I have previously been on 4 trips and…

I have previously been on 4 trips and the last one in Pembrokeshire was awful to the point I haven’t been on a trip in years with them. The company changed the information as to notifying how many males and females on each trip. I was the only male in a predominantly female group, of which I have no issues, but the rest all have issues with men and came across as narcissistic and vile. To the point I had pre-paid for another trip in the Thames that I learnt most of the females were attending and I didn’t want to waste anymore of my time and didn’t turn up and took the financial loss.
I passed on this information onto the company and they just fobbed it off as data protection, which is untrue. I work for a big travel operator and this is rubbish!
It’s happened a few times as I know a few who attend these trips and feedback was the same.
You have lossed a lot of custom from regular customers who stuck by you in Covid times to rebook and rebook again but you lost the focus on customer experience. There are many other companies in this area that don’t adopt your discriminatory and poor customer service experience which is a result of bad management.
AVOID!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

We feel it is important to respond to a number of points raised here, as several are simply not accurate.

Large Outdoors has never provided or guaranteed a male/female split on trips, and we never have. We do not control who chooses to book onto our experiences, and our trips are open to all. We do not discriminate.

We also would not share information about who has booked onto a trip. That is not “fobbing someone off” — it is the correct and responsible way to protect the privacy of other customers.

It is also worth noting that this review appears to be based on a trip taken several years ago, as well as another trip that you chose not to attend. As such, it does not provide a fair or current reflection of the customer experience we offer today.

We fully appreciate that not every group dynamic will suit every individual. However, we do not accept the suggestion that Large Outdoors is discriminatory or poorly managed. We have welcomed many thousands of customers over the years and continue to focus strongly on providing inclusive, sociable and well-run experiences.

We are always happy to receive constructive feedback where it is fair, relevant and based on an actual recent experience.

Deserted Beaches to 'Enchanted' Forrests

I have been dipping in and out of Large Outdoors events over several years. I enjoy the interactions of like minded people who love the valleys, hills, woodlands and sometimes a mountain that the UK has to offer. I have taken part in weekends away and a couple of residential weeks, discovering parts of the UK without having to do too much planning.
It's just nice to get away and see wildlife and our landscapes, have a natter and a reset from the day to day. I would like people to experience what I enjoy from these trips, so I recommend having a look and seeing if there's something that appeals.

Giving Large Outdoors a big high five!

I love the concept of these trips - great choice of locations and accommodation types. I mostly do the walking ones but am tempted to try sea kayaking one day! My last weekend with Large Outdoors was a brilliant trip to Northumberland, where we walked the low tide footpath over to Holy Island (something i'd wanted to do for ages!) Everything is always well organised, there's always a lovely crowd and - most importantly for me - every trip is led by a qualified Mountain Leader.

Highly recommend

After trying several other walking groups which left me a tad disappointed. I found LO and I have enjoyed many many hikes and I have always had an amazing time. Lovely accommodation and amazing food, even providing for my food intolerances! Every walk was well organised and the guides very knowledgeable. Even dipped my toes into wild swimming .. 🤣

Amazing experience

Just back from a great trip swimming in Scotland with this company. I’ve been on a number of trips over 8 years & they never fail to live up to or exceed expectations. We swam in some incredibly beautiful places & I always felt secure in the guides knowledge and experience. He coped admirably with the range of experience & ability in the group I was encouraged to step outside my comfort zone to get the most out of the trip but never felt pushed to do something I wasn’t happy to do. The hostel accommodation was fine, always clean and for a five night trip with a guide transport, ferries accommodation & some food it was amazing value. I will be back

I have been on quite a few of Large Outdoors walking weekends and always come away on the Sunday uplifted. It's not just the walking aspect but the arriving on a Friday and being welcome and having a lovely meal cooked for you. After a long walk on the Saturday, yet again a home cooked meal is served and by then everyone is relaxed and know each other and the camaraderie is great.
Bear in mind the price is low because you share a room with others, so best to bring ear plugs if you are worried about snorers! The food is always good and plentiful and I have yet to be disappointed.

