London Spine Unit - Back and Neck Pain Clinic Reviews 

My mother was in absolute agony for more than 3 months due to sciatica. It just came out of nowhere and took her out of action. From working full time she went straight to being bed bound and unable to carry out simplest of actions.The pain was 9/10 and she was bed bound for those three months. Multiple trips to A&E and GP and they wouldn't class it as an emergency therefore they wouldn't do anything about it other than upgrading the painkillers which did next to nothing for my mother. I couldn't bear to watch my mother sleeping on A&E bench in pain for 7 hours, just to be told by doctors that she wouldn't be kept in. I remember her joining her hands and begging the doctors to stop the pain which broke my heart. I then started doing research on google and London spine unit came up with Dr Mo AKMAL's profile and review.

First meeting with Dr AKMAL was via ZOOM as my mother was bed bound. Dr AKMAL spoke to me and my mom and told us that this is nothing to worry about and that the pain would be 100% gone.Dr AKMAL assured us to visit the hospital so he could physically inspect my mother and give us the best solution. One trip to the london spine unit and Dr AKMAL advised us that the best solution would be to carry out Minimally invasive disectomy. Dr AKMAL advised that due to my mother being bed bound for a while, steroid injection might not give the result that my mother wishes. Dr AKMAL was very confident and showed us some videos from other patients who had gone through the same ordeal. The biggest thing i noticed between before and after was the smile on the patients face. Dr AKMAL was constantly assuring my mother throughout the meeting that he would take care of her pain and gave her 100% confidence that the result would be delivered.He promised her that she would be walking pain free the same day after the operation.

Before the operation Dr GURUNG was consulted multiple times and he also was very helpful.

Right after the surgery, as Dr AKMAL promised, my mother was walking and the biggest thing was that the pain was gone. My mother had forgotten to smile for three months and there i saw her smiling again. Dr AKMAL and Dr GURUNG gave us brilliant aftercare and informed us that just give them a ring if there was any issue. Its been several weeks now and my mother is heading towards complete recovery without any issues. The pain is completely gone and anyone who is reading this going through the same horrible sciatica pain you must come and see Dr AKMAL. My 81 year old mother who has retired in Ghana was suffering from severe lower back pain so a local surgeon put her through discectomy with hardware (spine screws). The procedure was essentially botched, with one screw breaching her spinal canal resulting in extreme pain; unable to walk, pins and needles and numbness in the left leg. The hardware subsequently had become infected and loosened as a result. Her life after this surgery was the worse she has ever experienced in all her life. She had no doubt that she was eventually to die from the infection and pain. Fortunately, through diligent search, we found Mr Akmal and his team at The UK Spine Centre. She had a zoom consultation and with a ready MRI and CT scan, Mr Akmal knew exactly how to have her back to fitness and a better quality of life. She travelled to England on 26 March 2022 and had the surgery on 11 April 2022. It was a day-case. It lasted no more than 1 hour 30 minutes. She was on my feet within 2 hours pain free - still pain free 5 weeks on! To her this is simply a miracle ! She is grateful to Jehovah God for Mr Akmal and his team - thoroughly professional bunch at the top of their game. No one deserves to suffer the pain she experienced for two years. She seriously recommends Mr Akmal and his team for anything SPINE!

From the first phone call, the team at London Spine have been amazing. I had severe symptoms following an L4/L5 disc injury from playing sports and had complete foot drop. Mr Akmal and his team treated the situation incredibly sensitively, as I had risk of permanent damage. The whole process was so quick, from initial consultation to operation was about 96 hours. On the day of the operation, the nurses couldn’t have been more helpful, attentive and calming. The surgery was flawless, with absolutely zero pain from the operation following. I am now 8 weeks from a bi-lateral discectomy and dynamic stabilisation procedure and have regained full use of my leg and toes, with a complete range of motion also. Mr Akmal’s aftercare has been first class, with regular calls from his team in the 2 weeks following the surgery, to the final consultation and discharge.

I had a massive bulging disk on my back compressing my nerve for three years. It caused me excruciating pain and almost left me disabled. I was on both crutches and completely homebound due to the severity of pain and mobility limitations.

