Master Supply Co. Restores One’s Faith in Craft—and in Customer Service

It is a strange and edifying thing to find oneself seduced by cowhide. Not in the usual fetishistic sense common to certain corners of menswear discourse, but in the quiet astonishment of encountering a product that is—however improbable this may sound—actually as good as it claims to be. I speak here of Master Supply Co.’s two vegetable-tanned leather jackets: the Field Jacket and the Switchback. I intended to buy one. I now own both. Whether that signals a breakdown in will or a breakthrough in aesthetic clarity is, as always, a question of interpretive framing.

Let us begin with the material. This is natural veg-tan leather, uncorrected, unfinished, and unapologetically pale—the kind of ghostly cream that recalls antique parchment or the inner skin of a fig. It arrives stiff as an undergraduate’s prose but softens, darkens, and acquires character at a rate that borders on narrative. You don’t so much wear these jackets as enter into a slow epistemic contract with them. They mark you as much as you mark them. The Field Jacket, with its oversized patch pockets and utilitarian stoicism, feels like something Hemingway might have worn had he been less interested in lions and more in leathercraft. The Switchback is more structured, more symmetrical—like a trucker jacket that read a book once and now insists on calling itself a “topology.”

Both pieces are cut with uncommon precision, neither fashionably short nor preposterously long, and the hardware feels considered rather than performative. No zippers that clang like wind chimes, no gratuitous rivets, no faux-aged brass designed to signal “authenticity” to the algorithmically suggestible. Just solid buttons, thick seams, and the sort of tactile satisfaction one associates more often with rare books or aged oak than with mass-produced outerwear.

To be clear: these jackets are not cheap. But they are also far from the overpriced cosplay garments that dominate the upper echelons of heritage menswear. In fact, for full-grain, natural vegetable-tanned leather, hand-assembled with care, they are—if one dares say it aloud—a remarkably good deal. One pays not for hype, but for hide.

And then there is the human side of the enterprise, which deserves more than a footnote. The people at Master Supply Co.—and in particular, Josh—demonstrate an almost disarming level of care. Not the scripted cheerfulness of brand reps trained to funnel you into return cycles and Net Promoter Scores, but actual attention, borne of craft and curiosity. They want the leather to live well, and they want you to be glad you wear it. One suspects they’d keep making jackets even if no one bought them, which is, paradoxically, the sort of operation one most wants to support. There are brands that try to impress you. Master Supply Co., by contrast, seems content to let the leather do the talking.

Working withnMaster Supply …

Working with Master Supply has been a great experience. I currently own 3 leather jackets all them thus far are worth every penny and then much more. Truly more value than what I paid. Jackets are very warm for my climate ( Southeast Texas, USA) and they look BAD ASS. I LOVE all three of them and I plan on purchasing at least one more but of course MS will drop a jacket that will be a must have for me and that plan goes out of the window.
Thank you Gentlemen keep up the Great Work.

Pakistan product.

Great customer service!! Shipping from Pakistan got hung up for a few days. Couple the order fulfillment time and shipping time, plan on 2-3 weeks. Once I received the jacket I immediately sent the jacket back. Not for any defects but it was too small. Return time was 2 weeks. I liked the jacket but I question the true reason(s) why a Canadian company can’t use Canadians to make their product.

Great Products, Even Better Customer Service

Master Supply Co. knocked it out of the park with the Convoy 224 jacket. The leather quality is phenomenal—thick, rich, and clearly built to outlast just about anything I throw at it. It’s one of those jackets that feels like it’ll only get better with age, and honestly, I can see it lasting a lifetime.

But what truly sets Master Supply Co. apart is their customer service. Lane was incredible—super responsive on Instagram and genuinely invested in helping me find the perfect fit. He walked me through every step and made the whole process feel personal, not transactional.