Very disappointed on this 'Guided' day…

Very disappointed on this 'Guided' day walk from Bolton Abbey to the top of Simons Seat in the Yorkshire Dales. There was no 'guiding' and no information about the history of Bolton Abbey, the river, the climate, the local farming, the birdlife, the plantlife, the valley of desolation, the mythology of Simons Seat, etc. Just a race to the top of Simons Seat and back again. Only paid £19 so not a great loss. But the fantastic opportunity to teach and inform the group of 9 was completely lost.....and no way could the day be described as 'Guided'. On reflection I could have purchased a 'Guide' book at the Village Shop for much less than £19 and joined some of the many hundreds of others slowly enjoying the walk in the countryside and learning about the area. I suppose the moral of the story is.......enjoy these walks with family and friends you know, purchase your own guide book and enjoy a peaceful enjoyable walk in the beautiful countryside.

Great Outdoors have given a reply which to be honest is meaningless. A 'Guided Walk' up and down Simons Seat is not required. Probably 300 people do the walk every day. The "well worn" path is obvious and almost the size of the M1 motorway.....impossible to get lost or lose your way. I didnt pay £19 to show me the path....I paid the £19 for the 'Guided' walk. Fully expecting the 'Guide' to give out lots of local information as above. Nobody needs a 'Guide' to show them the path. Blimey, children as young 5 or 6 were running up and down the path. Just buy a Guide book, take a gentle walk up and down, enjoy frequent stops, and have a picnic. Enjoy the day....dont race....and learn all about the location.......

Great Outdoors have responded by saying they dont understand why I would choose a 'Guided Tour' in the first place. Well Ime afraid its quite clear. If I book a Guided Tour at the Tower of London.....the Guide tells me all about the Tower of London. If I book a Guided Tour of Castle Howard......the Guide tells me all about Castle Howard. If I book a Guided Tour of York.....the Guide tells me all about York. If I book a Guided Tour of the BBC Studios in Leeds.....the Guide explains all about the BBC Studio. Clearly, I was expecting your Guide to tell me something of the area...the farming, the history, the river, the valley of desolation, the legend of Simons Seat. And all I got was follow the path and the Guide plus 8 followers raced off into the distance. I followed at leisure talking with fellow ramblers, taking in the scenery, enjoying a chat with a local farmer and met the rest of the group at the top of Simons Seat......who then immediately proceeded to race off again down to Barden Towers. The Guide explained that she tried to do the whole 10 miles up and down within 6 hours including an hour for lunch at the top and often in a lot less time than that. It was just a mad race up and down. Infact it was so ridiculous that when we reached Barden Towers I told the group to go on without me which they did at speed. And after a short rest and an icecream I joined some fellow ramblers and we strolled at a sensible pace back down the side of the river to Bolton Abbey.......and yes, I did then call at the shop by the car park and bought the 'Guide Book'.

Thanks again for your follow-up comments. It’s clear this wasn’t the right event for you, but we do need to address some of the assumptions made.

This was a 10-mile guided walk through the Yorkshire Dales – not a historical tour of Bolton Abbey or an interpretive nature talk, and it was never advertised as such. If that’s what you were expecting, we’d encourage checking the event details more closely before booking.

Our walks are led by qualified Mountain Leaders who are there to guide the group safely, manage the day, and provide a supportive and sociable environment – not to deliver a running commentary. Many of our participants join precisely because they don’t want to worry about route-finding or logistics – they want a relaxed day out in good company, knowing someone else is looking after the details.

You’ve said that nobody needs a guide for this route – and that’s entirely your choice. But in that case, it’s unclear why you chose to book a guided group walk in the first place.

Joining a Large Outdoors event is about more than just following a path – it’s about being part of a sociable group, having an experienced leader to manage the day, and enjoying the walk without having to organise it yourself.

We’re always happy to welcome new people, but it’s important to book the type of experience you’re actually looking for.

value for money

Been on two walking breaks with this company. Whilst both were with no frills hostel accommodation they were excellent value for money as other companies charge exhorbitant prices. As long as you do not mind sharing rooms and are not a fussy eater then they are fine and I would book them again.

I've done 4 Snowdon adventures with this company and I have been really impressed with every one.
Stayed in Llanberis every time and even stayed in the same single room at the top.
My feet are shot now and unable to take out these challenges and I really miss them.
I do a lot of cycling and have done for many years which my feet problem does not affect.
I just wish they did cycling weekends because I would be with them like a shot

Thanks so much for your kind words and continued support over the years. We're really pleased to hear how much you enjoyed the Snowdon adventures and completely understand how frustrating it must be not being able to take on the same challenges now. We'll take the cycling weekend idea on board – never say never!
