I have been teaching Organic Chemistry at the university level for years. I can honestly say that having this resource available to my students--and especially the Practice Organic Mechanisms workbook--has been a huge help for my students.

When I ask them at the end of the year which things were most helpful for learning Organic Chemistry, MOC and the POM books are unanimously mentioned. In fact, their only suggestion is that I should assign more of the book!

If you are struggling with organic chemistry, you need this resource. I used it throughout both Orgo 1 and Orgo 2, and it completely changed my grades. The explanations actually make sense compared to dense textbooks. It breaks down complex reaction mechanisms into steps that are easy to follow. The summary sheets and cheat sheets are worth every penny for exam prep. Highly recommend to anyone trying to survive organic chemistry!

I have used Master Organic Chemistry (MOC) since 2021, starting as an undergraduate and continuing into grad school, and it has consistently been one of the most useful resources for understanding and practicing organic chemistry. The explanations are clear, well organized and focused on helping students understand the reasoning behind reactions rather than simply memorizing them.

Furthermore, James is an excellent educator who has a talent for making difficult organic chemistry concepts feel manageable. Additionally, the website is very user-friendly and organized in a way that makes it simple to find a specific reaction, reagent, mechanism, or concept without wasting time.

James also does an excellent job of including references and connecting his explanations to literature. Now, as a graduate student, I use it for quick reviews, checking reaction logic and revisiting concepts before going into more advanced literature.

Overall, James has created a trustworthy, user-friendly resource that has grown with me from undergraduate organic chemistry into graduate level work. MOC remains one of the first places I turn for clear explanations, practical guidance and reliable references.

I love the notes! I am taking Organic Chem over the summer at Northwestern University, and it is a pretty fast-paced course so I don't really have time to make my own noted. This site has been a great help and I wish I knew it before I started taking the course. As an international student on full financial aid at Northwestern, this might be the first time I spent some money on educational material because I really think it is worth it!

Organic Chemistry, Humanized

James has taken an extraordinarily complex subject and made it understandable, approachable, and genuinely human. He responds to criticism, of which there is very little, as a colleague rather than becoming defensive or combative. When an error is identified, and these are rare and generally related to web issues, he corrects it immediately and even follows up with a personal thank-you email.

My students absolutely love this site. From the reaction maps to the practice problems, every resource is thoughtfully designed. The problem explanations do not simply provide the correct answer; they clearly and cleanly explain the reasoning behind it. Combined with James’s engaging, human approach to organic chemistry, this makes Master Organic Chemistry one of the finest educational resources available.

I absolutely LOVED MOC and organic chemistry, probably my favorite class of all time, thanks to this site. I took it last year and got a B in Organic I and an A in organic II! I kept my membership because I gave free tutoring to students at my uni, and needed to keep up with all my organic knowledge. I won’t have time this year to tutor because I’m in my senior year, applying to med school and taking some intense physics classes for my minor, so I thought it best to cancel my membership.

I loved MOC, and I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me!