I know some people gripe about the jackets being made in Pakistan, but let me be clear: the craftsmanship is top-tier. The stitching, hardware, and construction are as good (if not better) than many jackets made in the U.S. or Europe. Plus, the shipping and return process was smooth—I ordered two sizes to find the right fit and had zero issues sending one back.

If you’re on the fence, don’t be. These jackets are the real deal, and the people behind the brand care deeply about what they’re putting out into the world.

Review of the Vanguard

Ok got my vanguard. At first it was snug; too snug and I considered returning it. But the leather is stiff, almost like my old buffalo hide jacket. Suspecting it needed to be worked in, I hung in there. Three days after wearing its starting to break in, loosening up, conforming. Very happy. If you plan on making this a winter jacket under which you will wear a bulky layer most of the time, then I’d size up. But if you plan to use it as three season jacket follow Master Supply’s guidelines.

The color begins as an espresso (credit my wife for that) which allows this jacket to be worn with either black or brown shoes or boots. It catches the hues equally well and doesn’t contrast starkly the way a black jacket clashes with brown shoes. Can’t wait for the Accelerust patination to commence!

The back venting is key; absolutely key. As a snug, form-fitting jacket you need them to allow free movement. I find they are just enough for me (5’10” 162lbs but with broad shoulders). The collar has lovely accent stitching and the subtle red thread bisecting the back is subtle yet eye-catching. Laid flat or turned up against the cold the collar is thick and robust and doesn’t flop around asymmetrically. Nothing worse than being cold and damp, turning your collar up for warmth and having one side sat over like a basset hound’s ear. Softer leathers like lambskin can do that. Not this one.

The sleeves are narrow with a flare at the end and two snaps on each sleeve. I won’t be using them becuase I like how they look unsnapped. The cut makes the cuffs stiff and not floppy, requiring closure. You know how some jacket cuffs are too loose and soft and they flap around tapping constantly on car doors and occasionally knocking over wine glasses? These are more restrained and under control. Also the slit opening allows them to be rolled up, which is a feature I like.

The jacket offers both snaps and a zipper. I exclusively use snaps. Each one works perfectly. This doesn’t always happen. Sometimes you get snaps that come undone easily or worse, are misaligned and require so much pressure and manipulation to snap shut that your thumbs turn red! Not here. All good from the get go.

Lining is lovely and soft with two internal pockets and one security pocket. They are both deep.

Weather-wise, this jacket works with a flannel shirt and scarf in temps at freezing. As the temp drops you’ll need another option.

On the flip side, it’s a shortish garment so the pockets ride a bit high, suiting them better for storage than hand warming. Yet, even Fonzie couldn’t stick his hands all the way into his jacket pockets, so that’s ok. I plan to deliberately jam my fists into them whenever I can to open them. My guess is they will break in and gape a bit, easing access but potentially sacrificing security. Most waist length leathers off limited hand warming capabilities unless the pockets are stitched lower on the body and have adequate angle to access.

However, a superior feature about the patch pocket is that it’s more robust than the pockets in every other jacket I’ve had. Those are internal and the interior fabric eventually tears, always, creating a new “pocket” that accesses the entire interior jacket lining (smh). I’ve lost a few items by accidentally sliding them into torn hand warmers only to have them go into the abyss of the interior lining so this won’t be an issue here.

On the other hand, the chore coat style left breast pocket is great for needed items like sun glasses, wallets, tickets, whatever.

Received a Christmas gift of a Horse…

Received a Christmas gift of a Horse shoe buckle type belt (belt: tan and rustic buckle) by Master Supply Co. Can only imagine my wife paid a fortune as there would be extra shipping/import fees. To keep it brief, the belt buckle is very badly thought out that the leather doesn’t run through the loop side of the buckle easily. Also, the tongue far from sits in the grove. That said, after a while the buckle shreds and distorts the leather belt. It’s sad as it could have been a really good product if someone tested it before marketing. Fortunately I’ve had the mini Dremel on it and now it works better. I wouldn’t buy anything from them in future because of this lack of detail. It’s really put me off the whole brand.
