. We truly appreciate your input and will work on improving our service for future customers.

Warning - stay away from this company

Warning – stay away from this company if you want to make it to your destination!

Our vehicle broke down on a Sunday, and when the mechanic realised that the vehicle could not be repaired, it was towed away. We were left stranded by the side of the road, with all our luggage, in a remote part of New Zealand. After hours on hold with Jucy, they promised to get back to us immediately to help us with a solution. They didn’t. We only heard back from them after 24 hours and we had no way of getting in contact with them again as it was after hours. Do they want their customers to sleep in the ditch?! We finally saw no other way than to rent another vehicle to get to our accommodation for the night. Now they refuse to reimburse us for the additional expenses caused by their poorly maintained vehicles and non-existent customer support. We have been travelling around Australia and New Zealand to do research since October, and have never experienced a more unprofessional company that obviously do not care about their customers safety.

Bed bugs and no air-conditioning!

We hired a Jucy 6 berth motor home for our family of 4 to drive down the Qld coast. We had issues with the vehicle from day 1 and noticed beetles and small bugs in the overcab bed and around the kitchen table fold-out bed on night 1. Initially we didn't think too much of it and just removed the bugs and searched around all the beds - removing all the beetles we found. In the mean time we had the following problems:

- AC issues (we sweltered through drives)
- Cruise control not working intermittently
- Cabin door lock not working
- Toaster and cook top smoking - so we could not cook inside
- Toilet door loose and opening when turning/driving

Then a few days into our trip, we came out in bites and skin rashes and had to get medical attention and creams to treat ourselves for bed bugs / beetle allergies. We again searched the motor home and found more beetle larvae and beetles that we photographed and removed.

Throughout our journey we reported all of our issues, but Jucy was unable to coordinate repairs / cleaning or replacement due to a number of public holidays and a long weekend. They expected us to travel hours out of our way, to sacrifice a day of travel to facilitate repairs after the weekend, but we were on a tight schedule to drive 1000s of kms over 5 days and would have missed our flight. They were not willing to have a technician meet us on site at a stop over.

We considered staying in a hotel, but had already paid so much money for the motor home and caravan park sites that we decided to squash onto the lower beds and barely slept. My kids cried one night because they were worried about getting more bug bites.

Jucy initially were very empathetic and promised a refund for our inconvenience and I would honestly say trauma. We also incurred costs of a few hundred $$$ in creams and Dr bills. We then spent 2 full days laundering everything we owned the day before our flight, instead of enjoying our last night in Brisbane and the day we arrived home. We continued to use creams for 3 months. It was a horrible experience to ensure we rid ourselves of the bed bugs / beetles.

We then emailed Jucy over a 4 month period, as they periodically disengaged and eventually just stopped replying to our requests for updates on our complaint. Months later after countless calls and emails and promises a manager would call us, the calls never came. The last reply stated we should have reported the issues during our trip and nothing could be proven - they essentially called us liars. This is despite reporting our issues at the time and on return - over and over to customer service and them promising our issues were logged. It's been exhausting and a terrible and expensive experience that we just want to forget. Getting no compensation for a holiday ruined, bed bugs / skin irritation, medical costs and trauma on the side is a real slap in the face from Jucy. There lack of action and response and dismissal of our complaint is negligent.

I do not recommend you hire a Jucy rental if you want to have an enjoyable and trouble free (bugs free) holiday!

That is what you can expect when you are booking with Jucy. And no they won‘t give you a new car but apologise again and again. Pro Tip: Take photos documentation is key and do an chargeback with your credit card company. Thats the only language they understand. Really cruel business practises ! Shame on you Jucy !

Horrible customer experience …

Surly disinterested customer service from shuttle driver and guy at the pick up desk, woman working there dropping f bombs loudly to another staff member in front of customers, car was filthy and had a dirty food container under the passenger seat. On return same surly service from another staff member who tried to blame windscreen chip on me when it was clearly noted on my contract as being there when I picked the car up and also did not believe I had picked the car up from the Queenstown branch, said it was from Christchurch, he was a complete idiot. The full insurance that costs an additional $25 per day is clearly a rort as it states that it covers windscreen chips yet they don’t repair these. Overall a terrible experience and would never rent from this company again and will warn others to avoid.

Forced to wait in the parking lot for 9 HOURS to pick up my rental!!!

I was forced to wait to pick up my van for 9 HOURS! There were long lines at a practically unmanned counter. There were many people with later reservations that were able to pick up there rentals hours before I did, despite arriving at 9am and being one of the first people to check in. Customer service would not say how long it would take for the van to be ready, forcing me to literally wait in the parking lot and waiting room instead of at least going back in the city for the day. Due to this extremely unorganized business and absolutely terrible customer service, I lost a significant portion of an already short vacation. Companies like this are supposed to be in the tourism business. There is absolutely no excuse to not be able to deliver their service at a time when it is known tourists will rely on them the most. This business is absolutely horrible.

Really unprofessional experience :( we will not be booking again and do not recommend!
We booked our Jucy condo via a travel agency with insurance. Only to found out we had to pay a $500 NZ deposit because we did not pay for their insurance. During our trip one of The emergency lights went on, which caused a lot of trouble, we did not feel comfortable driving the vehicle. It made us feel very unease, not something you want during a trip you have been dreaming of and paid a lot of money for! The staff in Queenstown was very friendly and ended up helping us and made us feel comfortable. The condo itself was really old, price quality is not okay.

Very unprofessional staff and unhappy…

Very unprofessional staff and unhappy customer experience:
1. Staff notifying us nothing about how clean the toilet cassette should be and we were charged with a whopping $250 fine for a bit of shit stuck on the cassette lid. It was some very expensive shit. Probably pricier than gold weight wise.
2. We tried to dispute the matter but the staff at their branch were very indifferent and kicked the ball to their feedback team, which can only be approached through email. They contacted us a week later, stating that we can take the matter further to external investigation if not happy. I’m going to report to NZ commerce commission and I encourage everyone who’s not happy with them to do the same. Their bad practice needs to be exposed, and they seem to have a bad reputation for ripping off overseas tourists. The charges normally come when the tourists have left the country but we are NZers and we have the time to fight them, if any tourists got ripped off I suggest go to NZ commerce commission to file a complaint. I believe with enough complaints the company will have to pay a fine or at least offer better service for fear of consequences.
3. Overall we didn’t enjoy the camper trip much because the rental fee, plus the insurance, plus the petrol cost caused by these petrol guzzlers (yes their rentals are thirsty, like the company) and the unpredictable fine, it’s seriously worth considering getting a rental car and pay for comfortable motels. We did our maths afterwards and if you do yours you may be surprised. Plus a car is easier and safer to drive on NZ roads, we got stuck somewhere on a remote road because the van was too heavy to pull itself up a moderate slope and we had to wait for hours to get road rescue.
4. Juicy rentals was acquired by some Polar Capital after Covid so I guess their priority is to squeeze as much money as they can from tourists knowing they have close to none information on consumer rights here. If you’ve been ripped off as well, get busy with reporting their unfair trading behaviours to Consumer NZ, Commerce Commission, talking to Stuff news, calling them out on their social media, asking for help from Citizen Advice, etc. let’s not be the silent majority and let the NZ trip leave a bad taste in your mouth, because most NZers care about justice, and you need to let them know, so they can speak up for you as well.

Hope everyone enjoys NZ and get their justice

Good morning Saul,

We're sorry this was your experience and appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately, the cleaning fee for an uncleaned toilet cassette is a standard charge. We understand your frustration and value your comments.