I had my lumber surgery two weeks ago and walked out of hospital within a few hours pain free on my right leg that was almost paralysing prior to surgery. The disk was shaved off releasing the nerve completely.

Two days after surgery I had excruciating pain on my head that is unexplained as I had CT scan and MRI which were all fine. Dr Akmal has suggested it could be from the anaesthetic.

I am extremely grateful to Dr Akmal and his very welcoming and cari g team. I would highly recommend his clinic as I have had excellent recovery.

After having a poor and very slow experiance in glasgow . I contacted Mr mo Amlam . Who is a true gentleman, great listener and paitent . We transfered my scans and treatments from glasgow to harley street . Mr Aklams p.a arranged a quick zoom to start our contact .I then went down for a meeting and examination and what should have been a spec scan .only to be told of a UK shortage . So 4 weeks later the scan took place in wellington hospital . Before I traveled back to glasgow. 5 days later I got a call to book me in to 19 harley street for a l3 and l4 debridement and stabilisation. The opp took place on 24th March. 2hours I was out walking 4 hours later . My pain in back groin and foot was all gone .thanks to Mr aklam . I can't thank Mr Akmal and team at the London Spine Unit enough for their help. I had a herniated disc in my back which was causing pain and restrictions. Compared to other offers of surgery (e.g. several nights in hospital), the day surgery and minimally invasive procedure were hugely appealing. I am now 3 weeks post surgery, have no pain and am recovering incredibly quickly if I compare myself to friends who have had a similar procedure. it was truly remarkable, straightforward and the team were kind, friendly and always helpful. very highly recommended!

From diagnosis to treatment and post operational care, the London Spine Unit were very courteous, caring, efficient and generally first class in all departments of their clinic.

My ailments pre operation have been successfully eradicated and I no longer suffer from back and nerve pain. I can also walk without stooping.

I would not hesitate to recommend anyone with back problems to seek their advice and treatment if required.

My interaction with Ms Rola Shamlakh was v educative. The way she explained the logic behind the basic exercises she taught me has really helped me to internalise those. Nobody I had consulted for years ( I suffer from arthritis of knees) had done like her before. She was wonderful.
Overall it was a v fruitful session. I wish I cud have more such sessions with her but had to return to my country. But hope to be back soon to consult her more…..

In early 2021 my back pain which had long troubled me became acute and it became clear that I urgently needed help .A friend whose father had been similarly afflicted recommended Mo Akmal of the London Spine unit to help me . After a 'phone consultation he immediately summoned me to London for an MRI which resulted in immediate surgery .
His very professional team which included a very able assistant , Dr. Lok , operated and in short order , having been crippled ,in great pain and almost unable to walk , I emerged from the procedure pain free . I am aware that this was a very intricate and delicate procedure which had been fully explained to me from the outset.
Full supervised recovery took place over the ensuing six months and I am now very physically active and able to take part in all the things that had been previously impossible.

Due to oesterprosis last year I ended up with 8 spinal fractures, as the NHS failed to investigate my back pain, I had no choice but to refer myself to a private consultation at the Harley St spinal Clinic. I was under Dr Mo Akmal who arranged Mris and from here he found out I had 8 fractures, he suggested a procedure called balloon kyphoplasty, this was done in October 2021.
The procedure itself went well and the care Harley st and Dr Akmals team gave me was exceptionall.
Dr Akmal is one of the best surgeon s we read his reviews on Trust pilot before we made the initial appointment, he is a very kind and caring person who is professional as well as genuinely caring about you and your health problems.
Its 3 months after my surgery and I am not taking any painkillers, I still have a little way to go as healing can take a few months but I'm hopeful my back will be back to as normal as it can be..
I am still under review under Dr Akmal so this gives me reassurance that until I'm not fully fixed he will be looking after me.

I was recommended to see Dr Mo Akmal .
After years of back issues with chiropractors, Physio’s , acupuncture snd finally tens machine.
In the last six months the pain was excruciating every night and I couldn’t walk without limping !
I was recommended spinal lumbar fusion which was arranged within 3 weeks.
Immediately after surgery I felt better , no leg pain and my posture was amazingly upright , in fact within three hours from surgery I was eating a meal with my wife in the Marlybone fish restaurant , although I don’t recommend this !
On day one I went out for a mile walk with the dogs , by day 4 I’d walked 3 miles and on day 7 I was able to walk 8 miles , amazing .
I’m a keen cyclist and really wanted to get back to training , as of today 15 days after surgery I was able to train on Zwift ( a cycling ) without any adverse pain .

It took a lot for me to go ahead with the lumbar fusion but I can highly recommend Dr Mo , you can fully trust him and he’s got so much time to explain everything to you .

He’s the best spine surgeon you’ll get , don’t bother looking any further .

After suffering with back pain for most of my 20s, I am so happy I found Mr Mo Akmal. I had many years of misdiagnosis and never really felt my condition was understood. After my first consultation with Mr Akmal I felt like he understood me and I knew I was in safe hands. We went through all of my options and after a year of treatment, decided it was time for a L5/S1 Primary Posterior Lumbar Fusion with Instrumentation. The whole process was really easy and straightforward and I was able to leave the hospital the same day. The recovery period was tough at times, but I can honestly say so worth it. The difference it has made to my life is amazing. I am now 4 months post-op, I feel incredible and am back to normal daily life without back pain. After suffering for so long, I feel like a huge wait has been lifted and that is all thanks to Mr Akmal and his team. All of whom were incredibly professional and kind. Having suffered moderate back pain for almost 2 years and severe pain for 3 months with many visits to chiropractors i discovered the London Spine Unit. At the consultation with Mr Akmal, he explained my mri scan, what was wrong with my back and what operation could be done. All as a day patient!!! On the day of my operation I struggled to walk from the nearby car park and yet just 7 hours later after a L4/L5 decompression/discectomy and dynamic stabilisation i walked out the door pain free. Quite amazing. That was 6 weeks ago and have been back at work for 3 weeks. I can not thank Mr Akmal and his team enough for giving me my life back. I have been a patient of Mr Akmal's at the London Spine Unit for four years now due to deterioration of disc and facet joints caused by congenital fusion of one side of L5/S1. The team have always given exemplary care and advice whilst we stepped through the conservative options (steroid injections, nerve radio frequency ablation). Due to further deterioration a Coflex device was fitted two months ago. I walked out of the day surgery and I am delighted with the results. The pain and stiffness has resolved. Dr Akhmal is by far the finest Dr i have ever met. I have suffered a horrific cervical spine injury due to a violent osteopathic correction that left me with
life changing neurological symptoms. Dr akhmal not only listened to my issues with great humility but also listened to my extensive research into the cause and correction of the injury. Dr Akhmal performed exacting prolotherapy treatments on me using dextrose and prp and my issues have drastically reduced allowing me to function again.I will be having more prolotherapy under
Dr akhmal to complete my return to full health.

I am thrilled with my L5/S1 discectomy operation that was performed by Mo Akmal and his team. Immediately after the operation I felt like a different person, no pain whatsoever on my back or right leg as if a mountain was shifted over from my back. To go home the same day and be able to sleep all night on my back without pain was almost a miracle to me after enduring more than two months of continues pain. I am writing this review 3 weeks after my operation and I feel great and I am actually going back to work next week.
I am very grateful to Dr Mo Akmal and his team. I absolutely recommend him to anyone with back problem. He preformed my surgery with just 1.5cm cut and he managed it without cutting any piece of bone on my back which means my bone structure stayed intact.
He also explained the surgery before the operation in a very clear and friendly way which helped me to understand it well and erased all my fears and concerns about deciding whether to do an operation or not.

I was really please with the Mr Akmal and his team. They fully explained to me all of my possible options regarding my persistant disc pertrusion (18 months). I opted for a discectomy, which was successful and am currently pain free. On the day of my operation the whole team had an excellent bedside manner and I was made to feel very comfortable in the hospital.
